I forgot about the 3rd, even though I just skimmed past it doing the Best film shortlist. Which is basically a combination of foreign and animation!

So you're voting for Rango and Rio then?

Why is it still impossible to find subtitles for Arrugas? Even the film is on youtube now.

Have you tried watching it with the Beta translation to English? It's hilarious.

How disappointed will you be if I tell you Riva was just one point short of forcing a tie for fifth place? Because if you'll be too disappointed then I won't tell you.

I've tried the machine translations before - the ones that are more fun are the English translations from Korean/Chinese.

If I'd gotten my votes in I'd have voted for Riva. Does that make it worse?

On the voting front, was there anyone other than Elab who missed out because of the shift in deadline? Because I was thinking of allowing people who missed the chance to nom to still vote for the winner.

Me.

I only noticed last night that the deadline had been changed and I was nowhere near completing my ballot then

I missed it, but most of my favourites made it in anyway.

Ok, I think that just leaves Ultimo and Rhubarb from the people who sent nominations.

Are the results going to be revealed at the same time as the Oscars, or later?

Basically, is it worth staying up tonight to see who wins?

I think I might reveal them tonight, put them up after midnight so any discussion can be about them tonight rather than having them clash with the Oscars tomorrow night. So we can all say how much better our choices were. Should be able to put them up shortly after midnight as well, because I don't have to go hunting for posters etc. That's what slowed it down the other night.

I can't remember if I knew the voters rank them for the final vote - so people who really didn't like Argo eg put it 9th (I was just reading a sidebar in the Guardian).

Yeah, they changed it so that the preferential ballot extends beyond nominations to final votes. Just in best picture though.

I wondered, but the example given was only for film so I thought that might be it.

Just think - the joy of negative voting!

I think it's a bad idea, tbh. Did you see that depressingly shitty anonymous director's ballot? He refused to vote for positions 3 - 9, just voted the top two. He put Lincoln in second place, admitting that he found it boring, but wanted to include it because it was Spielberg and "important". The entire ballot was the work of a complete dickhead, not because of what he was voting for and against, but because his reasoning was mostly empty-headed. But now instead of just being able to vote for his favourite film in Zero Dark Thirty, he's also getting to throw a sympathy vote to another film because of bullshit ideas of importance and admiration of the director over the film itself. Before they were restricted to just picking their favourite, now they can play politics.

Well, normally I'd go for middling thriller with a poor script and a miscast lead, but it seems close enough.
