I've never read the original diary but it's based in 1989, however I'm really pleased they moved the story forward to 1996 as I'm getting to relive my youth again through the fantastic soundtrack and hazy summer cinematography. Really loving this show! The initial advert did it a huge disservice as it suggested it was something more comedic, yet the show itself is actually drama with hints of youthful embarassment and quite serious moments showing someone with mental health issues. Highly recommended, although it's episode 4 next Monday so probably best to try and catch it on 4OD or wait for the DVD which is out in late Feb.
