10. A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens (1843) Novel

5. The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien (1937) Novel

Plot: Gandalf gets Bilbo to join a quest to take the treasure from the dragon Smaug

Adapted: The first of a trilogy hit cinemas late last year. Why the hell anyone in their right mind would think this book would need three films to do it justice is beyond unders... oh yeah, money. If Leonard Nimoy can tell the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins in just a few minutes with a catchy tune, Jackson has no excuse for needing nine hours.

From the Text: “In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit.”
