A true spectacle it is to see a video game being turned into a shit scary horror that will make you jump out of your seat. At last we witness a decent movie from a video game. Better than garbage like Doom, or Lara Croft!!!!!!!!!!

Why is there a link to a review which does not exist???
I thought I heard the critics screening was cancelled.....I guess sony must think they have a real stinker on their hands.

I think we should all get a grip frankly, it looks great from the trailer, don't expect to get a film that's going to change your whole world and it'll be fine.

Can't believe the reaction across the net from just this one event, yeah it MUST be shit because they cancelled a screening! it MUST be surely, or it could just be cancelled because of reasons out of Sonys control....

Got my tickets for tonight.  Will post my thoughts when I get back.

Actually it's kinda nice going into it not knowing much about the movie.  I've seen the trailer, and that's all.  I'm pretty much unspoiled (haven't even played the game, although my copy of SH1 just arrived from ebay and I'm buying the SH2, 3 and 4 compilation this weekend - yeah it's gonna be a marathon fright-fest for me the next couple of weeks).

Has anyone actually seen this movie yet???  I'm seriously tempted to part with some hard earned (well, kinda) cash this w/e to catch this one.  Haven't seen the trailer, haven't played the games, but loved Brotherhood of the Wolf & the premise sounds as if it at least has potential!

If it wasn't for all the previous disappointments with game movies I'd already have bought my ticket, but having found myself bored senseless with the likes of Doom & Resident Evil I'm erring on the side of caution.  Someone please tell me I can have hope again!!!

Seen it last night (I am a projectionist). Starts off boring, is reasonably creepy when they first arrive in Silent Hill, right up until things start to be explained, when it all starts to lose its bite. The dialogue is as wooden as you'd expect from film based on a computer game, and it is all a bit ... meh. Not badly made, certainly nothing like the dreadful computer game adaptations we usually see, but just not that scary or interesting. At the end of the day, CGI just isn't scary. Can anyone explain the deal with the giant triangle helmet btw?

The trailer looked entertaining enough. I didn't think it looked world beating but it should be a decent viewing experience. Oh yeah and Feel free to hang draw and quarter me by the light of a hand held battery torch but I quite enjoyed Doom

Being a projectionist can you fairly judge a film in that situation? you aren't in the actual theater so i dunno you aren't getting the full experience.

silent Hill must be a fans film then, Pyramid Head is a demon and the pyramid on his head is there to look wierd, that is all.

The problem I've had with the critics response to the video gaming audiance is that we're laballed under the "gun tooting dead head" catagory who are pleased by big tits, guns and explosions with as little story as possible. Though it has come to my attention that the biggest critics of Video Game movies thus far are the Gamers themselves which renders most critics opinions as narrowminded and opionated when regarding the VG crowd.

Here's a choice quote from the Times online review:

quote:

Screenwriter Roger Avary (Pulp Fiction) and director Christophe Gans would have it that their adaptation of dark video game Silent Hill is a meditation on dreams, reality, faith and motherhood.

But gamers don't dwell on that stuff - they just want to see things die.

ARGH!

Yes, because I didn't watch it from my little window! That would be silly.  I sat in the screen whilst my colleague was doing a print check. We have to watch all films once in the screen before they are released to make sure they are of acceptable quality.

ARGH!

Although the more general point made that "the computer game format is singularly unsatisfying when transposed to a film narrative " is pretty accurate.

It takes ages for a videogame adaption to come along that's any good. But... Let me say firstly that I think that anyone who has played the game(s) will be at least satisfied with the results. However they say that familiarity breeds contempt and I have to admit that some of the shocks of the film were, lamentably, lost as I knew what was coming next. There is enough new stuff however to keep the viewer entertained, especially with Gans direction and Avery's script has all the twists and turns one would expect from one of the games stories.
Performances are also good, bar Sean Bean's odd accent, and the characters all hold a degree of interest for the viewer which allows you to care for the heroines. And this is the final comment I would make without giving anything away. Originally I heard that the script had no male lead roles and they do seem mainly redundant in the film. If these scenes were edited out, or this part of the story had been told in another way, as it often is in the games (and the climax of the film), then I feel the film would have been a bit shorter. This would have also done it credit.

What exactly IS the computer game format though?  When it's a game like Doom, where there is no discernable plot and the game is completely action-orientated, of course it will not work as a movie.  But there are many examples of video games which feature more believable plots and interesting characters than most films.  In fact, video games are by far the most creative medium at the moment, in terms of both art and storytelling.

You have a good point though.  I think the game-to-movie fad will soon fade away as video games move further into the mainstream and are adopted by the public as an acceptable and intelligent form of entertainment (at least, as intelligent as watching a film or reading a book).  When this happens, few people will care about the-film-of-the-game, in the same way as most serious gamers generally don't really care for the-game-of-the-film today.

What I mean is that the basic element of video games is the interactivity, this makes them enjoyable. The player is actively involved in a way that cannot be replicated in movies.
Here's what I said in the other thread -

The main problem with this, as with most of the new wave of video game movies, is that the original games are very derivative of specific films; Tomb Raider & Indiana Jones, Resident Evil & Romero movies. So that what makes them unique, the interactive experience a game brings, is totally impossible to translate to the big screen so you're left with a very unoriginal film.

Here is Roger Eberts review, with a couple of minor spoilers

That is one of the most condescending statements I have ever heard from a critic.

The reviewer has probably no idea of what Silent Hill actually is in the first place, otherwise he/she wouldn't have come out with such a rediculous statement. I am sick of the gamer stereotype, people have no idea. I'm sure the main audience for Silent Hill is shite horror fans, so I hope they will be disappointed.

Have just read Moriarty's review of Silent Hill on Ain't It Cool News, have to admit this kinda gives me hope that this might be (dare I say it) the best (agreed, where's the competition!) game movie so far!

I saw it today and loved it, very good effects all the way though and some quality gore.

SPOILERS

The skin removal by Mr pyramid was amazing and the final vengeance was very well done. Only the open ending let it down, oh and the reveal in the flashback needed to be a bit shorter.

END SPOILERS

But overall it was a very good horror movie, very freaky with some unnerving movements.

4/5

Very good but no The Hills Have Eyes

So, from the reviews I've read so far, Silent Hill is pretty much yet another dud as far as video game adaptations are concerned. Certainly better than Resident Evil and the likes, good sets, monsters and atmosphere, but also over-long, stupid dialogue, incomprehensable plot and not really scary.
