So, Mrs UTB is away in a couple of weeks and I was thinking of spending a Sunday watching a marathon of movies... perusing my shelves this morning I noticed unopened copies of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile and think it would be a capital idea to do a Darabont marathon, so I'll be acquiring The Majestic and The Mist and will watch them in some sort of order.


What marathons (if any) have you watched/enjoyed/plan to watch?

Anyone done a full on Bond marathon as was in Empire a couple of years ago?

I notice the Prince Charles Cinema is doing a Nightmare on Elm Street marathon... sounds painful.

 Did they even finish the Bond marathon? I'm not convinced they managed it to the end.

I've done:

My first marathon was Fincher: Alien 3 - Fight Club (at the time, his most recent film).

Star Trek I - VI.

The Planet of the Apes 1 - 5.

The Fast and the Furious 1 - 5 (no, I don't know why either).

Lord of the Rings.

I'm sure I've done more, but I can't think off the top of my head.

I'm curious about the sheer madness of the Bond marathon. I also want to do a Star Wars marathon, but using the Machete Order, just in case it really does make the prequels almost watchable.

The Machete order sounds interesting, just read up on it. Might have to give that a go at some point.

Regarding the Bond films, back in 2006, when they had all of Connery through to Brosnan, I bought and watched all 20 DVDs, but not in chronological order.

I've done the LOTR back-to-back.

PotC (when there were only three films) over the course of a few days.

I've got the Resident Evil box set, which I plan to have a crack at in a future weekend.


I do wonder something - who has watched George Lucas' "proper" Star Wars saga (Episodes I to VI) in order, and what was it like?

There's an account somewhere online of someone showing it in that order to someone who had not only never seen Star Wars, but amazingly knew none of the plot, including the major twists-that-are-not-twists-anymore-really. Interesting, really.

And did you watch the Bond films back to back? Cos that's pretty hardcore.

If memory serves, I think one of them did, but I also seem to remember that none of them made it through every film, as in they all fell asleep and/or got bored and went for a walk at some point.


In the cinema I've done:
Star Trek 1 - Generations OR First Contact (I can't remember) - a staff-only marathon when I worked at Showcase in the 90s, ending up with either Generations or First Contact (whichever one would have been a preview at the time). I slept through most of 4 and 5, making sure I was fully awake for 6, which is the only Star Trek film I really like.

Star Wars 4, 5 and 6...gulp...special editions - again whilst I was working at Showcase, however this was not a staff-only marathon. This was the first time people found out the full impact of Lucas' changes to the saga. Cue many unhappy faces.

Dollars trilogy - one I've recounted many times in these here walls. A tiny indie cinema in Bristol (the Cube Micoplex, for locals) got hold of some original prints of the entire trilogy and were serving free coffee and beans (with or without toast) throughout the whole thing. A fantastic little marathon, only slightly marred by the print for GBU literally melting in the projector on more than one occasion (including right in the middle of the Ecstasy of Gold sequence).

In the comfort of my own home, I've done numerous marathons both with friends and on my own.

I usually do a horror marathon over the course of a Halloween weekend. In past years they've ranged from the 4 Omen films (part 4 was a terrible tv movie that got included in the R1 dvd boxset) to 7 Nightmare on Elm Streets to all 10 Friday the 13ths (the latter two with the possible addition of Freddy vs Jason).

Good fun, but you certainly don't want to watch them again for a loooong time.

About one-and-a-half to two months; I gave myself some days off between viewings. It's best not to get saturated - even for a Bond fan!!

I did a Star Wars marathon a couple of years ago but did it 1-6. There was a point during AOTC when I couldn't wait to get to the originals. In fact I considered quitting the prequels and just moving onto A New Hope, despite the fact ROTS is better than the previous two. But I held out and it made the originals even better. I actually found the Luke/Vader stuff in the originals more effective after watching the prequels. I'd like to give the machete order a go though because TPM is dog poo and it means you don't start or end with terrible films. Something to do during the Easter holidays methinks.

I've also done a special edition LOTR marathon which was tiring but excellent.

I do it each year. In fact I had a Star Wars marathon last month. 6 nights, 6 Star Wars movies starting with TPM. I'm not much of a Star Wars fan but the series has grown on me as I've grown older.

I also did a LOTR marathon a few months back. I actually think I enjoyed 'Return of The King' a lot more this time around than I did when I originally watched it just under a decade ago.

Exactly.

There are some pretty enjoyable ones in there. What's most amusing about the early movies is the tenuous reasons as to why his character knows martial arts ("he's ex CIA, now a teacher", "He's ex special ops, now he bakes cakes"), however after about the 10th film they just stopped bothering to write the reason in.

 People are being pre-tty fast and loose with their definitions of "marathons".

If you're watching them with breaks in between that's not a marathon.

20 Bond films over several months is not a marathon.

Six films over six nights is not a marathon.

Non-stop, with short comfort breaks between. That's a marathon. Which is why a Bond marathon is the marathon to end all marathons.

His last 10 dvds or so have been episodes of his tv show. He has only released about two actual films in the last two years.

I did an Indy marathon last year all four films back to back and I also did watch all six of the Star wars films in order as well last year. Will be watching all 11 Star Trek movies soon ready for Star Trek in to Darkness.

I had an operation a few years back, and subsequently enjoyed battering a few horror franchises.
I did the Nightmare on Elm Street films one day, followed by Halloween, Friday the 13th, Rambo (only 3 at the time) and finishing with the Hellraiser films.
I was quite excited to be having time off (I was told 6 weeks) but after that lot over about 4 days, I went back to work.

 I've never done any real movie marathons, but I did watch the entire Season 4 of 24 in one day. I didn't plan on doing so, but every time an episode finished, I thought to myself 'just one more...'

 My ex and I did the Lord of the Rings extended editions marathon when the Return of the King box set was released. I think my arse is still waking up.

That's it, really. I think I'd get a bit restless watching film after film, but all power to you if you can and want to. I've done some telly box set marathons (I watched all of Life On Mars in two sittings) but programmes aren't really the same.

I did watch There Will Be Blood followed by My Left Foot yesterday in honour of my man Daniel's historic Oscars triumph, but I doubt two films a marathon makes.

LOTR extended editions several times
Indy 1-3
Die Hard 1-4
Back To The Future 1-3
Scream 1-3 (then 4 at the cinema the next morning)
Austin Powers 1-3
Paranormal Activity 1-3 (then 4 at the cinema the next morning - notice a trend?)

I enjoy doing them every so often, but the thought of doing a Bond marathon is terrifying. I think it would crush me.

I've been thinking about trying a Tarantino one for a while, but I always chicken out when I remember all of his films sit at 2hrs+, except for Reservoir Dogs, so even by Kill Bill territory I'd be bamboozled. And now Django is about to come out, which will only go and add another three hours on.

 At home I've only done a Star Wars marathon, from Episodes I - VI.

But at the Prince Charles Cinema I've gone to a few:
Alien (Prometheus - Resurrection)
Amblin (ET, BTTF, Gremlins, Arachnophbia, Goonies, InnerSpace)
John Hughes (Weird Science, Bueller, Planes Trains, Pretty in Pink, Uncle Buck & the Breakfast Club)
Bourne 1-3
and most recently a Ghostbusters double bill, though that's not exactly a massive feat.

That was probably the worst one!

For the original question, no never done it, I'm pathetic, even though I'm a film enthusiast I just can't get in the mood or can't be arsed, I couldn't be arsed watching Once upon a time in America in one go and it was on my shelf for years, if I look at a DVD and the running time is over 220 mins it puts me off, never mind doing a marathon

Edit: sorry I mean 120 minutes

I did the Back to the Future trilogy marathon once. It wasn't planned, I just happened to watch the first one on TV, felt like watching the second one afterwards so stuck it in the DVD player, and then felt like watching the third immediately after that as well.

I did the Star Wars trilogy marathon on VHS when I was little, but I've yet to do it with all 6 on BluRay.
