14 Tara Lynne Barr - Roxy - God Bless America
Is Ellen Page better in Super? I think almost certainly but that’s because her character is fantastically mental and she plays it extremely well. However as a similarly dissatisfied teen Barr run’s Page to a close finish and unlike the bond between the older male protagonist in Super I believe there’s a little more warmth and heart between Barr and Joel Murray’s nice guy Frank. The best moments of the film aren’t the rants against our dumb, cruel society or the bloody reckoning brought against those who perpetrate and feed it
(though they are gloriously entertaining in a messy sort of way) but the smaller interactions of these oddballs, they make what could be construed as an unhealthy
(snarff) relationship something rather sweet.
Jared Gilman - Sam - Moonrise Kingdom
I am a Wes Anderson fan, I have loved everything the man has produced and Moonrise Kingdom is no different. I thought to put that out there early because I’ve gotten the distinct impression over the last few years that being an Anderson enthusiast makes you superficial, all surface gloss and nothing more. I should probably tell the riveting story of how my brother bought me a copy of Tenenbaums in 2002 to make up for an argument we had and use it as some sort of justification…but I won’t.
As the very serious orphan and soon to be ex Khaki Scout Sam Shakusky
(a bespectacled Daniel Boone) Jared Gilman in his first professional role slips easily into Anderson’s world. He gives an excellent performance and holds his own against the likes of a long naturalised Bill Murray, Bruce Willis giving (in my view) his best performance in years and the much missed Edward Norton.
