Mercury was on six lists, and on five of these he was in the top ten. So a high points singer indeed.

He was only incredibly close to number four in points as well. Obviously that means nothing until I update the list, but it might give Rawlinson a heart attack.

The fact that he's above so many great singers was enough to make me weep. I understand people can't help having shocking taste, but this country really needs some re-education camps.

I was expecting Waits to be number one.

Yeah, same. Springsteen (presumably, unless something truly horrid has happened and everybody forgot to vote for him) and Waits in the top 4 is pretty good though.

Even if Ryan Adams was a mere 31st.

In my dreams, Scott Walker would have been number one, with Waits second.

I didn't see Buckley being in the top five though. I like his voice a lot, but he slipped my mind until last minute when writing my list.

You mentioned a songwriter list at some point, you should do it, would be fun.

It would, but damn it it would be hard.

Though if everyone did a lot of proper thinking, we could get a fantastic mix of people - from Cohen and Ellie Greenwich to Gerswhin and Porter and Weill. Tempting....

Anyway...THE RESULTS ARE IN. The forum has chosen the two greatest vocalists of all time. Discuss.

Thanks - it was actually fun, I got to listen to a lot of new stuff.

I thought you'd be pleased.

Springsteen and Bush both dominated the votes; there were almost 100 points between Springsteen and Gaye, and over 100 for Bush and Simone. Both top tens are fantastic lists as well.

I have to say I'm surprised, I expected both to place in the top 10, but not to dominate to that extent. Happy though.

What's interesting is who cropped up on most lists.

All of the women's top five were on eight different lists - they were clear frontrunners from the beginning, Whilst for the men, despite Gaye and Springsteen fighting it out from the onset, several artists would do well on one, then be no-shows or low down on a lot of others.

You'll find the same with the films lists, you'll have films like The Godfather in the top 10 on every list that includes them, then not at all on about half the lists.

Great work, MA!

I honestly thought that Bush and Springsteen had already appeared on the list. Maybe that shows how forgettable I find them to be

Oh, now - that's not fair. How could Bush be called forgettable? If you don't think she's good, fair enough (but you're wrong), but forgettable is a word that just doesn't work with her.

Can't really argue with the top 2. Jeff Buckley is too high for my liking, but that's how these things go and it's not like I didn't contribute to his points tally

Cheers for sticking with this MA. It's unusual (and welcome) for an Audiophile poll/list to actually make it to the end

Thanks. I did enjoy putting it together as I've listened to a lot of songs and singers I wouldn't have otherwise. And I agree, Buckley is a little too high.

Would there be any interest in a song-writers list, mentioned vaguely somewhere upthread? Something to tide Audiophile over until the Christmas Number One (which I am definitely going to run again). If there is, I'd be happy to run it.

Forgettable in as much as the fact she hadn't appeared on the list didn't register

I wrote a Christmas song in my sleep last night, I think you should take that as a sign to run a songwriter's poll.

Excellent list really. Cheers MA.
Somehow thought Gaye had already been - couldn't figure out who #2 could have been.

And yes, I'd definitely be up for the songwriter's poll.

When you say other people, do you mean the family members who you coerced into joining the forum so they could vote for Mercury?

The second I read "family members", I thought of Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Missed out quite a few, but I'll have a rundown of the top 8, because I can. And because I get to include Bowie and Bjork that way.

Sam Cooke - excellent.
David Bowie - amazing. It's Bowie.
Bjork - ditto. Listened to Medulla for the first time in ages the other day and the things she can do with her voice are incredible.
Darlene Love - love Darlene Love.
Otis Redding - excellent.
Janis Joplin - ditto.
Freddie Mercury - I like Mercury. Leaving Queen aside and just focusing on his voice, it is fantastic. He knew what he was doing as a frontman.
Stevie Nicks - excellent.
Tom Waits - ditto.
Aretha Franklin - ditto.
Jeff Buckley - ditto.
Dusty Springfield - so glad she's this high up. Love her.
Marvin Gaye - brilliant.
Nina Simone - ditto.
Bruce Springsteen - not as big a fan as some people but I do think he's great and he has a great voice.
Kate Bush - YAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSS. Perfect number 1.

Freddie Mercury - My mum was a massive Queen fan so I grew up listening to Freddie's voice. It's incredible. My mum also listened to a lot of Take That but funnily enough, I'm not so much of a fan.
Stevie Nicks - Great voice. Another one I didn't vote for.
Tom Waits - I feel like I would really love him but I can't get into him - where should I start with him?
Aretha Franklin - Absolutely amazing voice.
Jeff Buckley - I love his voice. It's so fragile.
Dusty Springfield - Yes! Love Dusty. So great to see her so high up.
Marvin Gaye - Gorgeous voice, sends shivers down the spine. Good shivers.
Nina Simone - When I first 'discovered' Simone I binged on her music. God, what a voice.
Bruce Springsteen - Another one I never got into. Can see why he's so well loved though.
Kate Bush - *Fist pump* She's so great, isn't she? Love her a ridiculous amount.

Great list, some really interesting left field choices in there.

Brilliant, cheers Such a great list, deeply personal as well so it doesn't just look like your average best singer list.

OK I know I didn't vote and therefore am not allowed to grumble but for me there is one glaring omission from this list.
