Lawrence Kasdan's debut as director, Body Heat, is one of those rare animals in Hollywood-an "erotic thriller" that actually is erotic. Kasdan sucks us in from the get-go, introducing us to dopey lawyer Ned Racine(William Hurt), an ambulance-chaser seemingly happy with his vacuous existence dallying with local bimbos, and defending obvious, but petty crooks with his more intelligent fellow lawyer and pal Peter(Ted Danson), and the more restained Oscar(J.A. Preston). On a steamy evening, he meets Maddie, played with vampy perfection by Kathleen Turner, the wife of a prominent businesssman (Richard Crenna), and before you can say "Double Indemnity", they're having a torrid affair, and talking about murdering her spouse. Ned enlists the help of convicted arsonist Teddy(an excellent Mickey Rourke), for advice on bomb-making. I won't spoil the rest of the plot, but this isn't a film concerned with happy endings, and it almost gets by on the torrid atmosphere set up by Kasdan from the start. Rich in characterisation, some deliciously ribald dialogue(Ned: Hey, lady-wanna f**k?), and a sumptuous score from John Barry make this a tempting and seductive tale, indeed. Perfect 80's Film Noir...
