Zachary Quinto was speaking at the Galway film festival in Ireland at the weekend and said that the next Trek could be filming by next year.

http://www.scifinow.co.uk/top-tens/46867/star-trek-3-5-things-fans-want-to-see-changed/

the klingons may make war on the federation in this sequel but i trust this enterprise crew to help end it in peace as the prime kirk and co would do.

Rise of the Apes (sounds much better without the planet in there ) was a real surprise. Excellent film! So this could be great if true… better than JJ’s ones even…

And oh if only Affleck had directed MoS

Hopefully no JJ will also mean no involvement from Orci, Kurtzman and Lindelof?

Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere in another thread, but it seemed pretty apposite to share it here (especially coming off the back of BelfastBoy's post above, which I wholeheartedly agree with):

Aother thread asked if Star Trek was in limbo. My response...

Limbo sounds like a good name for a Star trek movie. Totally spitballing ideas here, but anyway...

Three years into their five year mission, the Enterprise crew discover mild off readings in all equipment and start to investigate. This gives time for 'where relationships are at' type stuff and to build a sense of creeping unease.
Each of the crew starts to have their individual recurring nightmare of their worst moment during the first three years of the mission (this allows cameo style appearances of many baddies and fan service, etc).

The investigation of off readings leads to the discovery that the ship has not moved one inch forwards for several months. Nothing they have encontered during that time is the real thing.

Some power, force or being has held the ship in place, hacked the ship so that instruments give the impression of movement so that the psyches of all the characters can be prodded towards their darkest moments which creates vibrations on a molecular level that sustain the creature or power that has held the enterprise and as it turns out many other ships in a kind of artificially generated limbo. They must seek to prod their own psyches to their lighter moments and/or process pain they hold close to their hearts if they are ever to stand a chance of escaping this limbo...

This provides a relatively old school series style central concept while allowing lots of st related stuff to feature as the dreams and fears of characters to ensure the physical/metaphysical main plot foe and working out how to find/identify/fight it plot stuff gets regular colouring in so it is not too dry. Or (as I tend to say on here) sum shit like dat).

Big conceptual main plot plus something for each main crew member to experience and deal with that threatens their ability to function as a crew. Cocky Kirk has to lead the way by exposing and facing his own worst fears while Spock makes things complicated by having trouble with doing this because his fears are not supposed to enter into his thinking any more than any other primal emotion. Such a story allows the characters to feel truly afraid, because it is easy to fight an exterior foe than your own demons...

In that case they'd better go with my idea; Captain Kirk finds himself in 1980's Los Angeles with - what the deuce?? - Captain Kirk! (William Shatner).

Now both Kirk the Younger and Kirk the Older must join forces to take down... a Giant Saxophone!

Empire also review movies (as is their job) but it doesn't stop others voicing their opinions.

I agree - as I've mentioned before, the latest film seemed very fan-fiction to me. Hopefully a new writer will make the next film its own thing and not re-hashing canon.

writers update-

http://www.trektoday.com/content/2014/07/new-trek-writers-are-also-fans/

'Although a villain often makes a good movie, it’s the characters and the relationship between them that counts the most.
“You know, people always talk up ‘Wrath of Khan! Wrath of Khan!’ – and while I love Star Trek II, and I’ve seen it so many times, I also really love Star Trek III and Star Trek IV,” said McKay.
“Those are movies that have a little bit more of the character relationships and the humor and some more of the speculative sci-fi elements. And sure, there are certainly a lot of problems you can point to in The Motion Picture, but I love that movie too.
I think it’s a cool movie, and it’s totally Star Trek.'
