The only author whose works I always bought the day they came out. Totally gutted about this news.

Unbelievably sad news. Iain (M) Banks was the author I turned to when I decided it was time to grow up & start reading decent sci-fi rather than the wishy-washy fantasy novels that were my staple at the tinme. My first was Consider Phlebas, my favourite the Player of Games. His novels were intelligent, articulate, sometimes baffling but never condescending and always wildly entertaining. And unless someone can do them proper justice (a very tall order) then perhaps they should stay as novels only. I shall definitely be sinking a wee dram or 2 in his memory tonight...
