Tom Cruise has had only one real bomb on his name this decade; Rock of Ages. Domestically though, nearly all of his movies are underperforming. In the later years more than before.

They may be underperforming but he's still selling tickets and making quality movies, with his recent being one of the best films he's done in his entire career. Considering the amount of time he's been around now, i think it's incredible that he is still getting big projects where most of his contemporaries have faded into the background somewhat.

They wouldn't cast him in these movies if they wouldn't sell as well in foreign countries. I personally am not really a fan of Tom Cruise, but his star-power is certainly indeniable. The thing is, famous actors don't get much people into seats. Famous actors get more people in seats when the movie is able to prove itself as being good and interesting to the audience. If you would make a movie with Cruise, Jolie, Pitt and Depp; arguably some of the biggest stars in the world. It would not necessarily get huge, if the movie itself doesn't come across as interesting or accessible to the big audiences.

Chances of EoT experiencing holiday season holds are about zero. It will be lucky to get to 100m. This is summer, where getting great holds is more of the exception than the rule, instead of holiday season.

Is it fair to call this 50m of HTTYD2 a flop? I'd say yes.

My bet is 103,2m. Which is a terrible OW for this franchise.

So apparently studios are fighting over the actual outcome of T4's OW. They think Paramount is lying about reaching 100m.

A great opening weekend for GOTG. With $160m worldwide.

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=marvel2014a.htm

In less good news Transformers 4 has now passed a billion worldwide

http://boxofficemojo.com/movies/?id=transformers4.htm

Fuck's sake.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will easily top a billion dollars. It will be the biggest release of 2014.

Yeah that's a great opening for GOTG. I'm baffled as to how much the Transformers movies make when other, similar, but better movies barely register.

Mockingjay will probably not edge out T4 for the worldwide number 1 spot. Domestically it has a really big shot.

So.. Summer has ended and Guardians came out on top. Who would have expected that?
Also, who would have expected that August would 'save' the Summer?

Not me, I thought it would tank!

It does have a great re-watchability about it though, I've seen a lot of people who have been a few times.

Yeah. I really thought it would collapse under the weight of GotG. Especially after that humongous opening of 94m. I also heard that turtles is great fun.

I'd say since september we've seen a lot of (unexpected(ly big)) break-outs.

But yeah, Gone Girl has done unexpectedly great at taking out the competition.

So, how about Interstellar and Mockingjay coming up. What do you all think?
Interstellar is tracking for 70m+ on a weekend where Big Hero 6 is tracking for 60m+. Incredible.

Mockingjay at least needs to equal Catching Fire, for opening weekend, which I doubt it can make. I doubt it'll break the 400m, which is unfortunate because I would have loved to see a franchise where all movies break 400m+.
