I'll add a pinky swear for this. Life got in the way, hospitals were visited and I screwed up timewise. Promise it won't happen this time.

The rules

1) releases by UK dates - if only for consistency, otherwise we'd have a gap year to year
2) some leeway with foreign language films, particularly if they've not been released over here - a reasonable and accessible DVD release is sufficient for most foreign language movies, and most will have a festival showing over here.
3) New releases only - with so many film resurrections, new prints etc it'd be too easy to fill the list with non-new films otherwise.

Choose your top 10 films  for 2012 on this basis and post or PM. If you want to double-check a foreign release we can try and get some kind of consensus, too.

Feel free to change your choices up to the mid of January (it would really help if you quoted the post you were changing!).As usual the chaps in the Films of 2012 list thread might give you some ideas.

To see if it increases the range of films we get, if you'd like to post a top 20 rather than a top 10, do feel free to do so. I'll count lists of 10, 15 or 20 in the final count.

Also, if people have seen reissues through the year and feel like posting a top 3 or 5 of those? If there are enough I'll count those as a separate list

Currently my list of films from 2012 looks like this :-

01. Moonrise Kingdom
02. Safety Not Guaranteed
03. The Muppets
04. Take This Waltz
05. Avengers Assemble
06. The Cabin in the Woods
07. Brave
08. The Raid: Redemption
09. The Dark Knight Rises
10. Skyfall
11. Hunger Games
12. The Pirates! In an Adventure With Scientists
13. Lawless
14. 21 Jump Street
15. The Amazing Spider-Man
16. Madagascar 3
17. Lockout
18. Dragon Eyes
19. American Reunion
20. Ice Age 4: Continental Shift

That's from my list of films watched this year. Apart from the top 4 I don't particularly agree with the placings at all but I'll keep them as they are for the sake of consistency. I imagine a number of those towards the bottom will disappear as I catch up with this year's films over Xmas.

07. The Cabin in the Woods (Drew Goddard)

I know it featured in the poll last year, but is The Artist eligible going by UK release date?

My 10:
1-The Cabin in the Woods
2-The Artist
3-Skyfall
4-The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
5-Looper
6-The Muppets
7-The Avengers
8-The Grey
9-ParaNorman
10-Sinister
11 (If I can't have #2)-Shame

The official release date for The Artist was the 30th December for the UK so it was eligible last year not this I'm afraid.

I look forward to the results appearing this time next year! (only joking elab, you're efforts are much appreciated)

Too wrapped up in uni malarkey at the moment to determine a precise top 20 in terms of order but I'll start thinking about it after the 21st.

Also keen to see Life Of Pi, You've Been Trumped, Even The Rain & Grabbers before I thrash out a list.

Also, I completely recommend people watch Grabbers before they vote

I've got a couple of festival ones that aren't being released over here or don't have dates for release to ponder, especially when I've seen Ernest and Celestine twice now.

I'll have a top 10 (possibly 15) in soon, there's a few films I need to see first that I have handy.

I'd love to see a separate list of our least favourite films of the year Mainly just so I could spread my utter hatred for Paranormal Activity 4 and Lovely Molly/The Possession.

I didn't realise you'd caught this - good to see it in your list (we rewatched it today - no idea if the cinema release will open near us).

I'd forgotten about Blackthorn - I must have skipped past it on that link above.

There's a lot of oddness about Margaret in terms of release and I'm not sure it ever got more than a limited showing beyond London, no more than a festival equivalent. IMDB seems to back that up and I can't find anything that suggests anything else.

I don't think it was generally available in the UK until 2012, and that was a DVD release rather than theatrical? In that case I'm happy that this was really only able to be added to anyone's list this year under the festival rule (which effectively takes in London only releases so I think that's fair).

This is why you need to review more. For someone previously lukewarm on Anderson, rating his new one highly is important. VERY IMPORTANT.

My opinion on There Will Be Blood has improved over the years as well. I don't review that much any more because my reviews of the films I was most interested in were overlooked and I couldn't really be arsed to have pages of debate about a film I thought was fairly shit.

Elab, only caught Grabbers a few days ago but loved it.

I distinctly remember it being released in an Edinburgh cinema this time last year. I would remember as I wanted to see it, but couldn't due to my horrible financial situation at the time.

Furthermore, it was out up here a good three to four weeks before the Artist was on general release - which as we know - only really appeared in a cinema outside London until the first week of 2012.

So if Rawls is allowed to have Margaret, Rebel Scum should be allowed to have the Artist.

Or they can have neither?

Individual cinemas can have odd showings and if festivals had shown Margaret last year it would have been perfectly fine for someone to choose it (although the normal codicil to that is to point out it might get more marks when it's more widely released). eg This Must be the Place took ages to come out over here, I saw it in Glasgow at the festival but the official release was April. But if someone had wanted to include it after seeing it at the LFF the year before, that would have been OK.

Not seeing a film that's on general release just because your particular cinema took a while to show it shouldn't change the date here - the eligibility date is the UK release date. Also, previously, we've not counted a London only release as a wide theatrical release to fix a date and Margaret's was, The Artist wasn't. Or was if? If I've that wrong the answer changes but I did think The Artist was a full release for that date.

Both now have official UK release dates though and that's what we're going by. Artist out, Margaret in. Unless the official UK date was a limited London run. If that makes sense

As Qwerty says, A Separation was last years list.

This Must be the Place is very definitely eligible!
