OK I don't know how many of these there are but I was moved to start this by the back cover splash for R.I.P.D. Rest In Peace Department.

This title doesn't make sense. I think R.I.P.D. alone would just about work. We can connect it to L.A.P.D. or N.Y.P.D while at the same time connecting the R.I.P. to being dead. I get it, we all fucking get it.

But to then spell it out is nonsensical. Now the film is called Rest In Peace Department, which sounds like service group within a funeral home. the key word missing being Police.

So are there any other films whose titles when you really think about it make no sense at all? Is this even worth worrying about?

I don't know but I am glad I got this off my chest.

A Good Day to Die Hard.

Even Bruce Willis thought that was a shit title. Suits the film though I suppose...

I've only watched it once on DVD so may have missed something, but Knight and Day never made any sense - as far as I could tell, neither of the lead characters were called either Knight or Day. This started bugging me again about half an hour ago when I read the new issue of Empire's "Roy" quiz where they state (spoiler if you're that bothered...) The Cruiser's Roy Miller's real name is actually Matthew Knight.

I realised I never noticed that at all so the fact it was either so easy to miss, or not even mentioned in the film, suggests the title was a bit shit.

It' s a pretty terrible film all round. I just assumed I think that his character was called Knight but to be honest I was only half watching it. Actually thinking about it i think I assumed it was something to do with him being a Knight in Shining Armour. Fuck knows... I think your point has been well made.

I begrudgingly decided it was down to him acting like a knight in shining armour but I knew that wasn't the actual reason.

The film itself wasn't as shit as I expected - it was enjoyable in parts - but that fucking title...

Here's one Good Will Hunting!!!

Terrible title, is it a play on "Searching for some goodwill"?

I mean his name is Will Hunting isn't it? Is it a minor Laudatory statement or a judgment of his character.

It's always pissed me off and I genuinely really like the film.

I did a blog post on this the other day but mostly on films like Abbott and Costello Go To Mars which makes no real sense in the context of the film.

Because they actually go to Venus.......

Clash of the Titans (remake). Didn't see many Titans, the Olympian gods were the focus of the film.

Back to the Future makes sense, it is even said in the film. 1955 Doc tells Marty he is sending him back to the future. It is the future to 1955 Doc Brown, so it makes perfect sense.

I'll wholeheartedly agree with this. Good Will Hunting is alright until you realise that that's the characters name, then it sounds stupid.

In a case of translators renaming a film for no reason, Pan's Labyrinth (the original title is translated as Faun's Labyrinth... the Faun is not called Pan).
However, whether it's called Tom Yum Goong (basically, spicy noodles), Warrior King or The Protector, that Tony Jaa film's title makes no sense whatsoever (though my wife is planning on adapting it into a children's book titled Where's My Elephant?, which I feel would have been the perfect title from the start).

I wonder if she will keep the scene with all the legbreaking...

She could follow it up with "Where's my brother?" - an adaptation of The Raid...

Haven't seen the fillm but titles like Welcome to the Punch and Here Comes The Boom, film titles that end in an apparently nonsensical word. I'm sure these are described in the film, of course.

I reckon I could have a go at these.

Suck My Kick
Say Hello To The Thump
Excuse Me, Mrs Trotter, Could You Hold My Bang?

I'd also like to nominate Lucky Number Slevin.

Head. I was disappointed to discover it was a psychedelic film starring The Monkees.

Much as I like it, SHAUN OF THE DEAD makes no sense... Shaun is never, at any point, one of the dead...  it's just a crap pun.

I don't know about Here Comes The Boom, but in Welcome To The Punch, The Punch is a location which plays a fairly big role in the plot.

The Amazing Spiderman.

Surely the more appropriate title would have been The Amazingly Poor Spiderman Reboot.

Whilst the title may make sense in this respect, I still think that it's an awful title. I almost didn't go and see it based purely on the fact that it sounded like a simply terrible action film. I thought the film was actually pretty decent, and if reviews hadn't recommended it I would definitely have avoided it based on that title.

Oh, I completely agree. It's a bad title, even knowing the concept. Especially since you don't find out what The Punch is until quite late into the film. I really enjoyed the film, but I only went to see it because my friend wanted to and there was nothing else on. The title certainly didn't attract me.

I'd look it up, but the film looks so uninspiring, I really can't be arsed...

Which is fair enough, if you're going to white wash the book there's no need to keep the title. Sounds like a Star Trek episode though.

Here Comes The Boom is the name of the entrance song used in the film. Now I have no idea if they used Nellys song because they'd titled the movie already or titled the movie after they chose the song. Either way it's pretty fitting once you've watched the film.

The Lone Ranger.

This guy and Tonto are a double act right? so he can hardly be the lone ranger.
