I thought this movie was brilliant. Christopher Lambert has such an enviable talent and what a voice! It was an original storyline as far as I can tell, and even though the off-shoots have been rather lacklustre, such as the TV version of it, the original will always be a favourite classic. It's a pity that the DVD version doesn't have more special features.

However, the film's score was brilliant, embracing Queen's soulful tunes so heartily that when I look back on it now, it gets my throat all clogged up. It's a particularly tortured story, I believe, since McCloud can never settle down or have many friends - they all die because they're not immortal. Connery as the old "Spanish peacock" was a little odd since he had a Scottish accent himself, but that's to be expected from the Scotsman, right?

One of the moments that really protrudes from my memory of this film is where the hooker comes in and says, "I'm Candy." and the "baddie" responds with "Of course you are..." with that scary, creepy, skin-tinglingly hoarse voice. Absolutely brilliant.

This film rips off "The Terminator". They've just replaced sci-fi (and the future) with fantasy (and the past). Mind you, "The Terminator" was a rip off too.

How insightful. Just like Football factory is a rip of Star Wars where they have replaced a galaxy far far away with modern day laaandan and the force with football. Mind you Star wars was rip of too.

 lol!

I remember watching it while at school and loved the whole thing - immortality, swords and a cracking Queen soundtrack. I still thinks it's a decent effort today

One word: classic.

Swordfights.  Sean Connery.  Clancy Brown in top scary voice mode.  Queen soundtrack.  Forget the naff sequels, this is one of the best movies of the 80's.

Great movie! A story that really drags you in and makes you think. I saw this when was about 11 years old or so;and even at that tender age it made me think. Everyone always says they'd love to live forever, but this movie tells you straight 'no you bloody wouldn't' . Spend eternity watching those you love die? Great! I don't think so! And it deserves 4 stars for fitting in the words "Toledo Salamanca" Into the script.

I like Highlander as well. I think Clancy Brown is a great villian he's scary!
I love the flashback scenes and I thought they were shot really well. My favourite is when Ramirez and McCleod are on the boat.

The reviewer is entitled to his opinion of course, but I think he's off base and possibly picked up a copy of Highlander 2: The Quickening instead.Great film, cool soundtrack with good acting from the cast especially Lambert, Brown and Connery. The premise is awesome and totally original, you're not given a lot of information on how they're immortal and the origin of the 'game' but you get enough to satisfy. The different camera shots used were fairly innovative for the time and add to the film, which is a classic!

Très bien

2 Stars, thats got to be some kind of bad joke. Right?

I mean the sequels are mostly 1 or 2 star efforts but the original is in a class of it's own.

As has been said it's a dam fine all-rounder; great cast, action, score, setting premise even pretty good directing. It's also pretty darn quotable, "There can be only one" etc...

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion, but i think in this case they probably should have kept it to themselves and retired to the dark cave they usually live in!

'By the way Ricky, I watched the Highlander movie. It was shit'

I can never see how Highlander built up such a cult following, I thought it was pretty ropey when it first came out and the years haven't been kind to it at all.

As a long term Empire reader i can remember an Empire top 100 Films pull out which featured Highlander in the top 100. Granted this was about 15 years ago, but this is still a cool movie today. Shame on Chris Hewitt not treating this film with more respect. I would love to see a remake.

If I had been reviewing this film when I first bought it on VHS, witha dodgy cartoonish cover about 15 years ago, I would have given it 5 stars no question- it had great editing, cool sword fights and even the crazy animation was funky. But now....-Connery is cool, but the script is pretty ropey, apart from the there can be only one stuff, I only revisited it after getting it free with a newspaper (good timing on the Immortal edition) and even though its not aged as well as Sean, you gotta love it!
