For me it was either "The Fly" (Cronenberg's) or "Alien". I still think both of them are great movies.

I know Basic Instinct was the first 18 film I managed to sneak into the cinema to see when I was under age (I think I was 16 or 17 at the time)
As for on VHS my parents used to rent me horror and sci-fi if they left me to babysit my brothers and it would probably have been Hardware or The Terminator that I watched first.
However, I do have a vague recollection of watching Nightmare On Elm Street 5 when I went on a German Exchange Trip probably around the age of 14....it lost some of its appeal when it was dubbed into a language I could barely speak

Nightmare on Elm Street, when I was about 11. This was not a good idea as I found out when that night I dreamed Freddie was at the bottom of my bed.

like a few people on the forum, I think it was Robocop. Or could have been Die Hard. Not sure which but I know I was about 10 or 11 and there was no way I was 'allowed' to watch them, but at my mates house.......who was to know???

I can't remember what my first 18 at the cinema was. I was and still am something of a short-arse so it was probably something that came out when I was actually old enough to get in.

However the first 18 film I can remember watching from beginning to end was the original Fright Night. My brothers were watching it and I asked what it was. They said Fright Night but I misheard White Knight (which sounded pretty cool) Fright Night's not exactly scary but by the time I'd realised it wasn't what I thought I was too involved. I would have been about 6 at the time.

At the cinema I think it was a Hellraiser double bill for the release of Hellraiser II when I was 16, and they let me in even though they knew my age because I worked at the cinema as a part time usherette. A very cool night, all the seats were full and people were sitting in the aisles on the stairs etc, and the cinema (which was non-smoking in 88) was full of smoke from hundreds of joints.

Couldn't say what was my first 18 at home, went through a bit of a splatter phase when I was in my early teens, so dunno, Evil Dead, Basket Case, Re-Animator, Day Of The Dead, The Shining, A Clockwork Orange... The list goes on and on.

Reminds me, last month I went to see the kids in a stage performance at what used to be an old indie cinema.
"I've not been in here since I came to see Cheech and Chong's Up In Smoke" I said to the kids, forgetting completely that a quick IMDB search and they said "Dadddddddd! That's about drugs!"
What I didn't tell them was the cinema was basically one giant bong. Even the projectionist was battered
Ahhhhh, smoking in the cinema, the good old days

What was everyone's first 18 rated film? I remember mine being Face/Off when I was 12.

I know some people started younger and I envy them a bit, but I guess there is a first time for everyone.

I'm pretty sure mine was Face/Off, too, funnily enough, although I was about 15.

As for 18-rated videos, no idea. My mum was relatively lax when it came to ratings; she never let me watch slasher movies (eg Nightmare on Elm Street), but I do remember seeing American Werewolf when I was very young, and I'd often see things like Terminator or RoboCop with my older cousins.

Die Hard was an 18 right? If so then that on video in 1989 when I was 10. Robocop, Aliens and one of the Elm Streets (think it was 5, there was a scene where a girl gets turned into a beetle and gets squished?) followed soon after.

Either Halloween II or A Nightmare on Elmstreet. Blood fountain bedroom scene and that woman's face in the boiling water... probably not the best idea ha ha

I think I saw Lethal Weapon when I was about 11 (my memory's a little fuzzy, especially with me not being 11 for over 20 years now)

I think I saw Aliens before that (again with the fuzzyness). I do remember it being a mix of awesome and terrifying though.

I definately remember sneakily watching Friday the 13th early one morning when I was 11 though. It scared the carp out of me! Kevin Bacon's death scene caused me to sleep on my side for years afterwards (I guess it didn't help that at that time I slept on a cabin bed aswell)

Sadly 'Jackass', as my younger self was vastly uncultured. What a waste of a first.

Luckily in the cinema, it was 'Django Unchained'. Well worth the 'Mission Impossible' styled planning beforehand with a couple of friends. It goes without saying that it was a brilliant introduction into the fabled (when you were younger) world of mature cinema*.

*No laughing at the back
