And I'm considering giving this another go as really couldn't get into it when first published...

Just finished the 'Sisters brothers' by Patrick DeWitt ( no relation to Booker)

9/10 as nothing is perfect bar Allah.

Set ago against the backdrop of the gold-rush, it's follows to hitmen on their odyssey of another job and involves metaphors and similes and existential pondering through the medium of horses. Beats all that swords and dragon shit some of you are reading in your parents spare room. That is all.

Recently finished....

Both of which I found to be enjoyable thrillers - bought cheaply for the Kindle.

Also recently read....

Utterly harrowing and genuinely upsetting tale of a young Russian girl and her fight for survival during the Second World War.

Now I have just started some more of that swords and dragon shit......

Rather rousing boys own style action steampunk style with intelligent steam powered robots, airship battles and other such fun.

I only realised a few months ago I have met Bill Bryson quite a few times as he lives quite near where I live and I just thought he was just a beardy bloke with a weird midatlantic accent . It was quite a surprise. He is a very accessible writer in terms of his writing style and following A Brief Nearly Everything I seem to find my Kindle is now rather full of his books.

Currently half way through World War Z by Max Brooks. Can't help feeling I'm not enjoying as much as I feel I ought to, but it's quite good.

It's possible though that my slow progress is responsible for my feeling of low enjoyment somehow - new baby in the house has left me with a bit less time for reading, and I've fallen into a bad habit of filling too much of what "me" time I have playing shit iPhone games!

Easily the best book in the series so far. Simply stunning plot twists, amazing set-pieces and devastating death scenes.

However, before I read the final three books (so far) in the series, I wish to take a self enforced break from A Song Of Ice And Fire.

Therefore....

So far so good about a third way in. Is the film rubbish becaue the book is good fun?

Can't remember which forumite recommended this to me but I'm really enjoying it already.

Although I can't help reading it without a Brian Cox voice inside my head.

I'm about two thirds through. Fuck the haters!

It's not as good as his others though, unless it picks up in the last hundred pages. It's more of a tour guide to be honest.

Well, it's at least better than the last one.

The last 150 pages offer some nice twists but on the whole Brown's "formula" starts to wear thin. He should start to write something different.

Dan Brown for me too. I really enjoyed the last one but I'm finding Inferno a bit weak to be honest.

For all his faults as a writer the thing you normally get from Brown is an interesting concept fleshed out with some revealing information about art, sculpture and architecture. However, the plot here isn't as interesting as it normally is and I think he may have reached the nadir of his actual writing. I can normally overlook that aspect as the plot zips along but in this case it's particularly jarring.

"It could have all been so different but for the coo of the dove". Really?!? Or when writing as an Italian character speaking English "Hello, eez me. I try to warn you - eez terrible" - Yes Mr Brown it really eez terrible.
