hell yes! now THATS a bond movie! its going to be so hard to watch some of the older ones now this one makes them look ridiculous,craig was great,ive always been on his side for the role,all his haters owe hm a HUGE slice of humble pie.
great opening
great theme song
amazing parkour chase sequence
eva green
THAT aston martin (the new one,if i ever win the lotto,oh yes it will be mine)
finally a decent villain,no maniacal aspirations of world domination,just money,and he cries blood!
brutal violence,amazed it got away with a 12 ratingt
the card game was cool
slowed down a bit after the game (is it my imagination or is the italian villa on the lake the same place where anakin and padme got married in attack of the clones?)
great ending action sequence,bond get his revenge,cue THE line and THAT music
class all the way through,roll on the next one

For only the second time in 21 outings, a Bond film that's primarily about James Bond. What a refreshing change after the ludicrous silliness that was Die Another Day.
Exciting, romantic, tense.
Full of characters, with interesting dialogue, not just the usual exposition and quips. The occasional lighter moment, to relieve the tension, is character driven. Many people seem to complain about the title theme, but I liked it, the central motif seeming to be (well, to my ears) a riff on the Bond themes that David Arnold plays with in his 4 scores so far. A titles sequence that I imagine would be what Saul Bass would have come up with in the 60s, had he had the technology at his disposal.

I'll be seeing this again, especially after an ending that brought some cheers and applause as a character arc was completed.

Excellent stuff. Daniel Craig, you ARE Ian Fleming's James Bond. Now, if only the producers would learn from this that the source material is what they should be basing their films on ...

I have to give this five as I am so excited that they were brave enough to push the boundaries with this film that bit further. The film almost mocks the earlier films that were chock full of comedy and cliches. This film has action that feels "real" and a nice gritty feel. I was very pleased when Craig got this role as I thought he was perfect for it and Im glad that its worked out even better than I dreamed.

And there's no way that there is any set piece in Casino Royale that betters the competition (the Bourne Supremacy was suspenseful from beginning to end and far smarter to boot). Campbell should've made the whole film in the same tone to the opening if he wanted it to stand out (at least cut out the information by mobile phone to set up yet another chase fallback ). Undoubtedly Craig has presence and makes a decent Bond (don't think he can be judged fully after one film), but I really don't see where he can take this.

You what? That whole free running sequence was amazing, totally blew me away.

The action sequences were second to none. Yeah, the bridge scene in MI3 was good, but relied far too much on special FX and CGI... something Bond has been previously criticised for!

That Aston crash set a world record for the number of times for turning a car over.

The collapsing house could sink 20ft on a hydrolic gimble and twist in any direction.

Casino Royale just raised the bar.

An excellent film. A very good performance from Craig as Bond as well. So many positives which far outweigh the negatives. And those naysayers should bury their faces in a big plate of humble pie.

The real proof that the franchise still has legs might be in the next film, it won't have the benefit of being based on a Flemming novel and it'll have the task of topping Casino Royale for character development and plot momentum.

It would have been good if they had worked out a way to keep Roger Michell on as director for Bond 22. He's worked very well with Daniel Craig in the past. Maybe they should even consider asking Martin Campbell back?

and following those comments, this:

This seems clear enough to me.

Whilst the BBFC didn't cut the film, they advised the filmmakers what cuts they themselves would have to make in order to get a 12A certificate.
The film in cinemas is not the early cut shown to the BBFC.
This then can be taken two ways: 1) The version we see isn't how the film makers originally intended or 2) They purposefully included alternative and longer shots during the torture sequence to draw attention away from the other scenes that may have proved problematic for a 12A rating? As it stands it's a pretty strong 12A.
Either way though the movie rocked and you couldn't help but leave with a smile on your face at the movies last line.

i have been telling people for months about how Daniel Craig and the movie in general will most certainly not dissapoint! and i was right! daniel craig IS james bond, this role was meant to belong to him. the action scenes were spectacular to say the least. every single moment of the movie was packed full of adrenalin. this is the film of the year and all i can say is bring on the next bond movie!

Went to see CR last night with a few mates and we all agreed this was by far the best bond by a mile. To all the people who doubted daniel craig as a believable bond, i believe a big slice of humble pie is in order. He was BRILLIANT. gritty, vicious and extremely entertaining. The opening theme tune rocked (as i knew it would given the right context). The only problem i have with the entire film and this is a minor thing is that the aston got killed. but thats neither here nor there. i just love that car. Bottom line is The film was Ace, Craig is brilliant and Bond is back. nuff said

Both myself and my wife saw Casino Royale last night and we must say WOW! Daniel Craig has been vindicated after all the bad press he received. I think he's up there with Sean Connery as one of the best (and most book-authentic) Bonds ever. Well done to everyone involved. This will be a BIG hit!

I have to say that after seeing this movie, I was completely bowled over both by Craig and the movie in general. I doubt all this craig-bashing will continue for much longer. I was slightly skeptical about him up till recently but I reserved my judgement and he was everything I could have hoped and much more. You won't care that he's blonde. The thing I was worried about, however, was that it wouldn't have the feeling of a Bond movie, BUT BOY, WAS I WRONG! as he starts out a bit of a rookie, but you see so much develop over the picture, his relationship with M, his love for the vodka martini, the reason why he never stays with any women, all these points re covered and Craig plays is with such skill that it's a pleasure to watch. He becomes more 'Bond' as the film progresses.

The only slight problem I found with the film was the pacing towards the end, but that's only a SLIGHT issue. There was never a boring moment.

..enjoyed it even more 2nd time around and Daniel Craig...my word what an actor. The torture sequenece is one of the greatest Bond moments of all time and Craig is mesmerising. If Mr Depp was worthy of an Oscar nomination for POTC then surely Craig deserves a nod at next year's academy awards? He's easily the best Bond since Connery and i wouldn't be at all surprised if he surpasses the Scott given a couple more outings as Bond.

It was brilliant, totally different to the earlier fiilms, now I loved goldeneye but you cant compare Mr Brosnans wistfuly staring out to sea with Craigs emotional performance. This was a "proper" film with a wrapper of bond around it.

going into spoiler mode for those who haven't seen it but I especially loved

Bond winning his classic aston
The fact he will always drink his vodka martini to remember vesper
The subtle introduction of felix from the CIA
The building of an affectionate, respecting relatioship beteen M and bond, but you still dont doubt that she would have no compunction in sending him to his death (to quote the other M in goldeneye)
Bonds explanation why he always uses his "real" name when encountering the bad guys, "they should know who I am, why pretend"

didnt see a universal (?) exports refernce though, maybe that is to come

Saw this yesterday so here's my brief two pence.

What a blinder! Great action, driection, script, story, tragic love story, the job lot! Oh and Craig makes Brosnan look like a pansy.

It's a little overlong and you cant really agrue if some other Bond fan says "Where's my silly villains and gadgets etc" because they have a point ( it really depends on what type of Bond film they like). But other than that its done what Batman Begins did last year and given a franchise a kick in the right direction that is exciting and one of the best in the series, and also contender for best of the year.

Oh and Craig is a bad arse mofo.

Wow Mr Silas, thats low even for you. I take it that everyone here giving it a good review is infact Daniel Craig in disguise. I take it also that he has infiltrated all the major newspapers and film magazines in the world and given Casino Royale a good review in thosetoo? Have you even seen the film, or are you going to continue making snide comments?

Getting back on topic, I seen it last night and was not dissapointed. It did drag a bit towards the end, and 20 minutes or so could have been shaved off, but the rest of the film made up for it. Great plot, unbelievable action, and a truely excellent performance by Craig who is now my second favourite Bond to date (of course Connery is first). Refreshing to see a great Bond girl and a human villain for once, instead of the ridiculous self parodies of recent times. Its probably not as good as most of the early films, but its certainly better than anything Brosnan and Dalton have ever done for James Bond.
And the Bourne Series is overrated, forgetable pap anyway

I cannot fathom the amount of praise heaped upon this third rate film. We seem to have been blinded by the pompous, self-satisfied, smugness of the James Bond franchise. This film was a disjointed mess; the script was unintentionally hilarious (the little finger speech brought the house down), the action was sub-Octopussy, the ending managed to blunt any edginess the film had accidently stumbled across during the preceeding (what felt like) 4 hours, the rampant product placement was shameful, the acting was wooden, the racial sterotypes belonged to films like the War Geese, and the plot made little sense. It takes a lot for a terrorist financier to gain sympathy but this film somehow managed it. It was like watching your Grandad wearing trainers or Richard Madeley doing his Ali-G impression. It was like watching special effects in Eastenders. America does this sort of thing ten times better, with more flair and purpose - they make trash action films that you enjoy despite their plot shortcomings. Casino Royale wanted to be arty and exciting at the same time and produced neither. Without the sentimentality of the James Bond theme it would have got reviewed as a moderately bad espionage thriller. I haven't even mentioned the sado-masochistic homo-erotic sub-text yet...

Just what we've all been waiting for.

The Brosnan years brought the franchise back to life and gave purest Bond film fans just what they wanted. Casino Royale has come at the perfect time for the franchise and fans.

Craig is perfect as the MI6 agent as his style is not too disimilar to Brosnan. (Dalton never really worked out as he was such a contrast to Moore). It is the film rather than the actor which is the real winner though.

The film would not work without the 20 films previous and fits very nicely into the collection as a flashback episode. The modernisation does not matter, its the legacy and the idea we buy into. I like to think Bond is timeless.

Casino Royale covers the theme of Fleming's novel very well but never reduces Bond to the aloof, cumbersome fool that is described. The film has added plenty of action sequences, a touch of arrogance and just the right amount of nochanlant quips to tell a surprisingly simple story of our hero's first double0 mission (compared to saving the world in previous outings). Classic Bond retorts come in 'That last hand nearly killed me' and 'Are you ok?' when Vesper revives him.

The final shot of the film is superb. Never before since Connery first uttered the words has the famous introduction been so brilliantly executed.

They took a big risk with this film but the producers must have been smiling all the way through. Four more like this and Craig will be the best Bond.

I cant wait for James Bond to Return

Not much point in gushing about all the things I loved. Quite simply one of the finest pieces of action cinema ever made. Period. Action? Perfect. Acting? Perfect. Script? Perfect. Going to see it again this weekend. Been a while since a film has made me do that. It was the spiritual successor to OHMSS, but with a Bond you could believe in. Even the production design and visceral fights were similar. This was the film that The World Is Not Enough started out at before Denise Richards mucked it up.

Outstanding.

So are you still planning on seeing it then?

For me it couldn't have been better. Well, the titles were a shocker and the last act was a little anti-climactic but only in comparison to its own high standards from the beginning. Otherwise, it was quality all the way (oh, and Craig runs like a girl, but apart from that...). I thought it was really well directed, which I didn't expect. Campbell has frenzy and clarity in his action scenes which should please the moaning contingent who can't grasp Jason Bourne's shakycam dust-ups. The set pieces are groundbreaking which helps when they seemingly gape out of a plot that doesn't warrant them. But I soon found even these mammoth assaults to be smoothily contextualised into the plot in a rather tasteful (there, I said it, tasteful) manner.

Speaking of plots, Le Chiffre's stock gamble of terrorist money, influenced by terrorist attacks has all the genius hands-off urbanity of Goldfinger's masterplan. Nice.

The script is excellent, finally Paul Haggis has attributed himself to something that I didn't want to smack him for. Its his psychiatry that augments all the relationships in a film that should be defined as character-driven, first and foremost.

Wow! That is one bloody good film! Fantastic film! But as a Bond film? It makes all the previous Bond films look either dated or comedic. Roll on Bond 22. I cant wait till the next one!!! God bless ya Danny Craig. Martin Campbell. Eva (steamin) Green.

As for that "elvis_rocks" guy. What the fuck was he watchin? Couldnt have been the same film as everyone else. Also, if someone hates the Bond films so much, why the bollocks pay 6 quid or whatever to do just that? Barmy.

Daniel Craig is the finest Bond since Connery, and Casino Royale a triumphant return to form for the worlds longest running franchise. Best bond film since goldeneye. Craig was Bond mixed with Bourne and a sprinkling of Jack Bauer. Eva Green had something about her and sizzled (glad Angelina Jolie turned it down as it would of been a bit stupid). My only gripe was that after being too long it then ended to quick. i was expect another 10mins of it at the end

So Last night/this morning at 00:07 (now thats witty..) the wait was finally over for the new James Bond film, and the introduction of Daniel Craig as 007. The pre-titles sequence is fair enough, this whole 'Bond Begins' theme has clearly been kept to. The gunbarrel shot looked a bit rubbish if you ask me - but i did quite enjoy the titles, with the card graphics and things.

It is however the Bond Begins aspect that is the best, and worst things about the film. Daniel Craig is a new kind of James Bond, clumsy, cocksure, human. And his Bond is a relief after the smugness of the Pierce Brosnan years. I had just about accepted that perhaps this was a good idea, and then Judi Dench turns up. Now there is nothing wrong with Dench's performance at all - but her throwaway comments about missing the cold war and september the 11th are deeply irritating. It throws up every continuity issue with the rest of the series. It would be fine if they were rebooting the series, but they clearly aren't or they wouldn't have Dench there, and besides you know that the next film will take place after Die Another Day chronologically.

Still when we are away from that the film is really, really exellent. The freerunning scene was as cool as hell, and although the airport set piece didn't grip me as much, it was a decent enough action part. The film however is better in the slow bits, The poker game is exciting, with all the little surprises in between, and there is geniune tension as to which way everything is going to go. Even if you have read the novel - which this is an admirable adaptation of, you still wonder if they are going to change it ever so slightly.

The cast all excel as their respective charachters. LeChiffre is menacing and interesting, Craig very much makes you feel he is the new 007, and Vesper is the best Bond girl in ages.

Overall it's a very very good film. I did have minor quibbles with it - but Craig is very good as Bond. Ironically the Craig naysers have completely missed the point - Daniel Craig isn't the tradional James Bond, he's James Bond when he's just got his 00 liscence to kill, and that is far more interesting.
