Surely the Beihn-ster, should be on this list too? Terminator, Aliens, The Rock?

We've had one of Sly's main opponents, you've suggested Carl Weathers, so why no the other main Rocky foe?

Definitely agree with both Empire's suggestion of Snipes and the above suggestion of Michael Biehn, both should appear at some point if they're doing this big action get together properly. Would also like to see Mark Dacascos (Drive, Crying Freeman) in a villainous role. I like most of the ideas in the article bar Connery (stay retired), cameos by Ford and Eastwood (perhaps as opposing figures in whatever conflict the Expendables are involved in) would be amazing, but Eastwood will never do it, Ford would have been a definite no as well, but I would have said the same about him appearing in Anchorman 2!

Chow Yun Fat-ter! Charismatic, funny, heroic and let's be honest... one of the most expendable heroes in cinema, the guy often dies or is more than willing to die... he would bring genuine humour to these films... ship out dead weight Couture and bring in Chow! Or Anthony Wong as an insane villain... be great to see him in Western cinema!

What about Mr Knightrider himself David Hasselhoff? if the expendables was intended to be cheesy, who is more cheesy than Michael Knight and KITT? definately agree Mr T needs to be in this.

Starred in virtually all direct-to-video knock-offs of major action hits during the 80's. Forgotten by virtually everyone on the Earth except for cult internet ranter The SpoonyOne.

Come on Sly, get an awesome script together about a car load of drugs being smuggled in from Marseille and lure Gene Hackman out of retirement. Give him the bad guy role - what I would give to see Mr Hackman have just one more crack at the title.

I was at the opening of Planet Hollywood in Dublin. Stallone and Schwarzenegger sprinted past, but Wesley Snipes stopped to talk with me. I was so dumbfounded that I heard myself saying: "Hey, Wes!" That's my Most Embarrassing Possible Future Expendables Casting Moment.

Kurt Russell was offered a part in The Expendables and his agent turned Stallone down saying that Kurt didn't do ensemble acting at that point in time. Russell's career could do with a boost, so I'm sure that will change.

Clint Eastwood is the granddaddy of the modern action movie (along with Connery, but I can't see him coming back now.) It would be great to see Clint give his stamp of approval to The Expendables franchise and say farewell to the action genre he virtually created. Mel Gibson has really burned all his bridges in Hollywood and nobody wants to bring a shitstorm down on their heads by casting him. Can't see Mel joining. Michael Dudikoff? Jesus, that is scraping the bottom of the barrel. He made Cannon cheapo films in the 80s and hasn't made a film in 11 years.

You mention Emilio Estevez of Brat Pack fame but miss out the most obvious choice, Kiefer Sutherland. Steven Seagal has to be in it too, it would be rude not to!

@hawaiiboy I don't think your list was better at all, because you don't seem to understand what makes Expendables Expendables - it's just a list of your favourite awesome action stars with no real thinking about their appropriateness for Expendables. You've got Vin Diesel and The Rock in there, where Empire explicitly explained why they weren't in their list. Liam Neeson wasn't an action star in the relavant era - that's only recent since Taken. Benicio Del Toro is a good actor (mostly) but he's never been an action star in any shape or form. And Takeshi wouldn't fit at all - I justv think you've included him to show off that you know who he is because you think he's a bit obscure.

I do think Empire missed Roddy Piper and Keith David though!

@Osric. Appreciate your thoughts, but I think you have missed something very obvious. Jason Statham, Liam Hemsworth, Randy Coture, Terry Crews, Steve Austin, Nan Yu. None of these are hardly 'relevant era' either. So both you AND Empire have misinterpreted what Stallone is doing. The Expendables are supposed to be a cross-generational embodiment of action heroes, seen through the prism of 80's flag-waving conscienceless action. When and where a particular actor fit the action model or their current popularity, or lack there of, is irrelevant.

As for Del Toro and Takeshi, i put them as villains. My thinking was that much like David Zayas in The Expendables, they would pose a more emotional rather than physical menace.

FYI, See Savages, Che, Sin City, The Way of the Gun, and Licence to kill as proof that Del Toro can do action. As for Takeshi, he has based a career in the 80's and 90's on playing sadistic nut job action men....so yeah, he would actually be a perfect fit.

I don' think I agree with very much of that at all. I think you miss the point that Empire have hardly forgotten that there are other types of people in Expendables, for a start, they've just set paramaters for this list so it isn't just totally arbitrary. Biehn and Piper would have fit the rules that they set for this particular feature, but your examples, generally not. Statham is the exception that proves the rule. Maybe Crews is slightly incongruous, but Couture and Austin are ex-wrestlers, so while they're not action stars, they're still the sort of throwback hard men that are the point of the films. It's disingenuous to try and suggest that Hemsworth was supposed to be part of that. He wa sthe young guy that was going to get killed. That was the role! So he had to be, er, a young guy. And Nan Yu comes into the tough but sexy female role thing that Sly is also talking about for the next one, and that, again, Empire explained why they left out. You're really reaching with Del Toro. Savages, Che - er, not action films. Arguably not even Sin City either, and he was hardly the centre of the action in the Bond film. He's an actor who has been in some films where there was shooting. And ditto Takeshi, I think he'd be really insulted that anyone would think he ever played an "action man'. You're conflating action and violence, and maybe that's semantics but they're not necessarily the same thing. It's like calling Goodfellas an action film. Takeshi is much more like Scorsese or someone in that sense.

But dont you think Empire's parameters are then contrary to what The Expendables stands for? Hemsworth proves that being an Expendable does not mean you have to be a solid part of the group, much like Arnie and Willis and Norris. More like bit-parts. I am not saying Takeshi would even consider being in this franchise, i am saying he would elevate the villains to a new level, because lets be honest Roberts and Van Damme were hardly solid bad guys. To that, the baddie does NOT have to be the evil version of Stallone, he can be anything. I can see your point about mixing action with violence, but isnt that the reason for broad choice? Its all about potential, not just "who has held a gun and who has been in an 80's action film before?" If that were the case then youd be wrong about Austin and Coture, as they are fighters not shooters. The Expendables is ensemble, a mixture of big guns, massive arms, comedy, scrappiness, brains, menace, cool. Thats why non-action stars such as Mickey Rouke are in it, to create a balance. Whatever your thoughts, i think we can agree we are both putting WAY too much thought into this. Haha

three words: Chow Yun Fat! How could you miss him?!?!?! The Expendables are all about shooting things, and Hard Boiled alone has a higher body count than the entire back catalogue of everyone on this list! He's also starred in some magnificent films such as Crouching TIger Hidden Dragon - arguably the most beautiful action film of all time.

Sign him up Sly!!!

Hehe, yeah, you're probably right! But no - I honestly don't. Expendables, to me, stands for bringing old action (in the loose sense of the word!) guys out of retirement. I think maybe you're talking about a potential for Expendables to be something you think it *could* be and wish it was. Which is fair enough I guess. I just don't think Sly has the same ambition for the series that you do! I just think they're throwaway retro action movies - and not very good ones at that (and I actually thought Van Damme was one of the best things about the last one). I reckon Empire probably think the same (maybe not the Van Damme bit!) and their reviews pretty much suggest that. They're at best just disposable fun. Honestly, as retro action films I *much* preferred Last Stand and Bullet to the Head.

How about former James Bond Pierce Brosnan. Also Viggo Mortensen or Warwick Davis. Matt Damon is another one that would look good in the Expendables. Also Michael Caine is another one that could do it.
