As requested.

So, what do people think/predict?

Looks like The Great Gatsby is opening way too early to be a serious contender.

Other than that, the only ones that spring to mind for films/performances -

Diana

The Wolf of Wall Street

Janis Joplin: Get It While You Can (I'm assuming they're going to drop the first bit of that awful title)

Captain Phillips

Inside Lleweyn Davis

Nebraska

Monuments Men

Saving Mr. Banks

The Butler

Grace of Monaco.

Wouldn't be any more of a facepalm than Ang Lee winning.

The Hobbit 2 for anything

I really have no clue what's coming out in the next year.

A predict a bunch of stuff which wont constitute as the best of the year but are backed by the Weinstein company, will achieve nominations.

Rawlinson & Elab will also disapprove of almost everything, bar the occasional self-referential or quirky offering.

And in general it'll be a waste of time, money & effort as this self-congratulatory backslapping procession tends to be.

However, the forum nominations will still make less sense than the academy ones.

Unusually, he gave good reviews to most of them, including a Spielberg and a Tarantino, and has also been talking up Argo.

I liked all the films that weren't smug wankfests that spoonfed the audience while pretending they had depth. Like Life of Pi or Les Miserables.

This is what amazes me about you, you'll criticise the script of Argo and then praise Deep Blue Sea, Dog Soldiers and Die Hard 4.

Is it just films that begin with D that you like?

Please see earlier agreement with Qwerty re Django.

ALTHOUGh - Django, Django - ie Corbucci Django, is on tonight. Ch 183 or somesuch (plus 1 at 10pm)

But if you want me to assess it like those 3, it's not as much fun, it doesn't have the sense of self or pace, and I wouldn't give Oscars to any of them anyway.

Yeah, but that's a silent D. Doesn't count.

You do have me, when we got to the end of Django and the screenwriter used the characters to tell the audience exactly what they think because it assumed they were too dumb to get a really simple idea without it... oh wait, that was Life of Pi.

So, aside from a couple of minutes of exposition delivered by a character who is literally telling a story to a novelist in a big budgeted film released by 20th century fox...you loved it yeah?

Sorry, I've just realised this is the 2014 thread - maybe take this back to the 2013 one?

I'd make a guess at Foreign film, but a lot of the ones I've seen recently were submitted for last year. I'd guess some might end up in the main eligibility list though - I think Caesar Must Die is getting a US theatrical run eg.

They've changed the rules so that can't happen any longer. If a film is submitted for foreign language one year then it can't get nominated in main categories the next year. It's an incredibly stupid idea and it basically deprives films of attention. The foreign language system needs a major overhaul.

It does indeed. Does that mean that some films might say they don't want to be submitted as a foreign film contender anymore? Which would be doubly silly.

I think Pitt is going to be support for The Counselor, with Fassbender as the lead.

Just going by imdb, I'm getting an American Gangster vibe from it already - sounds an amazing story, but will probably suffer from slack storytelling.
