What a horrible, nasty little film. I don't mind a bit of gore but this was just pointless. Tarantino should be ashamed to even attach his name to this!

A pitiful, revolting, sick film, which despite it's horrific gore is not scary in the slightest. A film which is so amoral, and horrifically pointless that there is nothing to recommend it. Horrifying and grubby.

How dumb were they to believe that story? was it as dumb as us paying to see it?
I went into this film expecting to be shocked and it seemed to miss its target, the location was ripe for a real heart pumping suspense, but like "the Hole" if anyone recalls how great that looked in the trailer, the movie let us all down. The Character escaping by using a gun let me down and was lazy writing by Roth, as for the Tarantino connection maybe Roth should re-watch the Ear slicing scene in "R.Dogs" to see how not seeing the Eye burst is more powerful, it didnt turn my stomach like it should have, not because im decenscitised, but because it looked really fake. I could forgive this film if it was a Debut but for a second movie i feel it lacked the drive of a filmmaker to be reconed with. Witty review though Simon Crook.

As with Cabin Fever there was such hype around Hostel being the sickest, goriest film ever and i have to say i was disappointed. I found tho with both Cabin Fever and Hostel on second watch (without all the expectation) you really get to see if the films are any good. Hostel isnt the best horror film in the last year (or 10) but it's certainly better than most just for the pure what seems to be hate for all human kind. Eli Roth has pushed the boundaries as to how far films can go, and the torture scenes are really uncomfortable to watch. Apart from the torture scenes there's not much else to talk about but it would seem Eli Roth has great taent and needs to focus on telling a good story to go with his scenes of brutalism and not just rely on the horrific stuff to carry a film

Lets face it the first half sucked we all know that but the second half is a tour de force of gore and the dark side of the human nature. After all his friends are systematically tortured and murdered in brutal ways Hernandez character makes the descent into madness and get the taste for blood. After watching this movie youll never want to touch you eyeballs again. The chick being run over by the car was another nice touch also, All in all a dark gorey movie about the sick nature that dwells within man.

I think these writers should be locked up, i started watching it while eating a sausage and egg bap, towards the end of the film, i wish i hadn't. I think it was good. I'm not going to refer my sister to watch it, but definately my friends who like audition and irreversible!

My word what a load of rubbish. as a fan of gore and horror that was a piss poor effort by a director with little or no talent. The first half as noted was rubbish, he never built anything up, created remotely interesting characters or forwarded the story in a way that would make one excited about the inevitable nastiness that was to come. yeah to the gore. if people think this is squirm inducing youve never seen decent gore. actually im gonna stop there, there is so much wrong with this film id be here all night. Roth showed absolutely no skill or originality in this film. shite. 1/5

one other thing, during the first half i thought he was making the americans purposly unlikeable gormless "yanks" as he painted other cliched stereotypes of other nations too, but i watched a bit of the extras and he seems to fit the bill perfectly himself!

This is probably one of the worst horror movie i've ever seen, even worse then cabin fever. This movie is slow and got absolutly no story backing it, even the torture scenes were terrible dull. The idea of sequal of this movie makes me want to scratch my eyes out. This was an hour and a half of my life I want back

This film isn't as bad as people make out. Your preconceptions before you see the film that will affect this, but as a fan of Cabin Fever (PANCAKES, PANCAKES), I was expecting laughs and OTT thrills. I enjoed it from begining to end.

Well I can safely say this is one of the most boring films of all time, ti has no proper story to it, it all goes really quick, I would have thought that he would have hada little more trouble escaping but he didn't, even the torture scenes were poor, the best part in the film was when he cut off the eyeball of that girl. It was one of ther most overated films ever and I wudn't recomend it to anyone.

What a let-down, I really got suckered buy the hype which I almost never ever do. This is a 90 minute prick-tease of a film. the first half is no better than 'An American Werewolf in Paris' and the second half is a sub-standard 'Saw'.

Eli Roth is a shameless self-publicist, probably the only thing for which I admire him for. 'Hostel' was a huge disappointment, it's story thin, plotting and pace workmanlike and performances are cardboard.

The long anticipated second half is a major let-down. There's is absolutely nothing suspenseful, gory or shocking to see. His camera wimps out on every promised close up, the set-pieces are dull and badly paced. It is a complete let-down

I truly feel cheated out of my £13. 'The Hills Have Eyes' remake was far superior and delivered on it's promises of tension and horror and I wish I'd bought that instead.

Obviously I'm not alone, there are quite a few dud reviews here. I rate 'Saw' above this, and it in itself was merely average.

Cannot believe this got so much hype when 'Land of the Dead' flopped. It's an infinitely better film, made by a 63 year old for God's sake!!!

dj vivace - Eli Roth hasn't pushed any boundaries at all. Putting aside the true gore masters - Romero, Gordon, Argento etc. Other mainstream movies have already been there with none of the hype - The Descent, DOTD remake, Saw, Saw 2.

Eli Roth is just a showboater with a big mouth. That he has been apprenticed by Quentin Tarantino is no small surprise.

complete and utter rubbish! what a waste of time - not a patch on Saw. I didn't squirm once. When will movie makers remember that it's tension and build up that create an effect - if i wanted cheap and tacky blood effects i would watch casualty.

My arse was this the most fucking shocking film ever. I mean half of it is basically the 2 main guys having sex with all these hot women. Its barely a horror film.

With all the hype surrounding this film i was expecting a film that would deliver from the off and continously make you gag and recoil at every turn, instead i was left watching in disbelief, where was the film that was supposed to re-invent the horror genre, personally i didnt see one, what i saw was a director who was given a budget and was left to roam free sticking as many pairs of tits and ass he could lay his hands on and then attempting to scare us.
The idea for the film was a good one, just a shame it wasnt filmed properly, the film should of been a lot darker and a more grimier than shown and the build up should of been more about the journey and the lure of this fabled 'hostel' instead of how many pair of tits you can get on screen and the lame American pie jokes.
Unfortunately this film falls way behind in the wake of decent horror films such as the Saw franchise and the new Hills have eyes remake, these arent the best but just an example of how to make you squirm at just the right moment and leave you with a bad taste in your mouth.

really dissapointing.
the 'quentin tarantino presents' tag is completely wasted on such dribble. i cannot believe they are making hostel 2
the concept is good and it probably happens in real life but it takes so long for anything to happen that you just lose interest. The yolky eye bit looks like something Sam Raimi would have done 20 years ago. The whole thing stinks, GOD nothing is scary anymore....I just wanna be scared s**tless !!

If I could do half a star i would. The only reason the piece of crapwas given some much hype is Tarantino's name attached. Eli Roth's scripts are utter shite and he should stick to making movies about fruit! Some terrible acting and everything was wrapped up in the last 10 minutes making sure nobody was foregotten, please! A bad, bad wanbe director! Did I say it was shit!

just watched it now and its a complete pile of cack. the blonde girl eith the tits could have just stood there and the caera been on her for te hour and it is GUARANTEED that the film

would be better. it was all just very very very pointless, the whole idea made no sense. roth is a stupid hack. yes, even uwe boll is better.

the idea of the victim becoming like his torturer to exact revenge is plausable, but the way in which roth went about it was pretty crap. the only good part of the film i thoroughly

felt involved was te bit where that stupid torturer whips out the chainsaw and the "hero's" feet and body just stop moving in fear and that drum beat kicked in.

but the rest was shit. even the "suggestive" horror was just plain bad, wolf creek is so much better at it. but better isnt the right word, because its equally as shit, but it still strikes a chord

and that film has stayed with me.

films like this are really shit. but in saying that im off to see saw 3 tonight, which i havent read any reviews about!!!!

Seeing as it's Halloween, I thought I'd review this. I watched it again last night and I still love it. Yes the first half is gratuitous boob footage but that's part of the genre. This film sets out to be gross and gratuitous and offensive in every way and succeeds gloriously. I've had to turn this off for people watching it in my house. Either you understand this type of movie or you don't. It's supposed to offend. The second half of the movie is seriously disgusting although for me the enduring tag line will always be "achilles" as with Saw 2 it was "bloody needles". Wonderful, unnecessary and truly filthy. Great Halloween viewing.

I was expecting so much from this, but again it proved that Eli Roth is all mouth and no trousers.

The gore was quite tame by today's standards and the violence was just gratuitous but not shocking in the slightest. Even the eye scene left me bored.

There was no tension at all, and by the end of it you just didn't care what happened or why.

Roth should stick to promoting films, not making them.

scary, scary, BLOODY SCARY. the singing ringing tree was scarier (no hang on, actually that was scarier), i mean, postman pat was scarier, with his dead eyes and his, rather sweet, yet chilling black and white cat. and what about ted glen, he was the handyman from hell, he could mend anything, it's voodoo i tell ya. postman pat the spawn of satan, though most of us now him by another name, fireman sam.

What the hell is up with this film, Eli Roth just seems to like to hype and then waste our time , dont get me wrong it was fun and twisted as promised but i was watchin the dvd of this with a friend and we just kept asking each other were we watching the wrong film for the first half hour, its just weird and drawn out, and then when to the actual horror the movies nearly over. Thats what I thought anyways. (bit with the eye is still pretty sick though).
