Does anybody remember this great series? Quite simular to Twin Peaks in a way but it was genuinely dark and disturbing. Gary Cole was excellant as the sheriff who may or may not be the devil. A shame that they only made one season but American Gothic I remember you fondly!

It has been mentioned in a few other threads - you'll see it in the top 100 and the unfairly cancelled ones, so I think there are certainly a few of us about . But, possibly like you, I'm really surprised it hasn't had its own thread up till now.

I loved this show - occasionally cheesy I was impressed at just how nasty and dark it could get - and funny, don't forget funny! I remain stunned that Joe Hardy was involved and sad that Invasion is so not great, as AG was the reason that I was so looking forward to it.

Intelligent TV before its time - like eg Profit, it might still be going if it was made now, rather than then. TV has changed and this kind of intelligent writing is appreciated more.

Although not by the production company - who still, on the UK release, can't get the bloody epis in order! I was going to replace my R1 DVD then saw the same problems in the UK

Am I correct in thinking it was cancelled due to pressure from the religous groups? rather than poor ratings?

The episodes arnt in the right order are they, i'll have to sort out that when the boxset arrives.

It's one of my favourite shows of the mid-90's...originally there were only a couple of us at college who were watching it, but by Christmas we'd converted most of the people on my course...and then it got cancelled!

I still haven't got round to getting the DVD, but that's mainly because I've still got them all taped off the telly.

I just loved it when we discovered that Sheriff Buck really was evil and it wasn't just people getting the wrong idea about him.

There were a couple of American Gothic novels that were pretty cool too. The one that gave Buck's backstory was great...

I think I've still got them somewhere. I sold the original VHS official release of the first 3 epis when I got the release date for the DVD - that got a pretty decent price so I guess there are quite a few fans out there!

In this case I don't think it was external pressure but there do seem to lots of conflicting reports on it - it seemed more the network who didn't really know how to deal with a show this dark. I think the also expected higher viewing figures and didn't give it a chance. With so many different aspects - horror not being the least of it - it was a problem. To be honest, I think, a bit like Serenity (obviously with the Paulson connection it comes to mind!) - was it a western? It was funny - do you market it as SF? Action?

Shows like AG have the same problem.

Great show, I remember watchign it religiously years ago. I was under the impression they did way more than one season though! Must have just been spread out byt the TV schedulers when I watched it!

I'll have to check this box set out, see if the show still lives up to its name. Weren't they planning a movie on this?

Really loved this show but ended up missing huge chunks of it due to it being on at a ridiculous time of night.
Adored the kid who played Caleb. Got a shock when I saw him in Jarhead recently all grown up.

Is it as good as I remember? If so, may invest in the box set.

Sounds great and there was a review of it in the new Total Film that was very positive.

I've still got a couple of episodes on VHS somewhere. I loved this show and it was always nice to see what sheriff Buck was going to do week to wee as sometimes he was the charecter you were rooting for and others he was  villian. It was a show that challenged your expectations

Possibly my favourite TV show ever. I just love it and was so excited when they released it on dvd. Although none of the episodes are in the correct order so lots of disc swapping going on. The show was cancelled because of all the god fearing yanks who complained about the demonic and satanic undertones of the show. There was never any question regarding the quality of the show. Gary Cole was awesome as the sheriff, Lucas Black just awesome as Caleb and the stories were just so original and wierd. As you can tell by my username and av I'm a big fan.
Plus Sam Raimi was executive producer and one of the episodes is very "Evil Dead" in tone and was actually shot in the same woods as the movie.

I'm so upset that they never made a second series  but apparently they're making a movie with most original cast members coming back, apart form Lucas Black who is now too old to play Caleb. Shame.

I got that boxset a while ago and watched it over Christmas. I love it! Buck has to be one of the greatest TV characters ever. Such an unrepentant evil bastard.

Yes but strangely charming and humourous.

I just think he's awesome. Definitely my fave tv show character ever.

Picked up the box set a few weeks back - any chance of someone posting the correct viewing order, as I have very fond memories of this show (strangely enough, didn't know anyone else at the time that liked it) and when I sit down to watch it soon, want to ensure its in the right order.  Please help!!

Can you imagine how ticked anyone renting it is going to be? With Potato Boy and Ring of Fire particularly.

Indeed - it wasn't shown over here properly first time round. And I am pretty sure ITV4 has been screwing about with the Millennium epi order so it doesn't bode great.
