CATTLE DECAPITATION CATTLE DECAPITATION have posted information on the band's official MySpace page concerning their upcoming tour and drummer issues: "We're very excited to not only finally do our own headlining tour, but also to get back out and deliver the tracks from our new "Karma.Bloody.Karma" album to the masses. The last thing we want to do right now is to stay home and not be out on the road! We're glad to have a seasoned guy like Kevin Talley (ex-DYING FETUS, MISERY INDEX, and CHIMAIRA) filling in. It will be a refreshing change to get someone in there that's as professional in his approach to touring as the rest of the guys in the band. See you soon!" The full story can be read here. ------------------ IN FLAMES According to Nielsen SoundScan, U.S. sales figures for IN FLAMES' Come Clarity album have surpassed 100,000 copies. Come Clarity, the highly-influential band's debut for Ferret Music, took the hard rock community by storm upon its release, debuting at #58 on the Billboard Top 200 with first week sales of nearly 25,000 copies. The highest charting record in both the band and label's sales history, Come Clarity has met to widespread critical acclaim and solidified IN FLAMES' place as leaders of the modern day heavy music movement. The album has been hailed as "a coordinated stampede" by Billboard, "A rare blend of speed, precision, heaviness and melody" by the Chicago Tribune and "both fierce and sentimental" by the New York Times, who praised the Swedish band for its "grand, galloping sound". IN FLAMES is also seeing success at radio with the launch of the first U.S. commercial campaign in the band's storied history. Active Rock stations across the country have been adding the new single, "Come Clarity" to their playlists, with early adds from tastemaker stations WJJO (Madison, WI), KFRQ (McAllen, TX) and great support from KMYZ (Tulsa, OK) and XM Radio leading the charge. These are the first commercial radio adds ever for IN FLAMES, and also a first for Ferret Music. "Come Clarity" showcases the powerful songwriting that IN FLAMES is known for, as well as the band's crossover potential, incorporating acoustic guitars, impassioned vocals and a bombastic chorus. -------------- THE BERZERKER Grind masters THE BERZERKER have announced winter headlining tour dates alongside fellow extreme acts MIKSHA, NEKKROSIS, ABGOTT and BAZOOKA. Homme unceremoniously dumped the bassist from the rock outfit in 2004, and it's something that touches a raw nerve with Oliveri. Speaking to Gigwise.com, he bursted: "He sold himself short thinking he is 'The Guy,' he should be just the JOSH HOMME BAND," says Oliveri. "[QOTSA] got to be pretty big, so for any one person to think it was just them on their own is just absurd." He also hit out at QUEEN OF THE STONE AGE's 2005 effort, claiming Homme "dropped the ball" and the guitars were nowhere to be seen. Oliveri continued: "When there are a lot of kids following your guitar playing for many years and then you turn round and release something that is so compressed and small, you are fucking them (the fans) over. "If you are gonna start from zero, and start a new sound, then I wish he would at least give me chance to use the name and do something with it." --------------------- HE HAUNTED Frontman Pissing In The Wind THE HAUNTED frontman Peter Dolving has posted the following message on his MySpace page: "What is the big deal with discussing stuff like economical system or religion? "It's amusing how people are so eager to attack as soon as anyone simply sets about and types the right trigger words. Sometimes I think maybe I should be a little less sloppy, watch my step to not piss anyone off? "... Nah, fuck that. "I wish I had the diligence it takes to be this heavy sociopolitical pencil pusher but I'm not, I'm a dude in a band. And I make no other claim. And yes, I admit holding a most human grudge towards the Christian church, never mind if it's catholic, protestant, anglican, baptist, mormon or whatever. Also when I look around at what is the political and economic geography that is the reality surrounding most of us I see a society long past its expire date. "I mean, honestly, why are we accepting models of society, hierachy and religion that are so out of date? The general way most of us view the planet, our fellow animals, and ourselves is through serious cuckoo-goggles. Way off the mark. C'mon! We are humans. We put our kind on the moon. We split the atom. We make plates from corn starch and eat ants! And for some reason, we seem to hate ourselves... "I like to blame stuff. For the sake of argument. As fucked as that may seem, it makes for good shit pie tossing. And I like a good pie toss. Well folks, I blame Christianity for the state of the world. Simple as that. "The Christian church is built on the notion of one top dog. His kid. And a ghost... or something. Most of us pretty much agree on that. Next up is the clergy and the dogs dudes on earth. This ever since Paulus; this one dude who according to the book of dog had a revelation on the road to Damaskus and heard the voice of the Kid, or his spirit or possibly may have experienced an epeleptic seizure and hallucinated the whole thing (the book doesn't specify...) and off he went. A one a two a three and whopee, more or less single handed he kick started the first bunch of congregations in which the story of the almighty peaceful carpenter/hibbie/revolutionary and his wonders all kinda stood at centre. So far so good, sorta kinda. "Well, for a lot of Christians that's the official story. "Personally, I never bought it, being the little oppositional prick I am. Simply because there are discrepancies all over the place that the idea of 'Faith' just don't hold up to. 'Faith' being the foundation of Paulus' whole deal with a religious movement you might think it would hold up to scrutiny... But I'll get back to the 'Faith' part later... "Now, the fact that the Book of dog tells us, not first-hand stories, but third-hand (or worse) recaps of what really went down in the land of old Jewish dudes don't do much for me as far as credibility goes. Anywho — the churchos expect me to give them money and my devotion for them to presumably 'save' people... From what? "That question has always been a biggie for me. Sure, I know it's supposedly the old 'sin' thing, but I ain't ever felt painfully guilty except for this one time when I fucked this great and really hot chick who happened to be married to one of my friends, and, yes, my girlfriend at the time walked in on us... except for that, and few other little episodes, I figure my lack deeper feelings of guilt must count for something... In fact, I'm pretty sure it counts for something. "Okay, so I've done some remarkably stupid, despicable, mean, cruel and even disgusting things so far in life, but in my book those go for learning experiences and I'll live with it. Regrets? It's a little late for that once you fuck up. I try not to repeat the most dumbass crap I've done. When I think about it, I'm pretty grateful I wasn't born perfect and I don't even want to be — that would just be boring and it wouldn't make a good story would it? "But back to the bible thumpers... The whole 'inherit sin' crap just fucking gets on my nerves. Ain't no pious asswipe in a fancy outfit and ridiculous little white collar with a degree in pseodo psychology and superstition gonna help me out by telling me that 'the lord' will forgive me etc. if I repent and redeem myself. Hell. No. I ain't walking in no desert deprived of sleep and water, ridden by guilt for having killed and tortured a bunch of people like good old Paulus did. Nope, I'm doin pretty good diggin' the here and now in a tired corrupt old Christian capitalism where Paulus' sunstroke just had a tad too much influence for my personal comfort and an ex-SS officer can become pope. Oh, by the way — the old fart is also the ex-Grand Inquisitor... I keep thinking 'Torquemada, Torquemada, Torquemada...' "Where was I? Yes! 'Faith'... And what a beautiful thing it is. Personally I like the idea of faith as such. Accepting there is something greater than myself makes the unbearable dread of existence somehow bearable. But I can't bring myself to believe that my submission to the principles of an institution that has spent the last 2000 years with systematic political manipulation, self-justified wars, consigned assasinations, torture, mass slaughter, ruthless propaganda and thought control, will bring me any closer to paradise. It don't compute. Christianity is a corrupt idea as such. Rotten to the core with utilitaristic elitism and abysmal fanaticism. If one considers the acts of ie. the Rothschild, Kennedy and Bush families somewhere in the zone of somewhat morally corrupt (and yes, they are...) one still has to abide they are saints in comparison to the power structures existing within what we call christianity. "So, 'Faith'... Such a vague and abstract idea that it can't really be argued with. 'Faith' can overcome any obstacle, be it of economic nature or in the shape of a razorblade slicing the skin between your fingers — if you have 'faith' it can bring you through anything. Nevertheless, 'Faith' is just a word. What each individual fills the concept with will never be quiet the same from one person to another. Paulus for some reason understood this, and built his entire idea for the cult that later became known as 'Christianity' on the very concept of 'Faith'. Brilliant from a marketing point of view, because it simply can't be argued, if one's got it they got it. The Church are the undisputible masters of what has been known in marketing as 'friendly branding.' For almost 2000 years the Christian clergy has mastered the skill of preaching piety, condemnation and redemption to the unexpecting fold. Meanwhile though acting morally corrupt in every possible way whenever the clergy's higher authority so finds it necessary. A means to an end. This is exactly the same kind of reasoning used by good old Gauis Julius Ceasar, Machiavelli, Cromwell, the self-exclaimed emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, the U.S. goverment from the 1850s until today, Josef Stalin, Adolf Hitler, Chairman Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot, Saddam Hussein etc. Most rational people pretty much agree that it's power for the sake of power and that it infringes on the basic rights to freedom for the singular individual. Now, if you are the kind of person who enjoy that kind of thing — fine... I'm not. I think it's bullshit. But it's all a matter of taste and opinion right? "So why is the idea of church and religious dogma pissing me off so much? "Easy — I like to be my own boss. I like to work and to play and live with people who respect and trust themselves enough to try and do that with at least the attempt of treating their fellow man and themselves accordingly. It's not easy. Nope. But when we make mistakes at least we can ask forgiveness and learn something. And when we don't know what to do, it's no big loss or failure to say so and ask for help. What the fuck! Why does accepting the fact that incompleteness is a natural part of being human seem so hard for so many? Why the haste for perfection? We are blank sheets, at least that's what it looks like to me. "No knowledge we study ourselves to or acquire through experience is static. Everything is fluid. It's everchanging and there is no way to know. All the more reason for us to not bow in the face of any authority. Certainly, one can listen to and obey an officer of the law who tells us not to walk into an ongoing bank robbery or a shoot out. Mostly, since we can assume it's in our own or his interest to protect us. Hopefully, we can fairly presume so. Also, we can accept a teacher asking us to be silent and listen during a lecture. Simply to hear what the guy has to say, which of course is the whole point of a lecture. On the other hand, if a goverment tells me to pick up a gun and go off to kill people in an another country, I fail to see why I should abide. It would jeopardize my health, and the health of others. It would also steal my time, and the time of others. It would physically place me too far away from what I want to do in my life and from the people I love and no matter how one looks at it; a stranger far from home with a gun in his hand is hardly going to bring a sense of peace and bright harmony to his new enviroment. It's an individual choice as far as I'm concerned. Personally I refuse. "Again, let's return to the concept of 'Faith.' If we accept the presets of Christian dogma, it's simple do to highly amoral things without assuming ones own responsibilty, instead merely shrug, comfortably numb in the alibi provided by 'Faith' and give up ones self in the name of 'God and Country.' Indeed, the political construction of christianity is wonderfully authoritarian and will side with most goverments who are benign to the christian 'Faith.' Whoever promotes or at least does not create obstacles for 'Faith' will have the blessing of the church. Naturally the Christian establishment has sided with obscure characters like The King of Spain, Queen Elizabeth, Benito Mussoulini, Generalissimo Franco, Winston Churchill, the Romanoffs, and indeed hundreds upon hundreds of other despots through history. The Pope himself, said to be dogs voice on earth, says some crazy shit, I think most people can agree with that statement. Hell, the very idea of a divine patriarch in charge of 'Faith' for a vast number of believers all over the world is insane. Pope, Ayathollah, Czar, Emperor, Furher, King, CEO etc. etc. yep, the top dog is always prevalent in the last couple of housand years of our planets history. There is nothing righteous or justified about it. No man is better at ruling than another. No one. Every time I hear arguments that contradict this statement I cringe. Because more than anything, the argument that '...some are just better suited than others' pops up. What kind of fascist nonsense is that? This is not an argument, it is wild speculation and merely an opinion based in the idea often utilized by liberals, neo-cons, neo-libs and other pro authority characters. The same people who often in debate claim that we are all born with the same preconditions. So, let's quickly run through this again... Why would a person not feel animosity to christianity and what it represents? "I'll take a little sidetrack here while I'm at it. I know I already mentioned my thoughts on capitalism. I understand some won't agree with me, but still, it's as outdated as everything else most of us have already tossed as old shoes, like Communism, National Socialism, Feodalism etc. Capitalism is about as sexy as a crumpled up wart covered, skin and bonesy kidney failure losing hair with nails growning at a mad rate. Think Donald Trump with a progressed case of AIDS, tuberculosis and multiple brain, skin and lung hematomas. Sexy... "I understand playing in a band professionally, selling records and charging money from promotors to perform the music we've made all adds up to the fact that I am indeed part of the capitalist construction. Am I benefitting from it? Well, according to capitalist standards, well yes. After 15 years of giving up my entire life for the right to do this for a living, I am now making some money. You know, I'm diggin that fact OK. Money is great, as opposed to no money — in a capitalist world... Now it honestly ain't the dough that's making this feel good. It's having a place of my own with my family. I can afford occasional gifts for my family and sometimes even my friends. It's having food in my kitchen and people to share it with. That don't need capitalism to be achieved. There are other options. Giving up capitalism does not mean we have to give up most of the good fun stuff in life. Money in itself is just a token symbol to divide those with legislative and executive power from those without. Without money, there is nothing to divide us. The interesting thing is; The incentive to grow and prepare food, build infrastrucure and housing, create art, entertainment and provide health care and education still prevails without money. And there is no escaping we are bound to still need administrative functions. "Basically, the only ones who need money are those who have a great abundance of it and make more through transactions of before mentioned 'power,' with money as the token symbol, dictating the conditions for the rest of us who work for a living. I am aware this is an overtly simplified version of thing, but nevertheless it sums up the basics of a major part of the problems we face as a species. Naturally these thoughts don't go down well with some folks. Well, they can suck my dick. "The economic situation today is come to a point where reality is catching up with the 'Free Market' scam. Each singular economical territory is beginning to show signs of strain. The signs are obvious if one watches the political geography and just a little bit of history. Both the U.S. and EU are tightening their border restrictions and trade rule legislation via elevated taxes, and further complicating the conditions and rules for international travel and trade, contradicting the ever ongoing pro globalization folly. Meanwhile there are indications of elevated military activity directed at the chosen scape goats of the moment and an obvious trend to a more conservative, potentially totalitarian rightwing political scene. Things looked somewhat like this before the so-called Black Monday in 1929... "Well, I'm not going to pretend to know what will happen, because I don't. As far as I know little green men could invade the planet any minute so bear with me... "The subject of power, religion and money IS important. It's our fucking planet. I don't care what stock portfolio you claim, what land deed you present or what millitary frontiers are drawn up by generals and petroleum industry lobbyists. It's all OURS. There is no way I will ever respect singular ownership in the capitalist definition of the word. It's ridiculous. We are all just part of a greater ecologic structure. No more evolved than some fungae and even our bodies carry elements completely autonomous from us. We will end up destroying ourselves if we can't learn to accept the fact that WE are NOT divine. There is NO GOD as defined by the Judeo, Christian, Hindu and Islamic traditions. We are merely clouts of atoms and electrical charges in an everchanging cosmos of great beauty and magnificent turmoil of life, void and movement. However, we hold in our hands the capacity to accept our own existence as a species and the vast potential we are gifted with, in large and small. If we give up the petty struggles of competetive nonsense, religious territorialism and monetary illusionism and try looking at the fact that we are indeed mortal, physically limited yet creative creatures, like protozoae or bacteriae — we do carry a deeper instinct for life. It's nature. We have nothing but beauty to gain. Hell, we might even get a load of how cool and even incredible it really is to be alive surrounded by the vast cold vacuum that is the universe. "And as far as politicians, popes and clergy, CEOs, investment and holding companies, militarists and power trippers in general go, I say; Send out the ambulances, the cops and the firebrigade, incarcerate, and strap down theses clowns who still believe in the old structures, pump 'em full of of muscle relaxers and tranquilizers and let the treatment begin. They are not evil men and women. These people need help. They just can't let go of their own fear of death, and accept that we are all together on a tiny blue orb in an unimaginably vast space of things beyond our control. Give the fuckers enough love and caring and I'm sure they'll relax and loosen up once they realize it's the same for all of us and that we are not holding them account." ---------------------------------- HAMMERFALL An audio interview with HAMMERFALL guitarist Oscar Dronjak, conducted recently by Baconmusic's James Allman, has been posted online at this location. ---------------- PROGPOWER UK Festival LEAVES' EYES — the German/Norwegian band formed by ex-THEATRE OF TRAGEDY singer Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull and members of ATROCITY (who are fronted by Liv's husband Alexander Krull) — has been confirmed for next year's ProgPower UK festival, set to take place March 31, 2007 at The Centaur indoor arena, Cheltenham Racecourse, Cheltenham, England. The festival's final lineup is as follows: JON OLIVA'S PAIN KAMELOT LEAVES' EYES COMMUNIC HAGGARD DREAMSCAPE SCAR SYMMETRY CLOUDSCAPE For more information, visit www.progpoweruk.com. ------------------- DAVE MUSTAINE Says New MEGADETH Album Will Be Released In March Australia's The Metal Forge recently conducted an interview with MEGADETH mainman Dave Mustaine. A few excerpts from the chat follow: On Gigantour: "Gigantour is about the spirit of heavy metal, not just MEGADETH. It's not about Dave Mustaine. It's not about any one band. It's about metal. And the fans understand that. Gigantour has been fantastic and beautiful. We've seen fans sacrificing cattle and young critters, so everything's been perfect. And that Gigantour spirit is so dominant in Australia. Australia's a very hardcore country, with a huge number of metal enthusiasts. They deserve this. It's been a long time coming for fans down there to have a festival that's pure metal, without the bullshit. They need the real deal, and you know what? I'm just the kind of guy to help them get it together. We're getting into partnerships with the promoter down there right now to make Gigantour an annual thing. This is something that's going to continue on every year now. We only have a couple more shows to go and then we're heading down your way. The Big Day Out will soon become the Small Day Out, motherfuckers.” On MEGADETH's upcoming album, "United Abominations": "There's a couple of little things that need to be finished, but as soon as they're done, we'll start mixing it. What I can tell you though is that this new album isn't anything like 'The System Has Failed' (2004). I love this album! This album makes my nipples so hard you could use them to cut glass. I'm totally excited by this album. But having said that, I'm not going to tell you what it sounds like, because if I say it sounds like this, you're only going to say that it sounds like that. We should just sit down, have a couple of drinks and listen to it together. It's only then that know what I'm talking about, and I can watch as the album socks you in the face! (Laughs)" "'United Abominations' will be released in March. I hate those phrases which say sometime early next year, maybe, could, unknown, as of yet and temporarily. If I have to get out there like The Naked Cowboy (who is otherwise known as Robert Burck) in Times Square (New York) and sing in my underwear, this album will be released in March. While there's a lot of girls that would line up to see me singing in my underwear, I would like to avoid that and see the album come out officially." On the upcoming live effort, entitled "That One Night: Live in Buenos Aires", which will be released on both on CD and DVD through Image Entertainment: "That comes out soon. The main focus of that is the DVD, not so much the CD. The CD. is purely for the collectors out there who want to have the audio component as well as the visual. The visual show is what it's all about. I think most people want to see what a real MEGADETH audience looks like, and this is it. I mean, I've been bragging about them for the last fifteen years. People want to see who these fuckers are! (Laughs) I can guarantee you that when you see this show, you're going to say, 'Oh my God! Mustaine was right!' We're mental on the stage, right? But those fucking Latinos man, they're on something. There's something in the water! They're passionate. No wonder the Latino women are so fierce." According to one person who attended the concert, "Dio and Tate [QUEENSRŸCHE frontman Geoff Tate] were awesome together!!! Ronnie was spectacular... he improvised a couple of times and was just incredible! Dio and Tate played each other to a 'T'. What a performance by both!! AWESOME!!! Ronnie was into it. He was playing Dr. X and showed the emotion of 'X' excellently. Ronnie was fluid and moving like he did 10 years ago. Just incredible. In the end, Dio never took the stage again; he sang his song then vanished. Still, he played an incredible part of the show..." More bands will be announced soon. ----------- SEPULTURA Guitarist Discusses Upcoming Solo CD Matthew Hoffman of Hardrock Haven recently conducted an interview with SEPULTURA guitarist Andreas Kisser. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow: Hardrock Haven: Andreas I read that you were a roadie for SEPULTURA before joining the band. Is that true? Andreas: Well, there was a killer underground metal scene in Brazil back in the mid-'80s, and I played in a band in Sao Paolo. We played covers from band like IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, KISS, QUEEN and DEEP PURPLE. One night at a gig I helped SEPULTURA set up, and that's how I met the band. When they needed a guitarist, I got the job. Hardrock Haven: As an avid guitar fan, I am amazed at the different ways people learned and developed as guitarists. How were you able to go from underground to mainstream and writing and playing such amazing riffs and rhythms? How were you trained? Andreas: I had acoustic guitar lessons when I was younger. But I think living in Brazil really helped me as well. This country is so huge from the North to the South there are more musical influences then in any country on earth. There are so many different styles to explore that helped me keep the guitar fresh with the entire amazingly inspiring guitar playing around. It helped me incorporate a lot of fresh new layers to my music. Hardrock Haven: How have the tour dates been so far? And how is the album ["Dante XXI"] being received among your fans and friends. Andreas: I think it has been unanimously well received. I have heard nothing but good things. I think the fans are starting to understand the actual theme of it as a 'Divine Comedy' too. You know we had to change a lot when Max left the band. We had to fill the gap of the guitar that was gone. But it was possible because Max really only played four with four strings and in concert he was more about being the charismatic stage presence and band leader, not a serious guitarist. So we used Paulo to help us fill that on bass guitar, and also with the percussion. On this album we kept to the basics but also used cellos and some horns. Hardrock Haven: OK, now tell me all about this amazing new solo project you are working on. Andreas: Well, it's gonna be a double CD, with one acoustic styled record and one electric one, probably 10 songs on each. I am using some of the material from SEPULTURA that we never used for the electric stuff. As for the vocals, I will be doing some of them and also I am going to bring in some of my friends from other bands to sing as well. There will be some in Portugese and some in English as well. I got a chance when this was offered to me from a small Dutch label and they really are giving me the freedom I need to explore different styles and techniques. Hardrock Haven: Any killer speed metal virtuoso kind of tracks on there? Andreas: No, there will not be any masturbation solos on this album. I want to try and run away with clichés as much as possible. I am a guitarist that loves moods and soundtrack kind of music tracks. I also am going to try and play as many of the instruments on the album as well. I'm planning on playing bass guitar, drums and other percussion and all guitars. Read the entire interview at www.hardrockhaven.net. ------------------- CANNIBAL CORPSE: Video Footage From Sydney Concert Posted Online Over 10 minutes of video footage (including the song "Hammer Smashed Face" in its entirety) and a load of photos from the second Sydney CANNIBAL CORPSE gig of their Australian tour (Sunday, October 8, 2006) have been posted online at PyroMusic.net ----------------------- SATYRICON Drummer On Wearing Makeup Live: 'It's A Look That Fits With Our Musical Expression A new interview with SATYRICON drummer Frost was posted on the Roadrunner Records U.K. web site. A few excerpts from the chat follow: Q: In addition to SATYRICON, you feature in 1349, despite both bands being under the same genre your drumming technique differs between them. Why is this? And do you find one band more rewarding then the other? Frost: SATYRICON and 1349 have different musical expressions, which require different drumming styles. In warfare, SATYRICON would be the unit destined to take out strategically important structures with surgical precision, while 1349 would be doing the carpet-bombing. In SATYRICON I need to find optimal and smooth yet powerful drumming solutions that must always be adjusted to maintain a sense of totality as the other musical elements are brought in. In 1349 I get to cultivate and develop my really extreme abilities as a drummer, we all go in there with maximum brutality and force and build around that. Both approaches are fine M.O.s in their own respective ways and complement each other perfectly. Q: You recently shot the video for "The Pentagram Burns"? Can you tell us a bit about the meaning behind the video? Frost: "The Pentagram Burns" is a song that has a very dark, ceremonial feel, at times quite mystical and creepy, at other times firm and aggressive. The video is meant to visually enhance and amplify these atmospheres, which indeed it does. Q: Can you tell us a bit about the writing process for the current album, "Now, Diabolical"? Frost: We set out to do good, powerful black metal songs in a traditional sense (but SATYRICON style). In other words, we wanted the atmosphere and the musical energy flow to do the talking, not the musicality or techniques. When Satyr and I worked in the rehearsal room, we needed to constantly monitor the effects that every element had on the wholeness and take actions if the energy flow was in anyway effected negatively. Now, that's the art of composing, anyway. Q: Why do you choose to wear makeup on stage? Is it part of a ritual, or perhaps to distance you from the audience? Frost: Partly because it's a look that fits well with our musical expression, partly because applying the make up functions as a ritual that stimulates or enhances concentration. In addition, the group has entered a New York City studio with engineer Paul Northfield (RUSH, QUEENSRŸCHE, SUICIDAL TENDENCIES, MARILYN MANSON) to begin recording its follow-up to 2005's "Octavarium", tentatively due next April/May. A few excerpts from Portnoy's "Friday Night Rocks" interview follow: On current label negotiations and new album recordings: "We didn't wanna sit around waiting to close up the deal and deal with all the legal paperwork and all that, and have to wait until all that was done to start the record, so we booked the studio time — we wanted to start the record — so we started a month ago. But we've been meeting with lots of labels since we are here in New York [City recording], and I think we're probably days to weeks away from making a decision and making an announcement." "We've done all of this pretty much on our own at this point. The labels thus far have… With the exception of our heyday 15 years ago, with 'Images and Words' and everything — other than that, we've pretty much just built this thing on our own, so it'll be amazing to see what we can do with a little bit of support." "We are currently making our new album with Paul Northfield engineering. DREAM THEATER's had the same engineer for the last 10 years — this guy Doug Oberkircher — and for the sake of getting some fresh ears with us in the making of the new album, we're working with Paul, and Paul did [RUSH's] 'Permanent Waves', 'Moving Pictures', and 'Signals', as well as some of the newer stuff, so we're getting RUSH stories every day from Paul about the making of those albums, and how they recorded the guitar solo for 'Limelight'; he would tell us about the change of tide with 'Signals', and stuff. So we're hearing RUSH stories every day. It's really cool. Paul is an awesome guy." On jamming with OVERKILL at a recent Gigantour stop in New Jersey and the possibility of doing a "heavy" side project in the future: "Yeah, those guys [OVERKILL] are awesome. Man, I gotta do a heavy side project. I just love playing that heavy stuff. "Me and Mikael [Åkerfeldt] from OPETH and Steven Wilson from PORCUPINE TREE, the three of us have been talking about doing something for a long time now, it's just been a matter of our schedules not working out, but I think it's inevitable that this project will come off in the near future, as soon as we can find a window that all three of us can together. "I've done so many projects through the years, but none of them were like a real metal project. I've done prog things or classic-rock things or — you know, OSI, TRANSATLANTIC, those were kind of more proggy — but I've never done like a real metal thing, and that's so much in my blood." On spending a day with RUSH drummer Neil Peart recently: "We did an interview together — an interview and a photo session — for a drum magazine in England called Rhythm. I haven't even announced this yet, but this is a really cool thing that I'm gonna be doing for Rhythm where they're letting me be the guest editor of an issue, and I get to interview and get together with several of my big influences. So I got together with Neil, I got together with Nick Mason from PINK FLOYD, [and] I'm gonna be doing Lars [Ulrich; METALLICA] and Bill Bruford [YES] next month when I get home from South America. Anyway, it's gonna be a really super-cool issue, and Neil was totally accomodating. As soon as I contacted him about doing this, he was totally on board — super-cool. We met and had a great time." On never having met Peart before the recent get-together: "It's funny. He's the one guy that's eluded me all of these years. I've met everybody — from Ringo [Starr], all across the board — but Neil was so elusive. All these years, I was thinking he was dodging me. I was starting to to take it personally. But he welcomed me with open arms. He was really, really cool. He's an incredibly cool guy." ------------------------ SLAYER, DISTURBED, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, LAMB OF GOD On 'Saw III' Soundtrack Warcon Enterprises has set an October 24 release date for the "Saw III" soundtrack. "I am not necessarily surprised," he said. "I thought, from day one, because of the way that it felt when we got together and started writing songs, that it was going to be good," Cornell responded. "I knew we would make great records, so there would probably be an audience. I felt that the negative connotations of so-called supergroups were based on the wrong examples, which are more recent ones that people remember from the late '80s and early '90s, like DAMN YANKEES and ASIA and all that other crap. But the fact of the matter is, if you go further back, look at the bands that came out of the SMALL FACES — some incredible bands came out of those initial bands, so they were all essentially supergroups. You ended up with LED ZEPPELIN, BAD COMPANY, and CROSBY, STILLS, NASH AND YOUNG. You wouldn't thinkn of any of those being a bad idea." ------------------ GODYVA Italian gothic metal sensations GODYVA have uploaded their video for the song "In Good and Evil" at YouTube.com. A couple of excerpts follow: "We are far into the writing of our new CD. Everyone is living and breathing this record 24/7 and we're all excited. We spend most of our time holed up in a couple different DILLINGER living/writing spots, including an underground lair and a house with an interior that resembles the one from 'Fight Club', rarely coming outside or even being awake during daylight hours for that matter, living like little rats. We only come out for Dunkin Donuts or 24-hour grocery stores at 3am. "Rest assured, the album will come out much sooner than our previous track record would indicate. We appreciate everyone's patience... Good things come to those who wait. Uh... unless you're waiting for the new GUNS N' ROSES record, which apparently is coming out November 21st, 'cause that shit is gonna be an abomination, mark my words. I hope I'm wrong, but seriously, since Slash rolled the fuck out, braided Axl imposter guy has had not only a guy who wears a chicken bucket on his head filling in for him but about 30 other dorks too. None of whom have magical top hats that somehow never fall off and none of whom have a cool name like Slash or even Corpsefucker, for that matter. The forecast is here and the outlook is decidedly GRIM. Get Adler back and stop dicking around." THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN recently released a digital-only EP, entitled "Plagiarism". The EP features "Unretrofied" (from "Miss Machine"), interpretations of NINE INCH NAILS' "Wish", MASSIVE ATTACK's "Angel", SOUNDGARDEN's "Jesus Christ Pose" and JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE's "Like I Love You", as well as previously unreleased live material. Many of these covers have been heard during the band's live sets over the past several years but remained unrecorded until this EP. Q: I am a fellow female death/black metal singer, who was recently diagnosed with vocal nodules. It's hard for me not to accept that this is the end of the road in regards to my voice...but I've read that you too have had them at one time. This afternoon I am going to see a speech therapist, and from what I have read, that may greatly increase my chances of regaining my singing/growling voice. I have been in a number of bands, and am currently working on my first solo effort, a collaboration of many a musician. My voice is something I need, I was born to do this, and I would appreciate any suggestions/advise you could give me to get back on track. I didn't make it to your show when you came to Vancouver, but I did ask a buddy how your voice sounded. He said: BOOMING; it was amazing. I was taken aback as I had heard you had been having vocal cord difficulties. So, if you could give me any glimpse of hope while I sit on the verge of losing my voice, it would be greatly appreciated!! Angela: "Hey Laura, do not give up, nodules are curable!!! Is it nodes (hard bumps) or nodules (soft ones) you got on your vocal cords? Hard ones have to be removed surgically, the soft ones you can train off with the right exercises. Humming in the morning — before talking — is a good way to warm up the voice and get the cords swinging simultaneously. If your voice sounds rough, hum until it sounds more even. "Anyway, no screaming until they are gone. A speech therapist will show you lots of exercises that will basically help the vocal cords to function normally again whilst at the same time taking the strain from the spot where the nodules are (this is basically the place where your cords hit together first when you scream). When your nodules are gone, start with easy SINGING exercises and breathing exercises. For this you should go to a professional singing teacher!!! Breathing the right way will take a lot of force from the cords. When you scream — do you pump your chest full of air or is your belly expanding like a balloon? If the air is up in your chest, it's way too much pressure on your throat and your cords and one of the main reasons you got into trouble. "I am currently setting up a website that deals with vocal advice. I am also being trained being a singing/screaming teacher myself. Most normal singing teacher cringe when they hear what you are doing with your voice. They don't understand this technique (you are basically singing with your false cords as well, you don't do this for 'normal' singing at all). But please don't let them discourage you. Just tell them all you want to learn is good breath support, warm-up exercises and simple scales. Normal singing trains the voice in a different way then screaming and keeps the cords flexible and strong. "What range are you in? Hearing your samples I guess you have a rather high range, like soprano or mezzo-soprano. That means your vocal cords are thin. Women who have deep voices (alto or contralto) have it much easier with the screaming. Their vocal chords are thicker and simply take more abuse. So you have to train and strengthen your voice in order to do the screaming without harming your voice. "Make sure to let your voice heal totally before you start screaming again! You don't want to permanently damage your voice and maybe lose it altogether. Do you smoke and drink? You never warm up before you scream? Do you drink lots of acid forming soda? Do you have allergies or taking drugs? If yes is the answer to any of these questions — my advice: quit it!!! Especially smoking (I had to quit too). Or sort it out, like allergies." Q: I love your vocals. You're a woman with balls!!! I need to get that screaming DVD you're in with Melissa Cross. I'm looking into ways of screaming without damaging my vocals. Can you give me any tips? By the way, after a long concert, do you feel like your vocal muscles tend to get tightened, do they hurt or have they ever caused any pain? Angela: "Hey Diana, I listened to your bands sound files. You are currently singing melodic, no screaming right? Are you a soprano? "I talked with Floor Jansen from AFTER FOREVER about mixing classic vocals and death growls. It is almost impossible, only works if you are an alto with extremely resistant vocal cords. If you start screaming, you will lose the high range for sure. After a long tour, my cords are shot. I can still scream and growl but my upper head voice is gone. This vocal style is about sacrificing your voice somehow. "My throat and jaw muscles get tight after the first couple of shows when I haven't trained them enough in my time off. These exercises help: Stretching the upper pallet (sort of yawning to loosen things up) and depressing the tongue with a finger to massage tension out. Always stretch your neck muscles after a show (headbanging makes them pretty sore). My chords don't hurt; I have no sore throat after a show, not even when we play 90 minutes. But my throat is very used to this 'singing' style. ARCH ENEMY play more than 200 shows a year. "Definitely get the DVD, it's full of good tips and a great warm-up. It won't teach you how to scream though. For being save when you start, you got to have a vocal teacher who does this in front of you watching your every breath and move of abdomen, throat, larynx and shoulders. "If screaming hurts you, do NOT do it, otherwise you will wreck your wonderful singing voice." Q: When do you start teaching and where? That would be very great to have you as a teacher in Europe! How did you find out you have a "different" vocal voice? You said that you can get higher tones now, which I can hear clearly on the "Doomsday Machine". How long had it take you to catch that? My voice is quite deep at the moment and needs breath technique but is that possible to make it higher by time (or if I have deep voice, is it going to stay deep forever)? I've already found lots of information in Melissa's website, and in a few days time I'm going to buy the DVD (can't wait!). By the way, do you plan a DVD for beginners in the future? Angela: "I simply started out screaming my lungs out when I was 16 years old. I didn't know at all what I was doing; I was simply able to do 'that sound.' I damaged my voice back then though. "Yes, you can get high screams with a rather deep voice, but it takes time and careful approach. High screams mean that the vocal chords are stretched to the max and this renders them more vulnerable. They are under a lot of tension. You should start with singing and trying to develop your head voice to its full capacity. Then try to turn this into a scream. When it hurts, stop and go back to the singing. "A good exercise to train breath support: Lie on your back, or sit/stand straight. Inhale deeply (feel your belly move out, your rips and your back should expand too). Hold the breath for a count of 3, purse your lips and let the breath out slowly. Imagine a feather floating in front of you and you are trying to keep it up in the air. Make sure the stream of breath is soft and steady. You should be able to breathe out for at least 30 seconds, but aim for 60 seconds. You will build up resistance and breath control by doing this. Do it every day, preferably as a part of your vocal training." Q: Hi, I have been doing vocals for a few years and recently lost my ability to growl. It says on your profile you had to retrain you vocals I was wondering if you could give me some advice on vocal training as I really wish get my voice to its full potential. Angela: "If you can't growl anymore, it means you got nodules. Please go to a doctor and have your vocal cords checked. If you get diagnosed with some kind of disorder due to vocal abuse I highly recommend working with a vocal coach who is specialized in this. It's impossible to explain how to do it, I had to run through a lot of different exercises. For now, you should stop growling and screaming altogether to avoid further damage. It can become irreparable, if you continue straining your voice. I wish you all the best with your voice! Please see a professional who can check you every week and notices if you are returning to your old mistakes. The main causes for vocal damage are usually lack of controlled breathing techniques and too much pressure. Q: How do you make such growls and screams, tell me how ya do it? Angela: "I have 15 years of practice. I got thick vocal cords and good control over my false cords. And I know all the necessary breathing techniques. I went to a vocal coach for about a year. I learned breathing techniques, warm-up, pronunciation and the right way to speak without putting any strain on the cords. I also had singing lessons for about 6 months to learn training my voice in a different way and applying all the techniques to singing. "There are two sorts of singers: some breathe mostly from the lower abdomen, some use the ribcage and back-breathing more. I am the second type, although my power comes from my lower abdomen, the air I mainly hold in my widened rib cage and in my back." Q: I'd like to ask some professional advice from you about growling. You mentioned that you had damaged your voice. When I realized that I can growl, lost my speaking voice for a week. I was growling 24/7, wanted to be louder and louder. I know that this genre needs warm-up but I don't really know how can I warm up properly? What type of warm-up and exercises do you suggest? I've got another question about how to become a bandmember? The first bit of your career was quite tough and probably you know what would be a good advice for a very beginner. I really want to get in a band, I just don't know how. I want to create music and give it to other people. Angela: "There is a great DVD out; it's called 'The Zen of Screaming' from Melissa Cross. You can order it at www.melissacross.com. I have worked with her and will be teaching kids as well in the future. She is a vocal teacher, specialized in screaming and growling. Anyway, I do exactly the warm-up she has on her DVD. It is similar to what I learned from my vocal coaches at home! I do some humming, scales, yelling, screaming, growling. My warm-up is about 15 minutes long. "Breath support is the most important factor in growling. All the power has to come from the abdomen and the ribcage — no strained throat or chest breathing. Just like in 'normal' singing. "Finding a band: stick around in the scene, clubs, metal bars etc. it's easy to find out about an open singer slot when you are active in your local scene. And then audition. You got to persistent, cuz people still have a problem with females in extreme music. But if you are good, you will crush them. I found my first band in a youth center." Q: I love everything about ARCH ENEMY but i totally favor those lyrics and most definitely that scream. I wish you could teach me how to do that. I am starting to get it down along with memorizing all your awesome lyrics but I can't scream nearly as long or loud as you. I have been in choir for many years and they teach you everything but screaming [lol]. Angela: "Screaming hard is not for everybody; 'cuz vocal cords are just as individual as the person. So if you have a beautiful singing voice and screaming is hard for you, don't do it. Don't wreck your voice. I love melodic singing and do it plenty at home. I am an aspiring vocal teacher though, so our paths might cross one day." Q: I am a singer too and now I am about to go in studio and record. I would really like to know how on earth do you make that hellish sound of your voice? Can you give me some tips about how to do that, please. I know you have been learning to sing and I am asking your advice cause when I sing like that, I can't speak for days after. Angela: "If it hurts, don't do it, otherwise you will damage your vocal cords! It is an extreme form of singing and requires strong, thick vocal cords. If you are a soprano, you probably shouldn't try it at all, your cords are simply not built for it. Not being able to speak for days is NOT a good sign!" Q: I have been a great follower of your work and I have to say your vocals are clean with diction :) How do you do it???? I have a band of my own, we play death metal as well... But I seem to be facing problems in the jam room... where my two guitarists and bassist insist they have to be louder than me and my drummer, which I think should be the other way round. At times I end up straining my voice to be heard. And my vocals are sinking in the music. Would you mind sharing sum tips with me? On how to go about, in the jam room, studio and live??? Angela: "It is important you got a loud enough PA! Remember, you are the only instrumentalist in the band without build-in amplification. Straining your voice just to be heard isn't cool. If the others can't turn down, you got to turn up your gear — not your throat!" Q: I am becoming a vocalist soon. I growl and it sounds okay, but how do you train your voice when you go on tour? Angela: "I am actually working on a website right now that deals with vocal advice. This is a complex subject. You should have basic breathing techniques and singing knowledge, get a few lessons with a teacher to work on a good warm-up routine. You should train your voice daily, not only growling but singing also. Vocalist.org. This website provides a lot of good tips, exercises, etc. "Know your voice well before you start touring. If you can't handle screaming for at least one hour a day, it's not a good idea to go out on the road. You won't even last for the first week." --------------------------- DIO On Possible BLACK SABBATH Reunion: 'I Would Absolutely Say No If It Was For Nostalgia' Paul Jackson of Daily Yomiuri recently conducted an interview with legendary heavy metal vocalist Ronnie James Dio (DIO, BLACK SABBATH, RAINBOW). A few excerpts from the chat follow: On revisiting the "Holy Diver" material on a recently released live CD: "It was cool and fun to play those songs again...but to me it seems so completely retro to go back to what we did in 1983 in 2005. It'd become fashionable around that time to do an entire album [live]. DEEP PURPLE had done 'Machine Head' on one tour and QUEENSRŸCHE were doing 'Operation: Mindcrime'. This was special because 'Holy Diver' was the first introduction to the DIO band and there are great songs on that album, so we agreed to do it. "But anyone can stand on their laurels. It's only what you do tomorrow or tonight that's important...it's all about creation." On being influenced by opera as a child: "I grew up with opera around me all the time. I think you have to equate [my singing style] with my trumpet playing. I sing the way I played...I went for a full-bodied voice with a lot of range and a lot of emotion. "I got a scholarship to Juilliard in New York as a horn player, but I couldn't see myself getting stuck in an orchestra with 80 people." On the possibility of a reunion with SABBATH's Tony Iommi or RAINBOW's Ritchie Blackmore: "I would absolutely say no if it was for nostalgia. Money has never been a consideration for me...so the project would have to be forward-thinking. "I have no time for bands that reform because they couldn't get jobs as CEOs at companies or at the local porn factory or whatever." On seeing himself as a regular guy: "I never listen to the accolades. I know what I am. I've got foibles like everyone else has. I can't fix my car or deal with my computer, but I can sing and I can write some things and I've been in some great bands. The rest is all about being a human from the ground level up." On whether he acknowledges his role as the singer who brought fantasy themes to metal: "I guess I probably would take that little badge of honor. I probably have done that more than anyone else. If I can take another example, the famous two-finger horn sign I've been given credit for having invented was something I just picked up from grandmother, who was Italian and had superstitions and that was her protection against the evil eye. Because I did this one sign so many times it became identifiable with me and because I've written more fantasy attitudes and lyrics...I guess I became Mr. Fantasy, but I write a lot of other things as well." "I have a kind of medieval English home and in it, it has the accoutrements that make sense, everything from suits of armor to antlers. I must have about 50 swords, but only a couple of crossbows. That's a pretty horrible instrument of war." "I don't have a moat [around the house]; there's no drawbridge." "It's a great time to write about, but not a great time to live. It was all criminality and people fighting against each other and you didn't even have the luxury of a bullet going through your head, you had a sword stuck in you." -------------------- Justin K Broadrick will be performing with Sunn 0))) Justin K Broadrick will be performing with Sunn 0))) on their current U.K and Eire tour, here are the dates: Fri 13th Oct 06 London - Hippodrome[Frieze] Sun 15th Oct 06 Glasgow - ABC2 Mon 16th Oct 06 Belfast - Black Box Tue 17th Oct 06 Dublin - Crawdaddy Thu 19th Oct 06 Galway - Richards Bar Fri 20th Oct 06 Cork - Cypress Avenue Justin will also be performing as Final in England ; a one off headline on Nov 3rd 06 at The Cooler in Bristol, and supporting MONO [Japan] at The Corporation in Sheffield on Nov 7th 06.
