 In the usual manner, list the top new releases seen this year.

I figure I might actually keep this up if I create the thread. Nothing personal elephant boy!

I may pop to the cinema when I get up, and do a triple bill of Pitch Perfect, The Impossible, and another I forget at the moment.

Oz: The Great and the Powerful: The ifrst two thirds are a lot more fun than I expected. The final third is a bit by-the-books.

Django Unchained: If it had ended much earlier it would be a lot higher. The problem isn't that it's too long - it didn't feel anywhere near as long as it is - but that there is a point where the film could have ended and very little after that point that justified not ending it that early.
Flight: Really good beginning.
Silver Linings Playbook
The Impossible: Great special effects, sets, and use of sound. The following day I went to see another film and the Impossible was just starting next door when I entered my screen. I could feel the room reverberating from next door's sound. The kid, Lucas, is very good.
Safety Not Guaranteed

Gangster Squad: Big fan of Zombieland. This was distinctly average.
Life of Pi

I'm just nabbing a spot - only been to the cinema once this year so far, which was to see Life of Pi, so nothing to put on a 2013 list yet. This is my favourite thread in the whole forum and I will try and be more involved this year!

The Impossible (Lo Imposible) (Juan Antonio Bayona,114 Mins) 8/10
Not only was this a very harrowing, and gripping white knunkle ride, but I was truly impressed by how it engaged me with the characters. The performances are very strong, Naomi Watts well worth her oscar nomination, Ewan Mcgregor does well to balance a performance which is more on the fringes of the story and Tom Holland was a really suprise. In the same mold as Untied 93 not just a human tredgy film, but a celebration of the human spirit.

American Mary (Jen Soska,Sylvia Soska,103 Mins) 6/10
Enjoyable enough trash horror from young directors who should go on to make better films. There are some nice ideas about body horror and the modern obsession with image, some good black comedy also, but the film never quite builds on it themes. Taken as a bit of exportation sleeze then its pretty effective. A added bonus for me was at the screening I was at there was a Q&A with the directors and lead actress who were great fun

A very engrossing production of this difficult text. The visuals got to grip with the dark and gothic elements of the world the story is set in, the sets, costumes, hair and make up well first class and direction engaging. For the most part the cast were very good, Hugh Jackman a fine lead, with Russell Crowe a ripe bit of gruff, also I enjoyed the comedy duo of Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen (this film showned that a little of SBC goes a long way), but the one performance that didn't work for me was Anne Hathaway's, it just felt like they were trying to hard to make her look unattractive, and at times her performance was a little too melodramatic. For the most part a epic ride which carried along.

Coming up I should be seeing What Richard Did, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty.

Les Miserables Though undeniably emotionally affective, in its reverence to the stage musical I felt this simultaneously exposed weaknesses within the work and undermined itself as a film. Frankly, the construction of the story does not work as it is in the film medium. What seems natural on the stage feels jarring when put on the wider canvas of film - I'm thinking particularly of the French Revolution scenes, in which the claustrophobia of the single barricade is understandable on a theatre set but feels ridiculously small scale on film.

I also found Hooper's decision to film much of the singing in extreme close up very distracting - it came across as a deliberate attempt to say 'this is what we can do that the stage can't,' a justification for the film's existence, since clearly no one was interested in revising the show to make it work in the medium. What it does is expose some very stagey performances - especially Hathaway, whose universal praise baffles me as I found her performance ridiculously melodramatic and over the top - when singing on your deathbed it's okay to croak one line, but doing an entire passage in it becomes tedious.

In its failure to adapt to the film medium I view this much as I view the (terrible) remake of The Producers, a souvenir of a theatre experience rather than a justifiable piece of art in its own right. Since the musical is an affective work, this has much to recommend it - it's just a shame that seemingly so many people think what an adaptation of Les Mis needs to be successful is total recreation of the stage experience. 6/10

Django Unchained - I loved this film, and if it doesn't reach the absolute heights of Inglorious Basterds, it comes close. I don't have a huge amount to add that hasn't already been said, except for the fact that I genuinely believe that what Tarantino has done here is use an exploitation genre to tell a tale with true (and most definetely not shallow) intellectual and moral weight. One could unpack the many messages of the film for hours, but one moment that stood out in particular to me was DiCaprio's discussion of why his father's servant didn't cut his throat whilst shaving him. To say that DiCaprio is a pantomime villain is not enough - he is a man born into a deplorable but also entirely ridiculous institution, where no one quite knows how or why the power lines have been drawn, who seemingly doesn't quite understand his position himself, even whilst he revels in it. In its subversion of power lines throughout the movie, Django is both uproariously entertaining and the kind of film which ought to provoke discussion.

My heart loved this film, my head has to deduct a point, as it can't deny the fact that it is too long. Frankly during the experience I didn't care, but much as I'd like to one can't ignore the fact that if the film has one flaw it is simply one of being 15 minutes too long. 9/10

The Sessions (Ben Lewin,95 Mins) 8/10
Finely judged black comedy, which ends up being very up lifting with a gentle and charming side. John Hawkes is very believeable, and Helen Hunt her raw, and sparky best, William H Macy almost stole the film as the deadpan priest.

Lincoln (Steven Spielberg,150 Mins) 7.5/10
A very well crafted and paced piece of cinema, visually one of Spielberg's best. The performances are also very good, with the exception of Sally Fields who at times seems to be in a different film from everyone else, other problems include the overly sentimental score during what should be powerful courtroom scenes and the lack of accessible to people with a lack of understanding of the subject. Good, but flawed.

Zero Dark Thirty (Kathryn Bigelow,158 Mins) 10/10
To get the touture debate out the way first, after the first forty minutes there is no more scenes of it, so really it cannot be discribed as a film about tourture, also to me the film makes it clear that tourture does not result in getting to the truth, as it shows the vagueness of the information revealed and the fact that someone will say anything just to stop it. After that what I was left with was a very well balanced, haunting film, with an effective visually style and chilling atmosphere throughout. It shows the lack of understanding from the American side of things, while truthfully showing many honest, hard working people who just become trapped as anothe cog in the system. Jessica Chaistain is wonderfully understated, but also firey as her CIA agent gets in over her head and swallowed up by a system she was once against. This complex character at the heart of such a story proves a great femnist moment for Bigelow. Jason Clarke and Jennifer Ehle provide great support.

Coming up for me, Antiverial, Bullhead and Hitchcock.

I know we're still decades away from Freudian theory but I hoped there was a psychological reason for her performance being hysterical at points.

Bullhead (Rundskop) (Michael R. Roskam,129 Mins) 9/10
What starts out as a gritty but basic looking thriller, ends up a very complex and surreal piece of cinema, with lovely touches of black comedy, and a very chilling atmosphere. The tension is carefully built, its a tough watch, but is oddly engrossing too.

No (I) (Pablo Larrain,118 Mins) 8/10
Amusing nostiga film, with an engaging visual style and intelligent look at themes of captialism and the poltics of the 80s. There is plenty of emotional depth also, and Benal once again gives a very effective, understated turn.

Mccullin (Jacqui Morris,95 Mins) 8.5/10
Fascinating portrait of both Mccullin, and the process of his work, and the just how personally it was to him. His deeply truthful and moving account of many tough experiences are carefully blended with his cutting edge skills, and some shocking stories. Made me place greater value in war photograhpy while also being very depressed about what I was seeing.

Coming up I will be seeing Terrance Malick's lastest To the Wonder, Django Unchained, Wrack It Ralph and I Wish.

What Richard Did (Lenny Abrahamson,88 Mins) 7/10
Another well crafted, and gritty tale of modern British culture from Abrahamson, it also features a very impressive turn from the lead. Unlike his pevious effort the world of this film and its characters were just too unlikeable and cold for me to fully engage with.

To the Wonder (Terrence Malick,112 Mins) 4/10
Seem to be on my own on this one but I found the lead character extremely annoying. The use of voice over did the film no favours, the scenes with her wondering around the field would have been best left up to our imagation. The lack of character devolpment was a huge problem and the ending just left me cold. Visually its glourious and the middle section with the McAdams character had more strange and unerving engry behind it, sadly the film didn't build on that.

Django Unchained (Quentin Tarantino, 165 Mins) 6/10
Good: Waltz and Fox, Bad:Leo and Sam Jackson's over hammy turns.
Good: The first hour and twenty minutes provide pretty solid entertainment with some good gags, Bad: It lasts for almost three hours and suffers from the normal QT over indelgence.
Good: Its not racist as it makes fun of racism, Bad: It gets caught in two minds whether to be an action comedy or a more profound statement on racism.
Overall by his recent standards its not bad, but its no more than solid.

Lore (Cate Shortland,109 Mins) 8/10
A visually encharting, and realistic view of the world through the eyes of a teenager living a very adult life in a tough period of German history. Saskia Rosendahl gives one of the most restraint and emotionally complex performances of the year to date, the atmposphere of the film with Lynchian industural moans make it simply haunting.

Arbitrage (Nicholas Jarecki,107 Mins) 8/10
Very assured debut from Jarecki, with Gere perfectly cast as a slipary, slimey, yet uncertain big business man with many complexities to his character, the world of the film is filled with cover ups and people making desprate acts. It is expertly paced, with a very shadowery visually style. Gere puts in a very psyhical performance, and there is impressive support from Tim Roth who is good fun as the cyincal, hard nosed cop. Susan Sarandon is also good, but I felt her character could have been delvoped better. overall a very edgy and intelligent debut feature.

Coming Up I will be seeing 2012 Berlin Prize winner Cesar Must Die, Robot and Frank, Stoker and Wreck it Ralph.

To the Wonder is a weak film.

Lore is the best film I’ve seen at the cinema (so far) this year and Saskia Rosendahl performance is exceptional.

Aren't Abramson and his films Irish? I thought Arbitrage was a bit woeful - they talk about women often enough but what has Gere done to his face? His attempts at emotion through most of the film comprised mainly of blinking a lot. It was the worst film we saw at Glasgow Film Festival.

Caesar Must Die, on the other hand, was in the top 3 new ones. I hope you enjoy it.

1. Oh dear am about to stir up an old chestnut there, you caught me on a technicality. Hello to our Irish friends!

2. We are going to have a big fight over Arbitrage, really don't know what film you were watching. The point of Gere's character is he is very restraint, and cold, but is able to turn on charm both at home and at work when needed. I felt he played that perfectly and was perfectly cast, also the scene with the car crush felt very realistic and he sold it really well.
