That sounds fantastic - I'd be so up for that!

Though this year is proving difficult enough - for me, Supporting Actor has too many, when Supporting Actress has too few.

This is quite a good idea, despite the general poll exhaustion at the moment.

I'm having a lot of trouble when it comes to actress/supporting actress. The only one I can think for Best Actress isn't even eligible.

No probs.

One more thing, the bizarre adapted screenplay rules will also work here. So a sequel is counted as an adapted work, even if it's not based on a book/play.

What about films based on board games?

The good thing about this, I think, is that it requires less effort. You have the lists of what's eligible in front of you, so you don't need to put any thought into remembering films. Also, each category is a very small number, and you don't have to vote in each category. So it's not like trying to remember x amount of films on a certain theme.

I think it's quite a rich year for best actress possibilities. Who was the actress you wanted?

Good call. The scene where they're in the pub singing You Belong to Me, just the look on Weisz's face through it means she deserves the nom for me.

That's one of my favourite scenes in recent film - it's just so beautiful. Weisz is stunning throughout, whilst both Hiddleston (who is so perfectly cast it's unbelievable) and Beale give fantastic performances.

Yeah, but I'm not sane!

I wanted Katharine Isabelle for American Mary. That's really the most impressive, obviously lead, female performance I've seen from last year. Unless I have Polly the dodo.

Cool cool.

One more thing, Oscar rules apply - An actor can't be nominated twice in the same category for different performances, they also can't be nominated in two categories for the same performance. So if there's an actor who has the potential for nomination for two different films (Anne Hathaway for DKR/LM, Bruce Willis for Moonrise/Looper) think carefully about which performance you're voting for. Also, if an actor could split categories for their performance (Waltz in Django) think about if you want to vote for them in lead or support. An actor can be nominated as both lead and support, as long as they're for different films (Jamie Foxx for Ray/Collateral) For some reason, while this rule applies to actors, it doesn't apply to directors, so if there's anyone who has made two films you love in the last year, they could be eligible twice. If a performer gets enough votes in both films to be nominated twice in the same category, then I'll drop the film with the lowest number of votes.

The two Tyler Perry classics are in danger of splitting votes by my reckoning.

I'll try and get a list in for this soon. When's the deadline?

I was a little worried about Hiddleston at first. His first (think it was first anyway) scene where he kept calling her old fruit in a seductive way made me laugh. Not sure that was the intended reaction. After that he was pretty brilliant, yeah.

Supporting Actress is being a right pain - so far, I've got Jacki Weaver and Amy Adams and that's it. Supporting Actor, on the other hand, has too many.

Also, is there a possibility we can have a run through of what some of the more technical awards actually mean? Like Sound Editing etc.

For Your Consideration:

Magic Mike - Best Supporting Actor (Matthew McConaughey).

That's two more than I have at the moment

When I can't even figure out a way to get The Hobbit involved in either actress category you know I'm struggling. But...is there any kind of time limit required? If you're the only actress in a three hour film but only appear for three minutes, can you be nominated for Best Actress?

If the Oscars let Judi Dench win for Shakespeare in Love, you can have Cate Blanchett in The Hobbit .

There's no reason why Blanchett couldn't be in support, but lead would be beyond a stretch. The lead character in a film is the one who carries the narrative, so for The Hobbit, you're looking at one lead actor, everyone else in support. That's not to say there haven't been some massive cases of category fraud at the Oscars though. Hopkins in Lambs springs to mind, as does Brando in The Godfather. But at least there can be an argument made for those.

I only managed four in that category, and two of them are there to fill space. I think Rawls said you don't have to fill every slot though.

I reckon it's because a lot of the films with a great lead actress performance - Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, The Deep Blue Sea - are languishing in my to-watch list.
