I love the bit in Wall-e, with the bit from Hello Dolly.

What films use another scene from a film effectively? Not in a parody way but where a character is watching or remembering a film.

Point Break and Bad Boys in Hot Fuzz were good, serving as place-setters for the final showdown.

Just recently Prometheus had Lawrence of Arabia. I actually don't remember why though or if I felt it worked or was just out of place.

Good call. I've always loved that scene, with the tornado bearing down on the drive-in just as Jack starts hacking down the door.

In Poltergeist, during the scene where the Freelings are skinning-up on the bed the TV's showing 'A Guy Named Joe', which Spielberg re-made as 'Always' some nine years later.

And I always liked the scene from 'Interview With The Vampire' where Louis is watching 'Superman' in the cinema. Nice touch.

The Limey's use of Poor Cow to depict a young Wilson (Terence Stamp) is first class. Flipping great movie as well for all of you that haven't seen it!

OK, not a film thing as such, but FAMILY GUY does this quite a lot to often amusing results... even though it isn't nearly as funny as it used to be...

I know it's a fictional film and a long-running John Landis gag, but See You Next Wednesday in American Werewolf In London is great

Sadly it ended up on the cutting room floor, but Quint watching Moby Dick in Jaws, and laughing all the way through, is a great scene.

God i was a bit drunk when i posted this. The wording in the first post was terrible. Some great examples though. I'd completely forgotten about the Prometheus one.

Overdrawn at the Memory Bank featured Casablanca being used as a computer memory sequence which was played around with. It's been about twenty years since I saw it.

Then there's war films such as Battle of Midway that splices real war footage in with the dramatic parts, and a whole bunch of movies form the 50's that used stock footage of aircraft, space ships etc. Many films share the same stock footage.

The (original) ending of Bladerunner had footage from The Shining

Donnie Darko using Evil Dead helped set the sense of era.

And also probably the most obvious one, Shawshank using Gilda.

Also a Darabont/King... The Green Mile used Top Hat to great effect.

The Gremlins watching Snow White always cracks me up/absolutely terrifies me. Gizmo being a Clark Gable fan is nice too (I haven't seen the film he watches: it's called To Please a Lady, which is not a good title).

Well, I'm not really sure that counts as Scott just borrowed the leftover aerial footage that Kubrick hadn't used. It wasn't a deliberate homage to another film.

Jaws the Revenage uses the shot from the first Jaws where Martin Brody blow the shark up as a flashback but Ellen Brody was not even there at the time. How does she know what he said ?.

If you ask that question you may as well ask how a shark manages to swim backwards, stand on its tail, follow a plane from New England to the Bahamas and roar like Godzilla despite having no vocal cords.

Gizmo watches Rambo: First Blood part 2 in Gremlins 2 and is so inspired by John J's use of his bow and explosive arrows that he fashions a bow to go hunting the other Gremlins. What makes it even fuinnier is that Jerry Goldsmith composed the music for both Rambo 2 and Gremlins 2 and homages his Rambo themes when Gizmo goes a huntin!

Nightmare 3 dream warriors has the background sound of Critters on the Telly, probably as they're both New Line pics

Off the top of my head:

In Basic Instinct the final part of Hellraiser is on TV while Michael Douglas is asleep

In 12 Monkeys Bruce Willis and Madeleine Stowe watch Vertigo at a cinema

In Leon Jean Reno watches Singin' in the Rain in the cinema

In True Romance Slater and Arquette watch A better tomorrow II on TV
