I think the reason we have been seeing so many cities being destroyed this year is because they have almost perfected dust particles/debris with CGI. So basically they just want to destroy everything so they can show off their new special effects. I think The Avengers sparked this certain trend though.

Seriously, you guys at Empire must be really pushed for material to come up with such a none article as this. You could take these trends and pretty much apply them to any year for at least the last 20 years.

You missed out a film featuring shipping containers... they formed some pretty good improvised weaponry in Pacific Rim :)

isn't that a trend? as trends by definition imply people copying stuff - especially if it's CGI copying and pasting to save time and money.

I thought it was quite a fun look back at the last year poking fun at some enjoyable films.

the shipping container thing in IM3 is probably a riff on 'lethal 'weapon 2''s climax, written by shane black.
