Finished The Sheltering Sky today. Brilliant book. Will be picking up more of Paul Bowles' work.

Next up I shall be reading...

I'm about 130 pages in and not finding anyone frustrating as of yet, it has to be said.

Whats helping immensely is that although I haven't seen the film, I know which actor plays which of the main characters and I can totally see each of them acting out the scenes/dialogue in the book.

The film could be completely different, of course. Might watch it afterwards to see the differences, if any!

Finished Enduring Love. Rather enjoyed it. Pleased with how it ended (all tied up neatly), it would have been frustrating any other way.

Started this today, so far a nice chunk of creepy horror set in Brooklyn...

I just found some of their decisions frustrating. I suppose this is actually a good thing about the book because it helped immerse me in the book. I was just screaming (metaphorically!) at the characters to discuss things and stop being stupid.

True. Clarissa's complete dismissal of it seems ridiculous and really just seems to be a ploy to bring in the whole potential "he's imagining it" angle.

Quite funny in places, though.


Really enjoying Bedbugs as a piece of hokum horror...

I've just finished reading The Casual Vacancy by J.K Rowling - a really thought-provoking book that reminded me of John Steinbeck's Cannery Row.

I am about to start The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch...

Good thriller! Generally not one for reading entire series of books I'm not sure my attention/patience would stretch to 16 boks and counting, but I'd definitely read another. Can see why they chose that book for the film - seems like a good inroduction to Jack Reacher.

Now reading:



Continuing my way through the Roald Dahl boxset - good solid fun, and brings back memories!

Maus is bloody outstanding. One of my favourite graphic novels of all time. A really harrowing, funny at times, uplifting story. Art Spiegelman's artwork is superb. Let us knowwhat your thoughts are after finishing!


I thought it was a great read! Always utterly compelling, sad and disturbing in places but as you say, not without it's humourous moments.

What I did like was that it was much to do with the relationship between Art and his father as the holocaust narrative itself. I was expecting it to be purely a straight narrative of his father's Holocaust experiences, so the fact that it was done as a kind of 'story within a story' was a pleasant surprise!

Interesting and a good read, although taking me longer than I thought it would to get through. The older writing style is very far from being impenatrable, but I'm still finding it just that little bit jarring enough to have to read pretty carefully...

at the moment, which I am absolutely LOVING.

Though I can't help but feel that I might need a lighter more modern novel to have some respite every now and again, any suggestions on a good complementary read?

It lacks the offbeat humour of Jagged Little Vein (but then how can you beat scrotal inflation) but is a decent read. The presentation of New York as an unwelcoming often malign place is very reminiscent to The City in Transmetropolitan (not surprising really), and the continuous levels of misanthropy can become a bit wearing after a while. That said still a good book.

Just finished The Man Who Forget His Wife by John O'Farrell - light and funny yet sharp and sad when it needs to be, it won't change your life but it certainly made mine that little bit smilier for a couple of weeks.

 Finished The Leopard by Jo Nesbo
Largely enjoyable thriller, if a bit long-winded and baggy, featuring plenty of twisty twists. I've only read The Snowman in the rest of the series, but Nesbo doesn't seem sure of whether Harry Hole should be a 'real' flawed character or some sort of indestructible supercop. He ends up as both, which stretches credibility somewhat, even allowing for the nature of this genre.
