That's one of the more poignant obituaries I've read yet on the great - no greatEST - film critic Roger Ebert. I understand over at Empire towers this news is met with as much sadness as it is where I am.

I am an aspiring film critic and, although I am only 14 years old, I find Ebert to be one of the reasons that I am trying to watch films and understand them and analyse them and see them as more than just entertainment. He was, in the words of Empire and anyone who can say they love film, a legendary man. I hope his legacy goes on and people continue to do what he did but, as we all know, we can never even get close to what he has achieved. Not even close.

I first came across the work of Roger Ebert before the internet on Microsoft's Cinemania CD-Roms (anyone remember them?). He was a great film critic who, even if he hated a film, always gave an impassioned, logical review. Even though he is gone, we still have that treasure trove of film reviews he wrote for future generations to enjoy. He was the first film critic to win the Pullitzer Prize in 1975, that says it all. My heart sank when I heard the news he was gone. A huge loss for anyone who loves movies. RIP Roger.

For this obit, Mr white... wow, Very well done. This is very sad news, a true loss not only to the film world but to the press; we seem so short of journalists upon whom almost everyone can agree. xx

He truly was a great film critic, and so much better than Paul Ross or Christopher Tookey. My heart goes out to his wife, family and friends.

Disappointed to see that the death of Milo O'Shea wasn't considered new worthy Empire!

His review of Speed 2 will always stick with me. While I wholeheartedly disagreed with his assessment of the film but I understood completely why he enjoyed it so much. It was a fine example of his brilliant writing style and love for all movies. He will be missed by generations for generations
