Hi all. As some of you may know, I hail from the Land Down Under/Great Southern Land/Sunburnt Country/Australia. To my extreme shame, I've frankly seen bugger all Australian films, or as least Australian films during the 70's/80's which is considered a Golden Age in our country's film history. The only really notable film I can think of that I've seen from that era is Mad Max, which I'm not the biggest fan of. After reading up a bit on the "Australian New Wave" and talking to several forumites recently, I came up with the idea I could create a thread where I could peruse through my countries films and review them (I believe there is an existing thread from a certain mod based on a similar premise, but hey we have Peter Weir and you have Peter Jackson so nyahh). I'm going to start off with 10 I've been meaning to see for ages and I might expand from there into Ozploitation films and modern films. Here's the first 10 I'm going to watch.

Wake In Fright (1971)
Walkabout (1971)
The Adventures of Barry Mckenzie (1972)
Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)
Sunday Too Far Away (1975)
The Last Wave (1977)
Patrick (1978)
My Brilliant Career (1979)
The Odd Angry Shot (1979)
Breaker Morant (1980)

 So if I convert a Gimli opinion to a normal opinion, Breaker Morant is either terrible or really good, and Walkabout and Picnic are terrific

And ta, but PA already kinda beat me to the idea awhile ago

If you ever come across a small film called Warming Up I'd love to know. It's one on a longish lists of films I saw on TV years ago that I'd like to see again.

You know how you hate to pre-judge films but sometimes a synopsis just leaps out at you as being a terrible idea?

 Not a bad choice there. Wake In Fright, The Last Wave and Breaker Morant particularly are, in my opinion, all masterpieces.

Whilst I can take or leave Patrick and The Odd Angry Shot is tonally confusing, the only one there I think is a turd is Barry Mckenzie. But then I don't think there is one decent example of an ocker film.

But I'll save more specific commentaries for your specific commentaries...

I think I'm the only Bazza fan on this forum, I feel so alone.

Good to see some more love for Wake in Fright though, one genuinely unsettling film.

I nearly bought The Proposition the other day but I instead bought a croissant and a beer. True story. At least you might get some reccs possibly


I'll watch Wake In Fright possibly tomorrow, due to the fact one of my friends wants to do a Ghibli double-bill of Laputa and Totoro tonight and I just can't pass that up.

I haven't seen any of those

Just found Ghosts... of the Civil Dead and Long Weekend on Youtube. Ghosts... in particular looks really really good.

I recall seeing Harvie Krumpet ages ago, needs a rewatch for sure.

The voice cast for Mary & Max has really peaked my interest. And seeing Eric Bana there reminded me I need to see Chopper again at some point.

Mary and Max is great. Just sweet, sad, funny, and more uplifting than some reviews might suggest. 2009 was a golden year for animation.

It's been bumped up to Film #12 on your recommendation. Ghosts.. is #11 because it looks superb.

The last five years or so have been really really good for animated films, even if it's been mainly Pixar and Ghibli bringing the majority of the goods.

 As much as I love both studios, there's been a lot of great stuff released over the last few years away from them, if you haven't seen them, try checking out stuff like the Aqua Teen film, My Dog Tulip, Don Hertzfeldt's Bill trilogy, Fantastic Mr. Fox, Fear (s) of the Dark got a mixed reception, but I absolutely loved it, Persepolis, La maison en petit cubes, The Illusionist, Waltz with Bashir, A Town Called Panic, The Cat Piano, Chico & Rita, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, The Secret of Kells, Summer Wars, Cat in Paris.

 I've only seen Persepolis and FMF out of that lot, I love them both quite a lot. I just found La Masion en Petits Cubes on teh Youtubes so I'll probably watch that right now I guess

I'm going to have to start a separate list to my to-watch list, entitled Films Rawl's has recommended

This. While I didn't think the quality was entirely consistent throughout (although still very good/excellent), the fantastically creepy animation kept me intrigued.

 La Maison en Petits Cubes - That was utterly sublime. I might be delving into hyperbole but that might be one of the greatest short films I've ever seen. Really really beautiful.

Cat Piano - That was also excellent. The animation style was really well done and Cave's narration is obviously awesome as well.

 A few suggestions/recommendations from me:

Malcolm (1986)
As Time Goes By (1988)
The Castle (1997)
Mad Dog Morgan (1976) Warning - decidedly patchy, but watchable
Newsfront (1978)
Heatwave (1982)

In fact, pretty much anything made by Peter Weir and Philip Noyce before they went to Hollywood is uniformally excellent.

Also, I think The Long Weekend is massively over rated. In fact, I don't think it's very good at all.
