Right then, ladies first (neither list in order of preference): Kate Bush - if ever a female vocal came close to aural eroticism its the "come on angel, come on come on darlin'" phrase from Running Up That Hill Maria McKee - Poor Maria will probably never get past that awful Days of Thunder song, but to write her off based on this is to miss one of the finest voices in recent years. Whether its her new country rocking with Lone Justice (check out East of Eden or Dixie Storms), her earlier solo work (Breathe is simply beautiful, Drinkin' In My Sunday Dress retains her country roots) or the later work that Youth produced (highlight - The Sweetest Child), Ms McKee is definitely worth checking out Aretha - 'nuff said! Tori Amos - You can almost taste the bitterness in her performance on Silent All These Years "What's so amazing about really deep thoughts? Boy you'd better pray that I bleed real soon - how's that thought for you?" She's not afraid to take songs to very different places - just check out her Strange Little Girls album of covers, particulary Modern Day Bonnie & Clyde and I Don't Like Mondays Etta James- would you like that slice of fried gold dipped in honey? I've just the thing Natalie Merchant - because she dedicated A Campfire Song to me when I saw 10,000 Maniacs in or around '88 And the blokes: Otis Redding - can't believe it took nearly 30 posts in this thread before Otis got a mention! Just check out the raw emotion on songs like I've Been Lovin' You Too Long or A Change is Gonna Come Sam Cooke - see above Robert Plant - because Led Zepp were earth-shakingly mighty and he was the hoarse foreman of the apocalypse! Greg Dulli - nobody does sleaze like our Greg - listen to anything from Gentlemen or Black Love Thom Yorke - Listen to Exit Music then tell me he doesn't deserve a place on this list - I dare you! Jonsi - one of the benefits of speaking neither Icelandic or Sigur Ros' made-up language is that you can simply enjoy the vocal performance for what it is. And in this case, what it is is a thing of ethereral beauty. That'll do for now. I may revise at several stages before the 31st deadline!
