Hello. I'm brand new here so please cut me some slack if I'm doing this wrong.

I have the lads round my bit every week to watch old school badass movies. The last few weeks it's been the Maniac Cop series (favorites of mine), before that we've had Stepfather, Cobra, Evil Dead, Shocker. I've kinda ran outta ideas for the future though, anyone got any recommendations? I'm kinda into low budget 80's stuff that will surprise you. Horrors and such, but nothing too close to the bone. Any ideas would be appreciated. Cheers lads.

Hell yeah, thanks mush. Never seen it myself, you'd recommend? Any others? I was only born in '90 so don't have a great knowledge.

If you've already seen The Evil Dead then you really must get round to watching Evil Dead 2. A better film in any genre you are unlikely to see. It does feature the greatest scene of self-mutilation ever filmed, which just so happens to be the funniest scene of self-mutilation ever as well! Other eighties classics - The Thing (not exactly low budget horror, but different class horror), Big Trouble in Little China (because they don't make characters like Jack Burton any more) and Tremors (because it's better than watching Kevin Bacon in one of those EE adverts). If you want to push the boat out and try something non-horror The Princess Bride may surprise you, Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure should tickle you and Glory will astound you.

Well the 80s was well known for slasher films. The Friday the 13th series, Halloween etc.
Re-Animator is one of my favourites. And you can't go wrong with a bit of Cronenberg, you could try Scanners, one of his best before he got bigger budgets.

Sorry to be pedantic but that was released in 1994. Great film, though, I would recommend it.

And that's just the 'R's. Then there's:

Thief - Nicholas Winding-Refn's favourite film. Apart from The Driver, obviously.
After Hours - Scorsese's neglected gem.
The King of Comedy - More terrifying than Taxi Driver, this film anticipated the madness of modern fandom. Compulsory viewing for online fanboys everywhere. And a warning. Scorsese's best film.
Into The Night - John Landis' best film? Certainly David Bowie's best screen performance. And Michelle Pfieffer's never looked lovelier.
Caddyshack - my favourite pick-me-up. If I need cheering up, this is what I reach for - be the ball!
Ghostbusters - still hilarious, one of the best New York movies, and remarkably un-dated.
Tootsie - more dated, but still hilarious: "WHO GIVES A SHIT!?!"
Time Bandits - watch Doctor Who and tell me this isn't Steven Moffat's favourite film
Brazil - 'nuff said. If you haven't seen this, what are you waiting for?
Tron - Way, way ahead of its time.
John Carpenter's The Thing - also ahead of its time. Between this, Tron, Blade Runner and Star Trek II, 1982 was a helluva year for genre fans.
Blood Simple - The Coens' first movie. A bleak gem.
Manhunter - still THE definitive Hannibal Lecter (or 'Lecktor') movie
Road House - THE campest film of all time
Predator - THE second-campest film of all time (get a room, guys)

Oh, and in its wildest, big, butch, homoerotic wet-dreams, Commando is the film The Expendables wishes it was. If you programmed a computer to come up with the ultimate 80s action movie, Commando would be the result. Another camp classic. And intentionally so - for a big, dumb action movie, Commando's a lot slyer and smarter than it looks.

I LOVE Monster Squad - "Wolfman's got nards!" And that Mummy gag's a pisser.

(Night of the Creeps is good too. Love my 80s LA sci-fi flicks an' all- Terminator, Trancers, Night of the Comet.)

Razorback
Q - The Winged Serpent

I was just going to say Basket Case! And The Keep is top of my "Holy Grail" list - when's that going to get the long-overdue Director's Cut DVD treatment with all the requisite bells and whistles? Michael Mann's "lost" movie, it's another forgotten gem.

I was always scared of Pin Head. Freddy was scary too. There was also that one where that guy's granddad came back from the dead and they rode around in a Ferrari. I can't remember the name of it.

Whilst I was setting up my Digibox for 'Basket Case', I noticed that Dario Argento's 1980 masterpiece 'Inferno' is showing directly after!  Not as good as 'Susperia' but way better than 'Mother Of Tears'...

UK posters, get on Film4 tonight!
