I have to say i really dont think the PQ throughout the 2D version is that bad. yes there are some horrendous instances but overall it looks very good considering the visual style it has gone for. The worst and most unforgiveable moment is the mama in the hall scene around 24-25 mins in. That is absolutely woeful in terms of PQ but you know what, it's over in a matter of seconds!
