How can it be a comeback if you're claiming he's always misfired?

You could argue the only two other decent films he appeared in during the last couple decades were Sin City and Unbreakable.

You could definitely argue that The Expendables 2 is not a decent film.
Plus if what you say is true then surely his 2012 movies would have been looked upon as "a comeback", they haven't.

2012: Moonrise Kingdom and Looper.
2000-2011: Unbreakable and Sin City.

MK and Looper are genuine 5* films. Is there something else worthy of mention from his CV during 2000-2011?

I enjoyed him in 16 Blocks. And Die Hard 4. So whether or not this constitutes a comeback now is simply a matter of opinion. I mean it's certainly not a comeback in the Travolta/Pulp Fiction sense.

I believe the correct answer is Tatum.

This next question may negate your suggestion, but...

Who's Tatum?

Sorry - Channing Tatum. 21 Jump Street and Magic Mike hit the big time and made a studio move a movie a year back so they could film extra scenes with him. Pretty good comeback all things considered.

It's got to be Bruce Willis for me - Moonrise Kingdom and Looper showed how great he can be when given engaging material.

Never thought I'd say this but I agree. I never really liked him much since he seemed to be lingering in Rom-Com hell (much like Matthew McConaughey, actually) but I've heard very good things about 21 Jump Street (haven't watched it yet). Magic Mike made me love him and it wasn't even because of the stripping (well, maybe a little...). It made me realise he can do serious, and he can do funny. Hell of a dancer, too.

Leaving aside my GI Joe quip, was he ever that big a star to begin with? I'd have thought that a comeback would entail being famous, disappearing for a while then coming back strong, like Downey Jr did a few years back.

Lets not get to technical here it's just a bit of fun.
However he did worked in both the comics and the animated tv and films so the character does work just untill now not on the big screen.

I think he was pretty big for a little while at least on the back of Step Up. But then he took a step sideways into soppy rom-coms and fell off the radar.

Thinking about it some more, I suppose the other big comeback is Joss Whedon - from being the also-ran who keeps having his TV shows cancelled on him to writing and directing the highest grossing film of the year.

The Hulk worked brilliantly in the 2008 film.In fact I much preferred the look of the creature in that movie and Norton was the best Banner.

Matthew MCconaughey - Killer Joe

This.

Willis has had a good year (despite the inclusion of the Cold Light of Day), whilst I'd argue Tatum's had his profile raised, rather than necessarily making a comeback.

Killer Joe is the first thing McConaughey has done in years that's properly eclipsed those romcom burdens (Magic Mike could be argued as well, but I haven't seen it) and it has reminded everyone who once saw him in Lone Star just how good he can be.

Not contest for me really (with the exception of the Muppets ).

I've seen it - it's brilliant - though it had a pretty low-profile release compared to Magic Mike and Killer Joe.

I have, hence my description "eclipsed."

It's a good performance, but it's nothing like what he delivered in Killer Joe.
