I was going to call the thread Fixing the Oscars but it read too much like an accusation. Anyway, not a poll exactly, but I was wondering if there'd be any interest in this? I was thinking it'd be fun to vote for our own Oscars, based on the list of films that were Academy eligible.

http://www.oscars.org/awards/academyawards/rules/reminderlist.html

That link takes you to the full list of all films eligible for the major Oscars. Categories like Foreign Film, Shorts, Documentaries, work to their own bizarre rules, so they're not included in that link. But if there's enough interest I was thinking that we could all vote in the same way the Oscars themselves are voted for, ballots of your top five in each category (10 for Best Picture) to get the list of nominations, then vote for our favourite in each category to determine the winner.

Definitely up for this!

Moonrise Kingdom for your consideration - Actress and Film. You know it should win.

Cool cool.

One more thing, Oscar rules apply - An actor can't be nominated twice in the same category for different performances, they also can't be nominated in two categories for the same performance. So if there's an actor who has the potential for nomination for two different films (Anne Hathaway for DKR/LM, Bruce Willis for Moonrise/Looper) think carefully about which performance you're voting for. Also, if an actor could split categories for their performance (Waltz in Django) think about if you want to vote for them in lead or support. An actor can be nominated as both lead and support, as long as they're for different films (Jamie Foxx for Ray/Collateral) For some reason, while this rule applies to actors, it doesn't apply to directors, so if there's anyone who has made two films you love in the last year, they could be eligible twice. If a performer gets enough votes in both films to be nominated twice in the same category, then I'll drop the film with the lowest number of votes.

Ok, I've edited an email address into the first post. Here's how it'll work. The eligible categories are

Picture
Director
Lead Actor
Supporting Actor
Lead Actress
Supporting Actress
Original Screenplay
Adapted Screenplay
Animated Film
Art Direction/Production Design
Cinematography
Costume Design
Editing
Make Up/Hair
Score
Song
Sound Editing
Sound Mixing
Visual Effects

I'm not going to include the shorts categories, or documentaries or foreign films. Simply because the shortlists of eligible films are often so much more difficult to see, I'd imagine most voters here would be restricted to the easily available titles, which seems to make it a bit of a pointless exercise. If anyone feels really really strongly about including them, let me know, but again, they'd be restricted to the Academy eligibility lists.

For each category, you make a ballot, for best picture you can vote for 10 films, every other category is a maximum of five. Vote in preferential order in each category. You don't have to vote in every category, and you don't have to vote for the maximum number in each category. The Academy uses a preferential ballot system, but given they've got several thousand more voters than us, I'm going to change it to a simple points system for the nominations. Your number one choice gets five points, your number five gets one point. When it comes to best picture, your number one will get ten points.

You can vote for an actor several times in a category (As I mentioned in the earlier post, Bruce Willis in Looper and Willis in Moonrise Kingdom, for example) but only the performance with the most overall points will be nominated. You can't vote for the same performance in two categories, you have to decide if you think Waltz is supporting or lead in Django.

All ballots to be sent by email or pm, any posted on thread will not be counted. Votes to be in by midnight Saturday 23rd Feb, then I'll announce our nominees on the 24th - Oscar night.

I originally included a link for the best songs nominations, but it might be easier to cut and paste the eligible entries here, just in case

No probs.

One more thing, the bizarre adapted screenplay rules will also work here. So a sequel is counted as an adapted work, even if it's not based on a book/play.

Actually, I've just checked and The Woman In Black is ineligible. That'll save you a lot of headaches .

You just know Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter will be in Gimli's top 10 though.

I'm actually seeing the stage play again next week. Woman in Black, not Vampire Hunter, although that would be hilarious.

Could we add this? I think about 15-20 have been available over here, even if at festival and, yet again, I know they're idiots because Caesar Must Die should have made it.

Timbzy, got the list, thanks.

Elab, we can try, but my concern is that there's not going to be enough people who've seen five of the submissions. If the final five are decided by just two or three votes, it doesn't seem very fair. So what I'll do is allow it, and see what kind of numbers come in for it.

When it comes to the lists, I'm not going to look through any of them until the deadline day. That way I can be surprised too. Also, otherwise I'm going to spend the next week getting incredibly annoyed if I think Les Miserables or Life of Pi are leading the votes in any way. What that means is you have to get your nominations right, be sure to check the eligible list, if anyone votes for something that isn't eligible, I'm just going to skip that entry and move the lower films up a notch on your ballots. I'm not allowing changes in this poll, just like the real Oscars, so don't vote until you're certain of your ballots.

I've worked out how rubbish gets nominated.

I have no feeling for any of those songs. Maybe the one from Chasing Ice was OK but the vocal wasn't brilliant. So what do I do? Why, look and see what other groups who do care about song have been saying. Or just choose the least worst films from the list and go with that.

No wonder so many bad choices are mad. Mine will be

I'm hoping Abraham's Daughter will be on a lot of lists. I can pretty much guarantee you won't vote for it though. I haven't had a proper look through the rest of the song list yet.

Quick look through says we could have a best song list with nominees of Arcade Fire, Beck, Black Keys, Karen O and John Legend. This should happen.

Actually it's one of the least annoying of the ones I've heard.

I did go through the full list a while back so best film & animated should be easy enough.

Working on my own and I've just flagged a potential problem - Holy Motors. Academy rules say that if a film is based on characters from a previous film that it should be considered an Adapted screenplay. That's why Toy Story 3 ended up in Adapted. One of the segments in Holy Motors uses a character who first appeared in Tokyo. As such, it would probably have been an adapted screenplay if it made the Oscars.

I know, it doesn't feel right, but basically it would be seen as a sequel, I think. At least under the rules that see Before Sunset, TS3, Borat and In the Loop nominated for adapted screenplay.

What about a short film that's basically a test before a feature? It's not on the list this year, but I was thinking of On the Ice. Do you think the existence of the short would put it into adapted as well?

I thought you would have been more excited about The Hobbit.

Btw, Serkis is eligible, as are voice performances in animation. What isn't eligible is if it's a cgi creation or animal performer. So no Richard Parker this year and no Uggie for the previous year. Which brings me to this, if all goes well with this one and the interest is there then I'll take it back through the years, but give a longer deadline for the nominations round in case anybody has something they really want to watch before voting.
