With the passing of Baroness Thatcher i was wondering what films define that period in the UK and elsewhere for example

My Beautiful Laundrette pefectly captures the clash between traditional values and her views on the enterprise culture.

I would say the Long Good Friday also encapsulates what was to come as Harold Shand dreams of a new Docklands .

from the US i would say Top Gun and Wall Street are perfect examples of the capitalist dreams and bashing of communism which she dearly loved .

On the other had Ken Loach attcked the Goverments policy on Northen Island with his Film Hidden Agenda and of course Brassed Off ,Billy Elliot and others were critical of that period .
So what other films can we say defined that period?

You could basically run through Loach - miners, railworkers. His work focussed on the ignored underclass and the fracturing of community.

I read with interest that they took a vote last night about one of the songs in the Billy Elliott musical.

Its kind of a forgotten film (deservedly so) but there was a British film called 'Dealers' in about 1989 that utterly summed up the smug arrogant attitudes of the yuppies... even at the time, it looked so tacky and shallow.

I have seen Dealers and as you say its pretty poor.

Defense of the Realm on the other hand is an outstanding poiltical thriller which captures the mood of the time and the writer of that film Martin Stellman went onto direct For Queen and Country a little seen thriller with a fine central performance from Denzil Washington as a returning Falklands vetran.

Also two Alan Clarke films The Firm and Elephant deal with the dark heart of Thatchers dreams.

As well as Naked I'd suggest Mike Leigh's "High Hopes" as defining the period too.

Pretty much anything form the period by Alan Clarke, Rita, Sue and Bob too being the one everyone forgets.

As for films set in the era but made since then you've got to go with Shane Meadows "This is England"

I wouldn't say 'massive' - it came out when John Major was PM
In terms of depicting - to paraphrase the Manics - the boredom, alienation and despair of growing up during that era, I'd go for Meantime.
Mind, putting aside cinema for a second, I don't think anything else captured the heartbreaking human cost of her devastating policies as perfectly as The Boys From The Black Stuff.

"Gis a job!"

Very true it was very much demonstrating the destructive and callous nature of the policies.

Good shout on the Alan Clarke films.

Here's my suggestion.

A much forgotten film, Richard Eyre's "The Ploughman's Lunch", is one of the defining Thatcher era pictures, set in the early days of the Falkland's War.

Very hard to get hold of now, I remember being shown it as part of my Theory class when I was at Film School, and it really stuck with me. Written by Ian McEwan, It starred Jonathan Pryce, who, at the time, I believe was also about to star in Gilliam's "Brazil", another film that could be looked at, in a way, as a product of Thatcher era politics.

If anyone knows if "The Ploughman's Lunch" is available on DVD, I would be grateful for a heads up. It really is a wonderful piece of work.
