ORIGINAL: elab49 I didn't like it that much, particularly Wilson whose sole joke was I'm FAT!!!!!! and then some kind of singing that was more a shouty thing and very unimpressive. But then, fat is the go-to joke nowadays I suppose. It's what it felt like. Look - fat girl in pool with blokes. Look - fat girl throws herself about to look ridiculous BUT it's cool because she's the one doing it. Look - fat girls calls herself names and references others wrt to that. She kind of made me cringe - one of those fat kids at school that gets desperately funny because they feel it's how to join in. Very sad. 'course if that had been part of the narrative it might have been interesting. I finally watched the film, and I'd have to disagree completely with that. The defining character trait isn't that she's fat, it's that she's completely unrestrained, the character who says what she thinks others will be thinking. I didn't see many jokes at all based about her weight, just her willingness to be outspoken. Even calling herself Fat Amy isn't making a joke based on her weight, it's based on her acknowledgement that there will be people (Especially in that environment) who will think of her only in that sense. I mean the fat girl in pool thing, that's not even a joke in the film. It's a quick shot of what she's doing when the band is put back together. You're not meant to laugh at her then, it's just her being comfortable with herself, there's not even an attempt at a joke in that scene. If she had been turned into a crying on the inside character I think it would have been awful, a complete betrayal of the character. The most objectionable part of Pitch Perfect was the high regard it held for the fucking Breakfast Club.
