Having recently re-watched Ricky Gervais’ The Invention of Lying, it reminded me of a couple of things. Firstly, the film isn’t that bad. Sure, it’s not great but certainly not as pitiful as I first remember it being. I was also reminded however about how ridiculously good the cast is. Just off the back of my head, the cast includes:

Ricky Gervais, Louis CK, Edward Norton, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Jennifer Garner, Tina Fey, Rob Lowe, Jeffrey Tambor, Jonah Hill, Jason Bateman, Christopher Guest, Steve Merchant & Barry from Eastenders.

Not too shabby. Which got me thinking, which other films have you seen that were decidedly average but featured a far superior cast?

The Boat that Rocked, more the Boat that shipped water, another quinti British comedy that could have been shortened by 45 mins and still wouldn't have packed much of a punch.

I keep mentioning this and I will mention it again : Cosmopolis
Robert Pattinson,Paul Giamatti,Samantha Morton,Sarah Gadon.Great cast,by all accounts its also a very good book but what translates through one successful medium doesn't always translate to another.

Tropic Thunder

Very good comedic cast and some strong performances ie Robert Downey Jnr.But there was me hoping that this film was going to portray a more political edge and be generally more cutting the film unfortunately turned into nothing more than abit of a borefest.

Dark Shadows
Although Johnny Depp has taken a somewhat beating over some of his performances recently there is still no denying he is a good actor, and a top name. The cast, along with Depp,is also of great experience.Names such as Michelle Pfeiffer,Helena Bonham Carter,Bella Heathcote,Eva Green and Jackie Earle Haley should be enough to hold ones interest, unfortunately not.
As with most recent Burton films it gets lost in trying to be something and everything in equal measure, culminating in a very convoluted borefest of a movie.

The Other Guys: Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, The Rock, Sam L Jackson, Michael Keaton, Steve Coogan & Eva Mendes.

Great cast but detestably unfunny.

I really liked Tropic Thunder and The Other Guys. So there. Although TT was vastly overlong.

The Siege. Bruce Willis, Denzel Washington, Annette Bening, Tony Shalhoub etc.

And that's all I can remember about the film.

Robert Downey Jr. aside there's not much I like about Tropic Thunder (the Cruise cameo was horrific) but The Other Guys is one of the best comedies in recent years as far as I'm concerned.

Harry Potter and the Philosipher's stone.
I'm not a fan of any of the films to be honest but the first is the weakest and it's a hell of a cast.

Irwin Allen's disaster productions are top examples of these:

The Towering Inferno
The Poseidon Adventure
The Swarm
When Time Ran Out...

Also:

Towering Inferno and The Poseidon Adventure are terrific films and fantastic examples of their genre. To bunch them in with tripe like Swarm is unforgivable.

Moonrise Kingdom (2012). Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, etc. I know it's being nominated and everything, but I just seriously disliked this film.

Both Expendables movies. Great casts, mediocre films.
I did enjoy them both though

I don't think the Invention of Lying really counts, as most of the above are mere cameos. I mean, Phillip Seymour Hoffman has, what, two lines? And his screentime amounts to no more than a minute or two. Ditto most of the other stars in it. And, outside of Gervais fans, Louis CK is largely unknown in this country.

I think most (but not all) films with a largely talented and well known ensemble cast disappoint more often than not - for every (Soderbergh) Ocean's 11, there is an Ocean's 12 and 13...

As for The Other Guys, whilst I thought it was largely rubbish (and I have a MAJOR dislike for Will Ferrell - I don't find him in the least bit funny), I nevertheless thought Mark Wahlberg was great in it. In fact, he's fast becoming a "even if the film's shit, he's worth watching" actor. I heart Huckabees (heh - another ensemble flick) case in point - I absolutely loathe the film and it actually went as far as annoying me, which films rarely do, but I think Wahlberg is great in it and, for my money, the only thing worth watching it for.

An unmitigated steaming pile of shit. I like to like movies that most don't like - I figure most films have some redeeming qualities - but this one really didn't. I couldn't' believe how poor the actors seemed. We know that Angie, Johnny et al are proper craftspeople, yet this came across like awkward Sixth Form acting or something. Direction was bad, script was bad, everything was... bad.

What I can' t work out is how the actors and team got involved with the piece - it was just so awful.

Completely agree. In all my years of going to the cinema I don't think I've ever experienced as high a volume of walk-outs as this film did - and for a change, I couldn't blame them. The two folk I saw it with utterly detested it as well, and usually they're quite calm in articulating their feelings about a film they've seen.

Still, it made the top ten Sight & Sound poll of 2012, so what do we know?

Yeah that was a painful watch for me as a long time Cronenberg fan, couldn't believe it was so dull, easier his worse film to date. The cast bar Pattison (whose casting I understand the reasons for, but it fell flat) were very good.

As a Wes Anderson fan I would say Moonrise was his best film in awhile, which brings me to The LAWSS which given the likes of Murray, Houston and Owen Wilson involved was very forgettable.

Oceans 12 and 13.

The first one was a great ensemble cast/heist flick. The two sequels were just overindulgent rubbish.
