I'm going to give Rio Bravo a watch tonight just to get it out of the way (sorry siegfried but I can't bear John Wayne) and if I've got time I'll put on Heavenly Creatures to wash away the taste.

I generally don't like John Wayne either but Rio Bravo is so much more than him. The film that surrounds him is amazing.

Hopefully I'll enjoy it, I mean actively wanting to hate a film would be weird, but I have seen it before and don't have fond memories of it. That was ages ago though and my taste has changed quite dramatically since then so I'm hoping it'll be a pleasant enough 140 mins this time around.

Just kicked off my HOF viewings with Capturing the Friedmans. It had been a while since I last saw (when it ran in the cinemas, I think), but it holds up very well. Compelling and stomach churning.

Like Matty said, there's no doubting Arnold's possession of kiddie porn, but I had conflicting thoughts over his and Jesse's allegations of molestation.

I think Hawks' Wayne is very different to Ford's - hence the 'never knew the bugger could act' comment (paraphrasing a bit I think but not much!). Hawks tends to make him a man, not an icon.

People who hate Wayne will take to him a lot easier in Rio Bravo, I think. Mainly because the character of Carlos is so fucking annoying it's near impossible to dislike anybody else more.

Groundhog Day - Bill Murray is funny and awesome. Andie MacDowell is awful.

Yeah, the feedback should be interesting but I'll be happy enough if one or two people enjoy it.

In a strong round for me it has to be Badlands by a mile. Its stunning in every single way. I only watched it again the other week.

Akira I don't really get to be honest.
Eraserhead, sorry I'm another hater
Groundhog Day I love
Heavenly Creatures I'm afraid I'm a bit meh towards
Rio Bravo I'd like to see again to comment honestly.
The Train is great fun, you can never beat a bit of Burt, I hope people enjoy it
Stand By Me I'd need to see again too

I dunno, it's in my top 5 of all time so I'll be giving it a high placing obviously, and one or two mid place votes could see it through. I hope it makes the second round, it's an amazing film. I'm blaming Rebel if it fails.

Usaually when I give my support to a film it goes out in the first round, so since I wasn't impressed by it you're more likely to be a finalist!

At this stage, I can't see it making my top six, but I've still got a lot of watching to do. Have to say, though, that I can't see it as a worthy entry to the HOF.

Why? Because it wasn't released before 1960? For a film lover, you're remarkably dismissive of a lot of things. Akira is a very worthy entry, although perhaps not a winner.

Looking to get this off & running tomorrow. Badlands at the moment is the early favourite for me.

I adore Groundhog Day but as MC says, Andie McDowell's involvement could make all the difference in the voting for me.

Never expected Eraserhead to do much of anything, just wanted people to see it. It's very much a marmite film & I'd be a bit deflated if it was just getting "meh" responses as opposed to love it or hate it ones.

Does the Celestial Pictures edition of Human Lanterns normally come with quite a chunky insert book - the Total Film guide to the Shaw Brothers - or did I just chance across a rather lovely seller?

If it's the latter I'd like to acknowledge it in the feedback, so appreciate any guidance.

My copy has a slim 8 page booklet advertising other Shaw brothers titles but I didn't get a Total Film guide. I have a few other Shaw Brothers titles from Celestial but I've never seen the book you mention, so I'm guessing the seller put it in afterwards.

Thank you! The little guide you mention is in there as well. An extra thank you for a nice seller, then.

Capturing the Friedmans - disturbing and thought provoking. Think I'll have to watch it a second time to really get to grips with it.

Perhaps before posting a statement like that, you could have done your homework and checked out my DVD collection in my profile page. If you'd done so, you'd have seen that my collection covers a wide range of films from silents such as The General and Sunrise right up to The Avengers, Argo and Skyfall. You'll even find Akira in there.
I tend to speak my mind when it comes to films, and I realise that some of the views I express can be in rather strong terms. I make no apologies for that, and if you disagree with me, good for you - that's your right. However stylishly it is presented, I tend to be rather put off by the kind of relentlessly graphic violence in films like Akira. It just becomes gratuitous, and that's the main reason Akira will be getting a low ranking from me.

What I find difficult to comprehend is that there are people who actually see merit in this worthless, rancid piece of garbage.

Horses for courses, innit. I won't pretend to understand it fully, but I enjoy the film regardless.
