Forget the 40 years of Bond, it doesn't matter, this film didn't need to be yet another revisit to the old ones no matter how good we kid ourselves into thinking they are. Plain and simple, this is a great action movie, with the sweet addition of having James Bond as the main character. Tamahori really has brought Bond into the 21st century despite many people's orthodox thinking and snarling remarks. Ok, so there's an invisible car, fair enough, but this is a spectacular film and just confirms that Brosnan was the best James Bond. The girls, gadgets and action are all still there but now with added coolness.

Can't be sure I saw the same film I'm afraid.

Terrible SFX, awful villian, a twist you could see from a million miles away, Halle (overrated) Berry overacting again.

Whilst I agree Brosnan was a great Bond, Goldeneye aside, the films he was in were not great.

Bring on Daniel Craig !

i am a big fan of the James Bond franchise and do love all the films (even Never Say Never Again and the Casino Royale spoof) and i had followed this Bond film through every stage from when it was first announced. i even remember an article in a red top newspaper stating that Sean Connery would be cast as James Bonds father? (even though Bonds father is clearly dead) i was glad Pierce was back as he is the Bond of my generation, but was slightly concerned about his age (no offence Pierce if your reading this, you did a good job and i know you if you'd have done a fourth you would have done brilliant.) gradually as i looked at the cast and the story i knew it wouldn't be another Goldeneye (if you read my review on Goldeneye, you'll understand how much i love it) anyway i put my assumptions aside and waited until i had seen it myself. and...it was average, but the CGI pissed me off. as i was sitting in the cinema i was actually embarrassed at the fact they used CGI and made Bond look so fake. overall its a good film, but quite franly the new Casino Royale doesn't really have much to live up to.

Its a terrible shame that this will be Brosnan's last Bond. Bit of a damp note to go out on. He does his best in a distincly below par episode of the franchise, and manages to elevate it to being vaguely entertaining. Emphasis on the vague however. A laughable and immensly irritating villain and some of the most embarrassing CGI scenes ever to grace our screens really don't help, but the fault really lies in poor storytelling and dialogue. Implausibility has always been a factor in Bond films, but when 007 saves Halle Berry from a melting ice pallace in an invisible car you can't help but think they went too far. It has its moments, the beginning sequence is great, as ever, but as a whole it all seems a bit shoddy. Shame really, Brosnan deserved better.

The Brosnan era has not been great to be honest. Goldeneye was a great film, but Tomorrow Never Dies was terrible. The World is Not Enough was average, and this film is way below average. Where to begin on this awful film? How about the cast? Halle Berry. Big mistake. She acts terribly throughout the film, starting from the lame Doctor No reference when she enters. Pierce Brosnan is too smug. It isn't really Toby Stephens' fault his character was so bad, mainly the writers, and Lee Tamahori. Rosamund Pike is the only good main character in this, really. Judi Dench and John Cleese however are on fine form. The story, like Bond's stupid car, is invisible. The film actually started off looking like a good revenge thriller, but it quickly turned into a terrible 'Action heroe must save the day from an evil space laser that will blow up things' plot. The action isn't great either. Also, the film is scattered with cringeworthy 40th anniversary Bond film references. In fact the whole film seems like a spoof of past Bond films. If Ian Fleming was alive, he'd be shocked. Another film like this would kill the franchise. Happily, Casino Royale looks like it will be the exact opposite of this rubbish.

This film for Bond is what Phantom Menace is to Star Wars.

The Empire reviews of Bond films, quite frankly, suck balls. I can't believe Licence to Kill and for your eyes only (among other Bonds) came worse of than this-in my opinion the one bond film nearly as unfathomably shite as Moonraker. When the Moore films went downhill they became like Steven Segal-stupidf and unmemorable but at least slightly entertaining. However with Die Another day we see the franchiose sink into a brand new low- a boring americanised action film stereotype. Almost a xXx wannabe, this film is not, as you claim, redeemed by he overrated Pierce Brosnan (yes he's a good Bond but please stop kissing his arse.) I never thought I'd say this but the Total Film reviews of the Bond films are far superior tothe Empire ones. But oddly enough the views represented by the reviewers who took part in the Bondathon in issue 210 are bang on.

Everybody seems to really hate this addition to the long running franchise. Me, being a huge fan, think its really good. Some people say its not the film that should be remembered as the 20th one on Bond's 40th Anniversary but I think it's a laugh. Pierce Brosnan is very comfortable with the role now, maybe showing a bit more of a Moore side in this film. Any film with Halle Berry in can't be bad, she plays wonderful homage to Ursala Andresse's Honey Rider. The film in itself is a homage to the previous films. One thing though that I think was a mistake was bringing in CGI with the stunts. Bond has always been done by proper stunt men doing proper stunts not with sticking the actor against blue screen and then a bloke doing things on a computer. Toby Stephens makes a great villian, but the plot thing about him having his face reformed is over the top. The title song is a good song, but i'm just not sure weather it's a Bond song. Other wise I think this film is good, not Brosnan's best, but a worthy addition too the series.

There were three things wrong with this film, 1st. the CGI, i can understand vehicles and such like in TWINE, but when you start creating a CGI Bond, thats the point where it crosses over to a joke. 2nd. Halle Berry, if you're a big star and you're in a Bond film, don't try and make the film yours, Jinx was a terrible character and Halle Berry's performance is just annoying. 3rd. never under any circumstances allow Madonna to be in a Bond film, the queen of crappy acting not only screwed up the theme song, but she just had to get her face in there somewhere and piss me off.
After this film it was definately time to aim in a different direction, yet i was happy for Brosnan to continue. Still Casino Royale has restored by faith that Bond could kick anyones arse, he could totally rip the sh*t out of Jason Bourne and Jack Bauer and anyone else America comes up with.

What the hell was wrong with CGI, yes being a Bond Fan since birth, I too thought it was strange to use CGI, but it wasn't that bad, if you want to see bad CGI then see along came a spider. Also bare in mind this was Pierce Brosnan's last Bond movie, who was in my opinion the second best Bond, Sean Connery obvisously has the top spot, no one can take that from him.

I think this one was average, I'd never hate it though due to the addition of Miranda Frost, she was great. However you know there is an issue when the cat fight between her and Jinx is more exciteing than Bond faceing off against Greives.

I'll forgive the reviewer as perhaps at the time of release we were all caught up in a cloud of nostalgia, but upon viewing this film again recently, I believe it is one of the worst ever Bond films! By this point the series drastically needed a new direction. Up step Mr Craig. And boy was he welcome!

The fault does not lie with Brosnon or Berry but with the way Over The Top plotting, which verges on ludicrous (a satellite sun beam and all controlling suit? eh?). As well as this there is literally no memorable villain in the film, as both are completely forgettable. Also there is an over-relience on CGI effects, especcially in the silly and unrealistic looking parachute surfing scene. But worst of all MADDONNA IS IN IT- THE HORROR, THE HORROR, it isn't bad enough that she has produced one of the worst bond songs ever but she also has to have an uncomfortably corny cameo role, luckily she doesn't stick around long. On a good note the sttings are wonderful, especially the ice hotel, and set the canvas for some predictably brilliant fight sequences. Also Berry is a suitable bond girl and Brosnon is as good as usual, and the gadgets are as unique as ever. So in conclusion Die Another Day is not all bad but for the 20th bond film you would have expected much better than this average action fare.

After watching this i had to check i saw the right film because what i watched was a 2 hour halle berry film. this is a poor send off for brosnan after 3 entertaining films, the ice mansions and invisible cars are terrible as is the villain and madonnas 'song' qualifies as the series worse along with her unnecessary cameo, the opening sequence is also a series low point. Roger moore put is best by saying "it went to far - and thats coming from the first bond in space".

To be honest, even after rewatching it after Casino Royale, its not half bad. Its great fun, the cast are decent enough and most of the set peices are brilliant, bar the big laser chasing the jet car followed by surfing a big CG wave. And to be honest the car chase was class. Maybe its just me, I dunno.

Somewhat disappointing end to Brosnan era - 28/10/2012 5:16:20 AM

Of his four appearances as James Bond since taking over from the under-rated Timothy Dalton, this may be Pierce Brosnan's most disappointing.

It's not his fault that terrible CGI (more suited to a made-for-TV) movie gives Die Another Day more of a cartoonish look than even the worst of the Roger Moore set. However, Brosnan ends up looking almost equaly silly and embarrassed by it, and I'll bet that - handsome pay cheques aside - he was happy to be shot of the 007 role after this.

There are some nice touches to a story which is frankly something of a mess. Die Another Day pays tribute to other Bnd movies, most notably with Halle Berry evoking the scene of Ursula Andress emerging bikini-clad from the Caribbean in D.No. The ever platonic relationship between Monepenny and Bond takes on a new twist, although Samantha Bond - surely the best Moneypenny ever - is virtually wasted in this film. The Aston Martin which can turn invisible on demand but fails to do so at a crucial moment is absurd, but fun. And John Cleese makes a great Q, even if the late Deson Llewellyn will always be the definitive Q. The fencfing duel in a gentlemans' club is probably the film's best moment, though.

However, ll things considered, Die Another Day turns into almost a parody of a James Bond movie, and the title song (sung by Madonna, who shows just enough acting talent to get away with her cameo appearance in the film) is disjointed and jittery. Even Academy Award winner Berry can't save this from becoming one of the weaker entries in the Bond cannon, but with the benefit of hindsight we know now that the franchise would subsequently take a refreshing and sharp turn for the better with the arrival of the Daniel Craig era,
