Title alone, because it sounds like a rom-com about a ditzy girl who can't spell Ella and something about it reminds of me Along Came Polly.

As for meltdown, check the resolutions thread.

I thought About Elly sounded like a Jennifer Aniston rom-com. Then I found out it was by the director of A Separation and just wished it was a Jennifer Aniston rom-com.

Expand?

The meltdown may yet be forthcoming, but the peculiar comparison with Jennifer needs to be clarified.

I assume he's talking about the film's actual title, rather than the synopsis.

Yep. Although I still don't get the fuss about A Separation. A decent film, but not one that inspires me to check out the director's other work.

Curiously, I could have sworn it was high on your 2012 list before everything went to pot.

Or is it just because you don't like anything?

Top 20 or so in last year's poll based on UK first viewings, slipped a lot on second viewing last year, while others went higher on second viewing. It happens. I don't deny it's a decent film, never have. It's the attitude of absolute shock when someone doesn't love it unconditionally that bothers me. But if that's the pinnacle of the director's career, I'm not sure it's worth taking the time to watch earlier film.

Does that mean Pitch Perfect is good or just that you think it's better than the others? Normally I wouldn't ask, but you have Dark Shadows on that list.

That's just a list of all the 2012 films I've seen. Dark Shadows was definitely one of the worst.

Pitch Perfect is good yeah. It has problematic Asian stereotypes, but they don't sink the film. And I was surprised how much I liked Rebel Wilson considering how much she annoyed me in Bridesmaids. It's about on a par with Goon for me.

I didn't like it that much, particularly Wilson whose sole joke was I'm FAT!!!!!! and then some kind of singing that was more a shouty thing and very unimpressive. But then, fat is the go-to joke nowadays I suppose.

Sure there was a vein of those jokes but I didn't think that was her only joke.

It's what it felt like. Look - fat girl in pool with blokes. Look - fat girl throws herself about to look ridiculous BUT it's cool because she's the one doing it. Look - fat girls calls herself names and references others wrt to that. She kind of made me cringe - one of those fat kids at school that gets desperately funny because they feel it's how to join in. Very sad.

'course if that had been part of the narrative it might have been interesting.

I quite like Kendrick but never believed her music skills - esp after the opening to her genius was a bloody awful mix of The Proclaimers.

I'm guessing it's gone in lower than you'd hoped it would.

Nah, that's a really good placing considering how strong the films above it are. MMMM was my number 100 when I did the 2000 - 2012 list, and that's only number 13. I am going to review it for the other thread, but prob not tonight.

Pretty great, and completely unlike anything else I've seen him do before. It would have been higher if the other guy hadn't been so annoying.
