Pretty much. I'm pretty sure neither Elab or Gimli will be voting for them. I probably would have had them in the 101 - 150 area if this was just films, but with it being expanded to cover t.v., books, etc , they might not make it at all.

You are going to vote for Goodfellas though? It's Top 5 material for me at this stage.

I really need to finish watching The Wire so I can vote for it in this poll. I'm up to date with Breaking Bad which I can see creeping into my Top 20.

And a bit through Season 3. I remember the last ep I saw, Avon and String had a big fight.

Meh, Goodfellas is glossy and souless in comparison.

Okay, this might seem a bit of a silly question, but bear with me...

The City Watch books from Terry Pratchett's Discworld. They all take the form of police procedurals with everything that goes along with those kind of stories... they just happen to take place on a flat world with trolls, dwarves and dragons. I realise it may be pushing it a bit.

I'm not sure I'd call them procedurals tbh although there is a crime committed in probably the earlier ones (not all - Night Watch wouldn't come close to qualifying and nor would the likes of Jingo, even if he does arrest them). The higher Vimes goes up the ladder the more it's the machinations of politics than the crime.

I wouldn't have books because I wouldn't have a clue how to rank films and books in the same poll.

Not that either Puzo's writing or the Godfather films would make a list I put together.

I dunno. The two most recent ones (Thud! and Snuff) both seem to be the most pure "crime-based" of them all. Agreed about Night Watch and Jingo, though, which are both about wars.

Problem with Thud! is the focus on Vimes equivalent of the his dark traveller and the dwarf/troll politics and Vetinari's manipulation. Snuff is a bit of an odd one generally - I need to reread it. It felt a bit disjointed to me first time round.

This. Same reason I find it hard to vote for individual eps of TV shows.

Also is Drive eligible? (The film with OMG Ryan Gosling, not the TV show with OMG Emma Stone)

Reb, can we vote for radio plays and music?

I think it depends on the book, since as Elab says some of them are more focussed on politics/wars rather than policework. I think some of them are eligible from what I can remember, but I've not read Discworld in ages.

I've a couple of queries....

a) What's the policy on Westerns? Chiefly, the Proposition.

b) Can we have protest songs if they're about particular crimes?

c) Does Gimme Shelter (the documentary, not the song) count? It surrounds a crime, though it's also a music film.

Then again, Muppets Christmas Carol made it into the horror list, so what do I know?

During the opening song, the vegetables complain that they;re being stolen. That's a crime! I'll get The Muppets in this one too!

a) I hadn't thought about Westerns. I guess stuff like The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance with its emphasis on law and order versus criminality would be okay, but High Noon wouldn't be regardless of the incidental hero sheriff/evil lawbreakers plot. If The Proposition works when just viewed as a crime movie, then I'm happy to have it.

b) Sounds fine, though I can't think of any examples

c) The crime is incidental to the music, isn't it? It's a Rolling Stones film that happens to feature a murder. I don't really think it's eligible.

Just so this doesn't get forgotten about, I'm thinking of setting the deadline as the end of March. Does that sound reasonable for everyone?
