Whilst Frankenstein and Dracula were period movies and the Mummy was set in contemporary times, it has become 30s period movie, which gives it it's charm. It thrives on the early 20th century's fascination with Egyptian tomb raiding and the fears therein. Whilst Sherlock has shown that ditching a period setting previously thought essential to the character is possible, I somehow doubt this movie will have the same pedigree as that show. Play to it's strengths, make it a period horror.
