I just watched ten trailers on the tube, and six of them had the HONNNNNK!!!!! HOONNNNNKKK!!!! all the way through.

Time to line the streets in protest? I know this has been oft-discussed, but I just need to vent. I mean C'mon.

Are we talking about that thing that showed up in the INCEPTION trailer?

Personally, I think it's not so much a HONK as a BAAARRRRP!

I hate it! It's usually reserved for sci-fi and action films and it's rubbish! HOONNKK 'the White House is under attack' HOONNKK 'all Federal agencies are helpless against the enemy' HOOONNNNK 'except for one man' HOOONNK (some times followed by dubstep!).

The World War Z trailer use of the 'honks' is a bit obvious as well. I remember the initial gameplay trailer for Hitman Absolution also featured them!

Now, that would be a worthy protest indeed. But it doesn't annoy me as much as whispering. That Evil Dead trailer drove me nuts!

I do get my BAAAARRRRPs and my BURRRRRRRRRMs mixed up... a subtle yet important distinction.

I think that's supposed to be annoying and uncomfortable, to get under your skin.

That is almost as annoying as short clips of film fading from/to black to the sound of a beating heart...

It's clearly a DURN noise.

Honestly, people.

Fair enough. The later Harry Potter movies then. Pretty much the only time someone's not whispering is "NYEAAAAHHH!!!"

Define 'honking'.

Or accept the power of the BAAARRRPPPP.

This thread is great.

It has become the rather lazy go-to noise for 'Threat! Suspense! Peril!', hasn't it?

I'd say it was more BURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRM.

Whispering is annoying too (especially when amplified at the cinema), but then I s'pose so is gravelly-voice-man...

So, in conclusion: all trailers should be acted out in silence by glove-puppets.

Edit: Hood_Man beat me to the noise description; I concur with his analysis.

I also find the stuttering image/music being overused. I'd described it as someone turning off a helicopter...
