We don't get a lot of films where giant lobsters rape people to death and Satanic Knights Templars, we don't get much of those anymore, so the older ones are clearly better.

Back in the day, oh that was the big thing, you remember those? They don't make them like that any more. Those effects were amazing at the time! Sometimes it seems like they'll be making a comeback, but it's just disappointing in the end. You'd be all like remember that film? You know that part with the thing? And those guys used to be such big stars, whatever happened? Oh yeah it was the greatest, let's go see the re-prequel. But it's always the same, and you're left sad and lonely with just the memory of the way things used to be. It'll never be like that again. You're dead inside. Like Hollywood.

There were probably just as many bad films being made at any given point in the past as there are now. The rubbish gets forgotten and all that remains in the memory are good old films, good new films, and bad new films, creating the illusion that things are getting worse.

The same effect causes people to claim that there's less good music being made now than in the good old days.

The one caveat I'll add is that as time goes by there are probably less influential films being made. While influential can be described as good it may be wrong to assume that influential means quality. As long as the number of new and influential films never drops to zero, the number of films motivating filmmakers will increase, so a drop in the rate at which the number of influential films increases, shouldn't have an adverse affect on quality.

Perhaps you'd like to expand with examples of why you stand where you do on it?

I hate it when people say "They don't make 'em like they used to." Sure, in some cases it's justified but when said in a general way, it really pisses me off, because it's a big "fuck you" to the great work being done by new filmmakers (PTA, Fincher, Alfredson) or the old masters (Spielberg, Scorsese etc). I'm sure the past will seem golden to most, but open your bloody eyes!

I don't mean to rant, it's just something that's been irritating me for a while.

I just gave you my honest opinion.

However there's one aspect of my argument that I didn't emphasize properly. I am not simply talking about the effect of aging on a person's memories of films from their own lifetime. It also applies to a person's opinion of films made before they were born. I am aware of more movies that are considered to be classics from before I was born than movies that are not considered to be classics, despite the likelihood that the latter outnumber the former, because the classics are the films that society tends to remember and inform future generations of. That's why they're called classics.

I don't have a real prefererence to be honest. I like seeinig old movies as well as new movies. But I do miss this kind of mysterious atmosphere you had in certain older movies (pretty hard to explain), a lot of Spielberg movies had it but there are more. (e.g E.T. , Jurassic park,..)

Plenty of modern movies are crap and plenty are great.

Plenty of old movies are crap and plenty are great.

To sum up, plenty of movies are crap and plenty are great. Why do we have to take sides?
