ORIGINAL: Ghidorah South Africa can be a very dangerous place. When I went there I didn't see any crime but I did see a shit ton of barb wires around walls. It's also common to see warning signs of armed response of trespassing or intrusion. It's a great country but I have no doubt what I saw everywhere that there are a lot of dangerous people living in SA. In the mid-90s, a friend was sent to Durban to work with BMW. He went out with some friends for the night and started slowing down for a red light in the city centre, only for his SA friends to scream at him to keep going. When he set off, he glanced in the rear view and saw a gang of armed men approaching the car. Apparently the practice was to approach cars at stop lights, shoot the driver in the head through the window then drag the body out and steal the car. I don't know if it's still the case, but in SA it was permissable to use lethal force to protect your person and property. This led to a number of deadly systems being built into cars to deter car thieves including a firing mechanism built into the steering column that shot anyone tampering with the wheel lock, airbags on the car roof that detonated with such force that best would concuss the potential thief, at worst break their neck or fracture their skull, and (my personal favourite) side-mounted flame throwers that burned anyone trying to force the doors. All very Robo-Cop if you ask me!
