For those of us who will, inevitably, not manage to keep up the yearly tally of every film this year, here's a neat place to share any film that has caught us by surprise, that were unexpected. It might be a cinema release we didn't expect to have any great feeling for (last year's unexpectedly superb Silver Linings Playbook comes to mind) or more likely it's a DVD or film on TV that you've watched. You don't list every film here - just the ones that make you go, hey, that caught me unawares.

This is the place where the top films in the list are going to be as unexpected and unusual as those at the bottom, where the "Top 100..." thread tops with Jaws, Alien, etc.

This ties in with my attempt this year to watch more first time viewings, and cut back on rewatches. I hope to discover some great films this year.

Not sure whether to go for an amended list to update, a la the Top 100 thread, or just add as you go. I think if we go for a list at the head of the thread, we might build a record through the year for people to come to to find something a little different*.

I'm in. Hopefully it'll keep Deviation's screaming about the latest film he's fallen desperately in love with to one thread.

Ooh, my first discovery of the year (though as it was mentioned in the first post, perhaps not that exciting!)

Bradley Cooper's Performance in Silver Linings Playbook

A moving, funny and just wonderful performance from an actor who I didn't really rate before - but he really deserves the praise he's been recieving. Now, I'm looking forward to The Place Beyond the Pines even more.

Going to compile in my first post all my discoveries. My first one is Safety Not Guaranteed. I loved it. It's sitting at a high four but may move up to a five.

I'll write more later maybe, but it just completely surprised me: it's witty, it's touching, it's funny. I loved it.

My first discovery of 2013 is:

Wind Chill

I went into this not with high hopes but not with low hopes either.
The script isn't perfect but Emily Blunt gives an excellent performance and the tension and atmosphere is very good throughout. The changing relationship of the two leads also proves to be an interesting component.

All in all, a surprisingly above-average mystery/horror/thriller. Low 4 (out of 5).

Not quite following thread rules as it's a performance not a film but....

James Spader in Lincoln. The fact I'd like (love) the film was given, but Spader has never impressed me and I usually wish for any scenes involving him in a film to end very quickly. Not so here. In a slightly comic subplot in which he attemnpts to get democrats to change their vote, he's perfect as W.N. Bilbo

He also manages to get almost the best line of the film, but nothing can quite compete with "you fatuous nincompoop"

James Spader? I thought it was Rob Schneider.

He's basically playing Alan Shore. And Alan Shore is played very well - it's most of the rest of the show that's the problem.

1. Caesar Must Die

The Tavianis have been off the radar for a long long time so this was just a punt at GFF 13. But what a punt. Searing and vivid, an astonishing piece of film-making from the elderly brothers.
