Also, is there a possibility we can have a run through of what some of the more technical awards actually mean? Like Sound Editing etc.

Sorry, missed this earlier.

This is a pretty good description.

quote:

The short description of the differences goes like this: Sound editors assemble all the sound elements except music and edit it into a soundtrack that is synchronized to the images on screen. That includes assembling everything from dialogue tracks recorded on location to sound effects, Foley and ADR, or additional dialogue recording. The mixer then takes the elements of the edited soundtrack and the music and adjusts the volume levels and 3D placement in the theatrical environment.

Any others you want a run through for?

In terms of that it's okay but in general some of the films are utterly awful and most of my top 20/30 are missing.

Oh yeah, I agree. The films missing from these are always bewildering, and it's usually some silly little rule that's made them ineligible. The rule change on foreign language films is a disgrace. It used to be that a film could be submitted for consideration for the foreign language Oscar in one year, and then be eligible in the other categories the next year if it got a qualifying American cinema release. They've now changed it so that can't happen anymore.

But, once you start actually going through the list, you'll usually find you can make a decent shortlist. Even if you are then wondering "Why the fuck is x not eligible?" for most of it.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND PLEASURE
Best Actress - Greta Gerwig
Best Supporting Actor - Adam Brody - Yes that one!
Best Film - Damsels in Distress
Best Director / Original Screenplay - Whit Stillman

and maybe Best Cinematography - Doug Emmett

Even if you end up hating it, watch it!

Maybe?

Got it, thanks, Matty.

FYC - Could you all please consider voting for good films rather than Les Mis' or Life of Pi?

Finally saw Life of Pi yesterday, the only thing that made me angrier this week was Terry Cunting Deary.

Yeah, but Forrest Gump was acclaimed for its visuals as well...

I'm allowing up to 5.

Gump is excrement served on a lake of stinky piss and Damsels is not.

Oh wait, I thought you were saying it's a lovely looking film in response to my annoyance about Pi, not Damsels. I still need to see Damsels.

Oh right no.

Should I watch Holy Motors before my final ballot? Is it final that Foreign Language is out?

Oh and anyone want to recommend a score feel free, I've listened to Anna Karenina, Dredd 3D, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Lincoln, The Master and Argo.

Holy Motors? Oh fuck yeah. Watch it. Amazing amazing amazing film. Damsels is on Lovefilm instant, so I'll watch that before the deadline, see if it makes my list.

Foreign language, it's going to depend on the number of people who vote for it, so include it, and if I can, I'll get the nominations from it.

Les Mis will feature highly in many of my votes!

What's wrong with Terry Deary?

The Pirates!, Frankenweenie, Brave, Prometheus. They all tend to work better outside of the film I think. Snow White had a great score that was way better than the film itself. Skyfall's not bad either.

Really liked Les Mis too, but apart from a couple of technical awards can't see it featuring that heavy in my list.

Greta Gerwig might have to settle for best supporting actress for me, she is outstanding in DID through.

Come on people show ZDT the respect it deserves!

One of the things I dislike about the Oscars and the other major film awards is the fact that they separate foreign films. Films are films. Animated and documentaries are completely different, but another language doesn't render a film different enough that it shouldn't be included in the Best Films category. The other problem is that too many of the films in the best picture category are from the US, Canada and UK.

Just highlights it's very much American awards, no different from Bafta, Ifta, Caesars etc. The additional clout has meant even dumber rules on foreign film submission bringing in the countries to submit.

That's more about distribution than anything else. It actually is technically the American Academy Awards, same as the Baftas are the British Academy Awards. If a film isn't released in the country in the allotted time period, there's not much can really be done. Foreign language films are eligible in the best picture category at all of them, that's how a film like Amour made it in this year, they just have to had a release in that country. The Foreign Film category is useful in that it can give promotion to some films around the world that they would never have had otherwise, it's just the nominations procedure is a shambles.

Although none have been nominated yet, documentaries are eligible for Best Picture, aren't they? Just for future reference....

Yep, as long as its on the eligibility list for that year then you can vote for it in Best Picture. If something isn't on the eligibility list and it gets voted for then I'm just skipping that vote and bumping things up a place.

I'm not doing the documentary category though. I can't actually find the longlist (if someone else knows where it is online, that would be helpful) just the shortlist of 15. So it's either asking people to vote for 5 of a set 15, which is just stupid, or it's hoping that enough people would have seen more than 5 of the eligible films from the longlist to make sure the nominations are actually fair. If someone can find the early longlist and try to include it, I will, but much like Foreign Film, it's going to depend on number of lists we get in with a full 5 votes.
