i re-watched Alien for the first time in a decade or so last night. I could tell that it is shot, structured, and acted out in such a way as to be really bloody scary (and when i watched it as a teenager it REALLY BLOODY scared me), but last night I watched with this distant, deadened look in my eyes, like the one Michael Fassbender wears in Shame when he's shooting gentlemen's relish everywhere. that's my relationship with horror today: an perpetually unfulfilled addiction.

I love horror movies and yet they don't scare me anymore. Whether this is just an inevitable upshot of watching the same grisly scenarios unfold again and again, or a consequence of the genre's descent into torture porn gore at the expense of suggestion......

scariness seems to have slipped down the critical agenda. the success of a CONTEMPORARY HORROR FILM, these days it seems, is directly proportionate to the extent to which it departs from (or subverts) established conventions. horror has been pushed out into some meta territory, more than any other genre. i think.

is this all symptomatic of widespread horror fatigue? anybody else suffer from it?

Kneel before Zod.
