Hostel is a decent film, don't get me wrong. It just isn't sure what it wants to be. The first half of the film is an undeniable filler for the main event that we all know will follow, but it plays like a crude homage to Eurotrip-and that was pretty damn bad. The fact that, when the main characters are shown towards the hostel of horrors, the characters says that there are no men "because of the war." The fact of the matter is this; there has been so war in Slovakia in the past 15 years, although there has been one in Slovenia. That is embarrassing for Roth. When the actual main event starts and the film kicks into gear, the gore is thrown at the audience in bucket loads. Scenes with cut up ankles, yolky eyes and chainsaw sadism are all thrown in, but Eli Roth does manage to keep a thin veneer of humour over all the gore. The scene with our hero (Hernandez) and, the obviously sexually frustrated maniac, draws a few laughs, and the scene at the end with the suicide of a main character, is also meant to invite audience laughter. The fact remains, however, that the film is dragged down in the opening stages and the gore at the end just can't make up for it. A decent effort from Roth, but it just can't compete with the likes of Saw 1 and 2.
