A film's soundtrack can make so much difference to one's appreciation of the film. It can create suspense, humour, it can bring you to tears, it can make you laugh, it can thrill you. Over the years many great composers have contributed immeasurably to making watching films one of my passions in life.
Here's my top 20:

20. All About Eve - Alfred Newman

19. The Omen - Jerry Goldsmith

18. A Streetcar Named Desire - Alex North

17. Hugo - Howard Shore

16. Don't Look Now - Pino Donaggio

15. 3:10 To Yuma - Marco Beltrami

14. The Leopard - Nino Rota

13. The Untouchables - Ennio Morricone

12. The Magnificent Seven - Elmer Bernstein

11. Spellbound - Miklos Rozsa

10. Dressed To Kill - Pino Donnagio

9. The Trouble With Harry - Bernard Herrmann

8. The Adventures Of Robin Hood - Erich Wolfgang Korngold

7. Murder On The Orient Express - Richard Rodney Bennett

6. The Boys From Brazil - Jerry Goldsmith

5. Lord Of The Rings - Howard Shore

4. The Cider House Rules - Rachel Portman

3. The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg - Michel Legrand

2. Lawrence Of Arabia - Maurice Jarre

1. Gone With The Wind - Max Steiner

Some superb ones in that list. It won't surprise anyone but LOTR is my favourite film score of all time.

Nice to see Macro Beltarmi and Rachel Portman appear, both underrated composers and two great scores listed. Korngold's music for Robin Hood is the best thing about the film. I love the music for The Leopard, one of the few scores I have for a film I've not seen.

I thought that would be pretty much a given when I included it in the list.
Glad to see someone else sharing my love for Rachel Portman's work. I hadn't realised until I looked her up on IMDB just how prolific she's been. In my opinion, she's one of the finest composers currently working in films, and let's not forget that she was the first woman composer to win an Oscar for Best Original Score for her beautiful score for Emma. Also love her scores for Chocolat and Nicholas Nickleby.
It would be interesting to see a few others posting their top 10 - 20 favourite scores.

Chocolat would probably be my favourite from Rachel Portman. It was certainly the first score by her that I bought, I used to listen to it constantly.

I used to have a fairly good idea of my top 20 soundtracks but it's changed a lot on recent years. If I can narrow it down I'll post a list.

North's music for Streetcar is gorgeous - it's so sleazy and alluring and cool.

I love the Gone with the Wind main theme too.

I think that Hans Zimmer's soundtrack for Nolan's Batman trilogy is "the state of art" within 2000s soundtracks

maybe off this topic but Game of Thrones opening theme contains perhaps the most thrilling music in fantasy genre,so brilliant
